THEOUQH THE DEPTHS.
BY HANNAH MORE KOHAUS.
4,0h, lam sick of grief!" she moaneJ;
"A fever burns my heart, -That
tears, though rivers, fail to quench,
Or to relief impart.
' "My soul with agony is tossed,
That sobs will not allay,
Nor sighs subdue, though full and pressed
The measure every day.
So welcome, kindly death'" she cried;
"Thrice welcome, quiet grave;
Thy waters cold and dark and deep,
Alone such wounds can lave.
"How say you? Death is not relief?
Oh mind of love bereft!
. Would'st rob me of the one sweet drop
Of comfort there is left?
"The grave's no refuge place for me,
- Death is no friend to me?
That what I am this side the tomb,
The same I still shall be?
"Ah, what then shall I do," she wept,
" With all this load of grief?
Say, is there naught will give mankind
A measure of relief?"
"Arise and overcome,'! said I;
"Subdue! thou ruler art;
The springs are in thyself alone
, To cool thy fevered heart.
"The grave holds not forgetfullness,
Nor rest, nor comfort brings; '
'Death is an enemy,' said One
Who understood all things.
. 'Tis soul that suffers, and thy soul
Lives on without its clay;
If here, or there, to-morrow's but
The shadow of to-day.
"Then rouse thee, suffering heart; be strong;
This is what thou must do;
The billows breast and bravely wade
The surging waters through."

An Editor Loose.
This is the way an editor feels -when be
doc3 tip bis sentiments in blank verse: .
'I would flee from the city's rule and
law from its fashions and forms cat
loose and go where the strawberry grows
on its straw, and tbe gooseberry grows on
its goose; where the catnip tree is climbed
by tbe cat as she clutches for ber pre;
the guileless and unsuspecting rat on the
rattan bush at play; I will catch with
ease the saffron cow and the cowlet in
their glee, as they leap in joy from bougb
to buugb on' the top of a cowslip tree:
and list while the partridge drums his
drum and the woodchuck chucks liis
' wood and tbe. dog devours tbe dogwood
plum in the primitive solitude. '
'Ob, let me drink lrom the moss-grown

tbe whitewashed dairy I'll turn, where the
dairymaid hastening hies, ber ruddy and
gold butter to churn from tbe milk of ber
butterflies; and I'll rue at morn with tbe
earliest bird, the fragrant barnyard pase,
and watch while tbe farmer turns bis
herds of grasshoppers out to grass."
