D H AJJACOBTES.
Down tbe street of a western town,
'Neath the babbling brow of a mountain
brook,
: Elbowing bis way 'mong the bustling throng
Toat surged ani swayed and jostled along
Came miner, old and bronzed and gray.
He noticed none aa be passed on bis way,
But beneath his breath God could bear him
say,
"Dn Anacortes!"
The "con" man grasped his horny ha-d
And prated of friends in a far-off land.
He told him of Swigging, bis brother-in-law,
And every friend that he ever saw; .
But the miner looked in the distance drear,
As if he were drawing a spectre near,
And only these words -could the listener
-. hear,
"D n Anacortes!"
The real estate man, hearty and gruff, -Extended
bis band and unloaded old guff;
He told of the country that made people
rich
On a gopher hole or a swampy ditch.
But the miner was versed in Los Angeles
lore
And San Diego, he'd been there before.
Down at Walla Walla he'd sold a farm.
And at Puyallup a house and barn.
He'd sold a mine in tbe Coeur d'Alene,
And a herd of cattle from off the plain;
All that be had, eyery inch of ground.
And he'd joined" the stampede down
to
Puget Sound;
He'd dumped it all in, made a "sucker's"
play.
They told him the railroad would come that
way;
He'd lived on bologna, his hair turned gray.
And now he's a tramp and does nothing but
say,
: "D n Anacortes!"
Equal to the Occasion.

with an experience tbe other evening
which completely nonplussed him. One
evening quite recently be dined with Mrs
J. W. Board man, proprietress of tbe Hotel
Woodruff. Visiting Mrs. Boardmau is a
cote little niece about five years' old. She
is a regular chatterbox and makes many
bright remarks during the day. Fearing
lest the child would astonish tbe preacher
by some outlandish saying, bet aunt
-warned her to keep mum during the din
ner, me aumomuun was iiBieneu in
with awe. and at tbe table tbe little one
scarcely dared look at Mr. ' Stowe, ut
wishing to commit a supposed sin. ' While
tbe servant was absent from the room the
little girl noticed there was no butter on
her small pink dish. She didn't mind
holding her tongue, but to eat bread
without butter that wonld never do.
She took a survey of the table, and lo and
behold, the butter disb was directly in
' front of the preacher. Wistfully she
gazed at both for a few seconds. Never
in her brief existence did she appear so
pensive. Then, gathering all her courage
and clearinir her throat, ane said :

moment have arranged a window curtain,
and other guests were suddenly touched
with a friendly cough.
Little Mabel, self satisfied that she bad
done the proper caper, was the only one
at tbe table who could positively prove
thai she was alive.
