. The tu ana the Sew Jvarnajist.
The managing editor of a large daily
newspaper, a fe n days ago,gave a would
be contributor permission to prepare a
two-column paper on a given topic for his
journal. The editor's estimate was that
the article could be prepared in one, or at
most two days. But the writer declined
the task, saying that it would require fix
weeks' labor.
The difference between the two es
timates was the difference between tho old
and new journalism. The contributor be
longed to the old time when literary com
position was thought to be some mighty
and mysterious toil, usiDg up the pbos
- phorus of i he upper regious of the soul.
Iu that ponderous old school of thought
it wa3 reckoned that a man's brain would
blow up if be applied any sort of high
pressure to it, and if a writer spent two
hours in steady composition the proper
thing was to go to bed and send for a
. dector.
Fine times the newspapers would have
in getting nit if the old notions prevailed
to-day I
Lighting speed is the "word alike for
wiilera, compoBiters and pressman. The
. tpecd at which editors and reporters pre
pare their matter for the modern news
paper would indeed blow na the brain
of the old fashioned literary and encyclo
pedic person. Mr. Murat Halstead has
been writing a column an hour of Dews
paper mutter for nearly forty years: and
1 is powers have not failed in the slightest.
His .former editorial assistant, the late
" F. B. Plimpton, wrote at the same rate.
. This is the regular standard speed which
all newspaper writers aspire to reach.
Some nther American editors have reached
it.
The local reporter whose work is in fine
print can generally prepare a column in
an hour and a half to two hours, Re
porters are frequently paid by the column
in the large cities. The one cent papers
often pay no more than $3 a column. At
that rate the reporter earns $30 to $25 a
week and finds his own material. lie
must or he could not get his living.
It is not apparent that either the quality
.." of newspaper work or the health of the
writers goners from this electric speed
Many newspaper editors live to be old
men, and they are the voungest old boys
of their generation. Modern newspaper
work is not so encyclopedic as that of the
past was, but it is far more readable and
contains far more of the lite of the time.
Story of a Diamond.
''There's the most beautiful diamond I
have ever seen duriog an experience of
- thirty years with sparkling gems," said a
veteran diamond merchant to a Pbiladel-
phia Inquirer man, as be held up-a stone
that seemed to live in fire. From every
facet radiated brilliant colors, and the hue
' of the stone was that steely blue whicii de-
. lights every connoisseur of the precious
gems. The diamond did not weigh over
six karats, but it was eaiily worth $5000.
"That stone has a tragic history," con
tinued the man of jewels, as he laid the
- diamond to rest amid a nest of snowy cot
ton. "It comes from the De Beers mines
in south Africa, and was discovered by a
coolie employed by the company. His
practiced eye saw that the gem was a mar
velous one for beauty and color, and a de
sire to steal it overcame him. Well, lie
did steal it, and to conceal the diamond
about his person for the coolies work al
most naked in the diamond mines cut
a hole in his fl&b under the arm. Bnt
the wound did not beal, and the observant
eye of the form an saw what was the matter.
A few davs after he charged the cooly with
having stolen a diamond, but the negro
denied it. .
' "When Jack, the foreman, reached lor
his sore arm the thief made a dash and
ran toward the outskirts of the camp
like a deer. The foreman followed Dim,
but the fleet-footed negro outstripped him.
lie knew that a severe punishment await
ed him if captured, and centered all bis
efforts on getting away with the stone,
whose value would make him rich for life.
But Jack was equal to the emergency, and
drawing his pistol shot the. cooly though
the back just as be was taxing to the bills.
His dead body was dragged back into
camp, bis arm cut open, aud this beautiful
gem in the rongb was taken out Iron the
insertion. It's a tragic story, but true as
gospel, and only a sample of what bas
happened more than a hundred times in
the diamond mines of south Africa."
A Hbn's Wabjuho. Tlie Dakota City
Eagle exhorts the unprepared to . get
ready, with the following ttorr : "One
day last week the wife of John Proyancha
found a soft-shelled egg on which was an
illegible inscription, as though stamped
from the inside of the shell. The egg by
some mishap was broken. A day or two
later an egg with a bard shell was ionnd
in the same nest. The egg bore the
following inscuption in raised letters:
"Prepare to die. God will take you. Jesus
win come soon." it is no boax and no
trick. The letters are perfect, and appear
ai though, they bad been at am ted from
the inside of the shell.
