Fwist! here Rover; we must be going: Sundown, and nothing to eat alLday; Ten mile; back to ibe camp, ai d bio .vug, But what's the odds when we've "struck the pay?" Glory! Old boy, it's hard to quit it, Even to leave it for over night. . Clinch it, porphry, where we bit it, . With hard, black fingers, stingy and tight. That little seam that means salvation Hope for me and a home for Sue Four lonely years of half starvation But their heads into that streak of blue. Ugh! how the cold snow-flour is sifting! Curse on the wind, that it comes just now! Only my tracks ijr trail, and drifting; And fourteen inches is tough to plow. Hard work! That's what it is, old Rover, That mile was swelled to four limes its size, Trail plum gone, ani the daylight over, And wind that cuts like steel in the eyes. - Whinning, Rover? But that won't mend it, Come, we must take it like men, you know, One stop here in the cold would end it; Our only safety is on the go. Think who's praying in old Pequawket, To-morrow the wires will tell her "Come! Struck it rich in the Empty Pocket!" See her laughing and crying? Well, some! What? You won't move? Then on my shoulder I'll have to pack you, you rascal you! Kn-h! you're a load! I'm getting colder; There's a ton of lead in either shoe. Down! O, God! But we've got to make it! Ah-h! Ean Francisco Chronicle. One of the queer things in the study of crime is that wueu an apparently new kind of offense against law and morals ii discovered, almost all at once the enm makes its appearance all around us, as if it were a new form of epidemic disease There has been a good deal of speculation about tins unquestioata luct, some uu dents of social problem claiming that imitation accounts for it, others tbat the discovery leads to moreextendeu a search and thus discloses what has existed but has been kept bidden. Whichever theory may be correct, the fact is certainly as . stated, and will .probably contmue to be . so as long as law breaking exists. Within the past few years there have at least a dozen cases been brought to light of men leading daal lives -tbat is, men who had actuully two hemes, two wives, two sets of children, two classes of acquaint ances, and some times two distant occu pations, it being understood, of course, that each establishment was in periect and complete ignorance of the other. Usually death bas been the key wiiich : has reyealcd the rrystery, and bas brought forward two sets of weeping relatives marriage to lay the last memento on the bier of the dual husband, and then fight . over the disposition ot the piopery; but a - recent celebrated case in New York is an exception, for the man's vilhany bas been exposed while he was aiive. The reference is to Sheriff Flack, the man who obtained the fraudulent divorce from bis wife and who bas been indicted by the grand jcry for bis cotduct in the affair. It turns out tbat be has been leading a dual life for seventeen years, and tbat without any oue's knowledge, At bis homo in East Fifty-seventh street be was James A. Flack, while only twen ty blocks away be was Mr. Raymond. In each borne, if such be the proper word to use, be bad a wife and sou, they hav ing been called Flack at one place and Raymond at the other. Perhaps the most singular part of tbi double existenbe is the fact that Flack, as Flack, ran for office in 1885 and again in 18SS, being elected couuty clerk the first time and (sheriff the second, and no one found bim out. It bas been said very often that the "fierce light which beats upon a throne ' is but a tallow dip to a calcium light when compared with the searching rays of in -estigation which are cist upon and around a candidate for of fice, and yet no one of Flack's political opponents ever got bold of the story, and it probably would never have been known had it not been for his attempt to obtain a divorce fiom his lawful wife, to which he was urged by "Mrs. Raymond." who knew ber position and repented of the sin which she was committing; but in order to clear .her own skirts and to se cure the position of the son of the unlaw ful union, she induced Flack to commit another crime and to attempt to get rid of his lawful wife by a fiaud. No romance writer with any regard for the probabilities would have ventured to devise such a siluatioi. The unlawful wite, desiring to make her illrgitimate bod a religious teacher, induces ber para incur to attempt a fraud upon bis legiti mate wife in order that the child of the unhallowed union may be legitimized be fore bis tntry into Ibe ministry. Some of the modern French novelists or dra matists might venture to create such a complication, but there are no English or American writers of fiction, with perhaps one or two exceptions, who would ven ture to do it. Such things throw strange side light. upon human nature. Tbey show that reputation and character are two verv different things, and that a mai who is to all appearances a reputable member of tociety may be only a gross hypocrite. and tbat those who are seeming v bis most intimate friends, may only know one side of the man's life and character, GUARANTEED. Did jpu ever see a wealthy, rich man tbat is, a man full of weal and, at the same time, possessed of much money ? JNot many, X am sure, bat some. I con fess it is an old story, but tbere are some new ligLts on it; and what I dtsire 16 do is to show you how the poveny of rich people is growing more and more griev ous, and the wealth of poor people is growing greater and more nutritious, Indeed, I am willing to exactly contro vert Mr. George and assert, the rich are growing poorer and the poor are growing richer, tbat tnere are no millionaires ex cept day laborers and hard-up artisians. People can not use money or property now-a-days, except undtr very rigid restraints. Suppose Mr. Vander bllt gave an order to have his proportion ate bi are of the New York Central des troyer", or, suppose be should buy up the whole stock of the Hudson River track from New York to Albany and set on garigs of men to obliterate it, would he be obeyed? To be sure he might own, and may control the road, but he can not close it. So long as tlie New York Cen tral is specially valuable to the people of the Lnited btatcs they will not allow it to be broken up. I should like to see " tho attempt made in order to see it dem onstrated tbat the popular will and needs of the public are above all technical pn vale rights. The mob-outbreaks of rather frequent occurrence go to show that, after all, law and custom reside in the living crowd rather than in preced ents and courts. A mob of the nine teenth century in our centers of civilization is a wide way from the tumults ot the coarser and barbarous ages. But this does not state the question at all in its fullness.
