of this state and tinred our senators

work already under way, and to secure
j water for vessels of deep draft. The
president invited Mr. Nash of the U.

j make such remarks as he wished. He
j responded happily and said that if the
i press and people had for ten years
j past been so energetically in support

now, the work would have been long
ago completed. Ho hoped that the re
lations of the company he represented
with the press of the stile would al
ways be as pleasant as they are now.
The resolutions were enthusiastically
unanimously passed.

"TJ1E IMPORT i:d TEACHER.'
; Heme tencliors we learn took excep-1
tion to the remark made bv us at the '
jlate institute concerning "iinporietl ,
teachers. Aow as a matter ot fact
rejioe t,,at n w" . qualified i
teachers liove corae to Orej'on - from :
btate. and they have dona much ;
, towards the higii posiiiDii that Oregon ;
holds to-day on tlie education-u lin'.
That particular teacher that says 'Ore-
gon teachers" do not take kindly to ,
any Fiig-restions made by t-heni, or
"that they sneer at their ideas of meth-;
od-i in the school room," is very much
mistaken.
The matter which calleil tortlt our '
remark was tint made by a te, !. i !
lately to t Iih stHte, who said ;.t the:
Baudon institute ''that he wis pleased :
and surptis-d at the intelligence of the j
members of that institute," and he ac
counted for it on the theory that "they, j
like himself, had all drifted from other
states hither," or words to that f flect. ;
Now the fact was that a large percent ;
of that institute was Oregon " teachers. ;
Another thing was, that when the lat-'
est designs for constructing school j
bouses had been adopted by Oregon s
directors, and those designs were even j
"imported," and the architect an east, i
ern man with fifteen years experience !
in the school room, then these designs j
were severely criticised by some teach- !
ers, which if they had investigated '
they would have found the work e.t j
actly right. One teacher said to us, j
"tho stairway is hard to climb," eer
tainly, but did he not know that the i
stairVay was built for chiMien audi
not for adults? A child s school de.k j .
is uncomfortable for a grown person to !
sit in, so a child's stairway is iincom-
fortable for older jieople. The critics'
mistake lies in the fact th it thev do
not make the distinction between the '
step of a child and an adult. The fact j
is, the Roseburg public school house j
has the most scientifically constructed i
stairway for children in the state, and j '
perhaps this being the first one some j
folks had ever seen they therefore sup-. ;
posed it to We all w rong. The Oregon
teachers, we are glad to say, are abreast ;
of the best, and the mistake should i.
never lie made, as soma preachers do i
as well as teacliei s, that the Oregon!
people are all heathen. Come and lead j
us, but dont make fun of us, r.or drive j
us. 1
