Continued from lit Pnge
tinuously obstructed. We must take
the rough and rocky way as well as the
smooth and pleasant As a rule, the
men who stand boldly ior the defence
of truth, are not the gentlemen who
have been rocked in the cradle of in
dulgence or caressed in the lap of lux
ury; but they are men whom necessity
has called from the shade of retirement
to contend with the stern realities of
life under the scorching rays of the sun.
Life is earnest it is aggressive! with
just enough trouble to enable us to ap
preciate it "Gems cannot be polished
without, friction, nor man perfected
without adversity."
I1LIGXCE;
jr
By Ida, Benedick.
Diligence is steady application to
any kind of business. We may enter
into any kind of work; yet without dil
igence we will never succeed. All
great men- were not born in palaces,
Some of the greatest men the world
haa ever known were too poor, when
boys, to obtain even a conVmon school
education, yet by constant effort they
have attained the highest positions in
. life and their names will be honored
through the coming ages.
; The success of this world depends on
diligence. Were we to neglect the lit
tle things of this life, what would be
come of the great things?
"Take care of the pennies and the
dollars will take care of themselves" is
a sentence we often hear. If we neg
lect bur school work we cannot expect
to succeed in after life. We should
therefore be faithful in school, doing
well the duties assigned us, so that
when our school days shall have ended
ws may recall, with pleasure, the many
happy days spent in the school room.
The poet said, "great oaks from lit
tle acorns grow." We may have little
or i.othing with which to enter busi
ness, yet if we are faithful in onr
work we are sure to succeed. Many
who are so fortunate as to have parents
to start them in life, are yet unfortu
nate, for they do not feel the responsi
bilities and do not care so much about
their business. They who by hard
work and diligence earn a fortune
take best care of it .
It has leen well said that "diligence
js the philosopher's stone that turns
every thing to gold." Many young
men just from the school room, with
the future bright before them, little
think of the hardships they will haveJ
to endure through life, yet with dili
gence they may reach the top round
of the ladder of well-merited honor and
prosperity.
WAXT1XG.
By Ella W'unberly.
One of the most difficult lessons hu
manity learns is the art of patiently
waiting. Thactivity which works
for a certain encTwill prove the indus
try and skill of the worker; but the
strain upon his power of endurance
will not be felt then as painfully as
when his labor is over and he awaits
the result.
The sluggard who with folded hands
waits for the favorable turning of For
tune's wheel is but a drone in the hu
man hive, but the patient man is he
who during his toils -and struggles en
dures alike the balmy air of spring,
snmmer'a-heat, or winter's chill.
Skilledffort is required to enable
one to pakiently await the results of
lifetime efforts to know whether we
are to be crowned with success or to
linger amid disappointment.
He is a hero who during such a
crisis can stand firm and erect, pre
serving that even mental balance, that
unshaken fortitude, that " courage and
endurance that have sustained our
greatest heroes or martyrs through the
ours of trial.
It requires culture to bear unmoved
the suspense that precedes great events
in life when one is redely for well
earned rest if successful or for renewed
effort if failure is the result of years
of weary labor. Life's journey is
marked by periods of waiting in pros
perity or pain. Waiting is the guar
dian, of faith, the preserver of peacp,
and the teacher of humility. We
must be satisfied to work energetic
ally with a purjKjse and wait the re
Rult. AH progress of the best kind is sl-jw,
but you can accomplish anything if
you only have patience. Water may
b carried in a sieve if you can only
wait till it freezes. Those who at the
commencement of their career nuet
less applause than they, deserve, not
unfrequeitly gain more than tliey
merit t the end. -'
Tlieaitive have duties to perform;
but tliPie nre those to whom is given
tio pail in life's work but to await
God's will patiently. Some are de
niiid physical power, some to whom is
sjiven no mental force, some are strick-
n down helpless midway in life's jour
ney and must be a burden upon loving
or careless hands until kindly released
by Death. To these in' their weary
hour of inactivity and suspense, when
physical powers lie prostrate'and men
tal force is Enfeebled, there , is a com
fort in the (thought that, "They also
serve who only stand and wait.":
Wait cheerfully then at life's station
where Patience is called upon for her
work folding the hands perhaps prayer
fully, but fretting not that they must
for the, time lie idle. Wait as God's
humble servant till he opens the way
for renewed usefulness or gives the
gentle spirit rest in what we hope to
be life everlasting.
