Would we have our names enrolled
with the great we must have characters
of our own. In some instances men
may irrespective of their own merits
receive tokens of honor. It is much
easier to acquire money than charac
ter. : Wealth may 'to a certain degree
command respect", but in an intelligent
community nothing i3 so valued as
character.
It is but a poor pass:poi t here to
say that you had ancestors vlJ3were
distinguished. In some rc s- ec's it is a
disadvantage because more is expected
of such a one.
A jerson ?nay have, a fine reputa
tion, but a very poor character; while
on tho other hand one may have
a bad reputation and a good character.
Some irls may think they have a hard
time at their homes. Frequently the
work' assigned them is not the kind
they prefer. It becomes tedious and
tiresome. At last it is found very
difficult to be industrious; but by be
ing patient and faithful a good charac
will be the grand rewaid. j
Those who possess character will cre
ate friends, gather enough of earth's
treasures, apd open a sure way to hap
piness arid honor. No one can esti
mate the real value of a character un
til it is once lost. Once lost so easily;
yet more than a lifetime may be re
quite I tD regain it.
A good name may be injured but if
ou once merit a bad name no matter
where you go, it will follow you. If
we are sufficiently watchful over our
own actions, we shall have no time to
lit id fault with the conduct of others.
The life of Franklin was marked
by propriety as ell as by self-respect.
He possessed more moral greatness
than appeared to ihe incredulous. The
character of Washington is one which
every young American should emulate.
SHORTNESS Of LIFE.

Looking over the past ages of the
world, when generation after genera
tion were swept away, the brevity of
human existence and individual influ
ence becomes apparent. True, thvre
were many whose powers and influence
were so great that their narut s and ac
tions are still quoted. But there are
millions who - have lived and died and
were forgotten centuries ago; their
names live only on their crumbling
tombstones. Life after life has passed
away and blooming cheeks have faded.
Each has performed its portion of labor,
felt its share of pain and pleasure, and
passed to that which awaits all.
White Nature smiled through un-
changed centuries, the sun shone, the
rain tell, the trees waved with grace
and beauty, and entire phalanx of men
have passed away, and have been for
gotten as easily as the vapor that is
absorbed by the influence of the glori
ous rays of the sun. While we live,
Nature smiles; and when, we die, the
sun still shines on our graves; This
grand universe takes no note of our de
parture. The world affords the same
attractions for us that were offered to
our ancestors; and when our names
will have been forgotten, similar pleas
ures, joys and smiles will await the
coming generations. ',
Only a short while and time with
us as with our ancestors will end.
Bye and bye the throbbing; heart will
be still, and (ho busy brain will cease
to plrtii, and the active hand will lie
motionless. Only for a sdioit time of
pain and pleasure, and the coffin lid
will close over us, the last solemn
prayer be said, tho mourners will dry
the tears from their weeping eyes, and
our names heard no more, even in the
househo'd prayers.
Time will not, .stop for us. The gap
death ! will make for a short time,
will 1)0 filleJ, and laughter will fall
from the lips of those who have
loved us tcn lt-i ly. Jov will take the
place of mourning, ar.d we will be for
gotten. This life thus brief, thus unimpor
tant, is a preparation for a higher and
more enduring existence m a home
where death does not come, where
mourning is never heard, where the
pei feet existence denied here is prom
ised to those who earn it in this brief
earthly sojourn.
It is but a short time in which we
have to gain this blissful eternity, and
not a movement should be wasted in
loitering or evil. It should always b
kept in mind, not as a terror, but as
a kindness of our wise Heavenly Fa
ther we cannnot kn&w the day nor the

The ancients were strong morally,
intellectually and physically. Their
lives' have done much to shanen our
characters, and in this way they have
in part become the architects of our
fortunes. How else could it have haiv
pened that people, who have had the
same opportunities, should be constant
ly presenting us with such different re
suits and rushing to various directions?
Difference of talent w ill not solve the
problem, because thatdineren.ee is often
in ravor of the unfortunate one. You
can see coming from the same school
sometimes from the same family, two
young men, one of whom is admitted
to be a genius of high order, the other
scarcely above mediocrity. You may

while the other will be plodding his
slow but sure way up the hill of pros
perity, gaining at every .step, and
reaching at last to eminence and dis
tinciion, an ornament to his family and
school, and a blessing to societv.
Wdiose work is this but his own?
The best school can only afford op
portunities for instruction. There
fore you must depend upon yourself as
to whether you will be instructed or
not, or to what point you will press
this opportunity, for there is no excel
lence without labor. You may find
yourself toiling over tie most intricate
problem of mathematics nntil you are -almostexhaiWcd;
but, "if at first you'
don't succeed, try, try, again, time
will bring you your reward, try, try,
again, " for there is i.o excellence with
out labor.
Genius exerted unwisely is like the
poor moth that flutters around a can
dle till it scorches itself to death. Gen
ius should be like the Condor pitching
from the summit of the Andes, soaring
bove the clouds, and at last sustain
ing itself at pleasure, in that empyreal
;ion, with an energy, invigorated
rather than weakened by the effort.
It is this capacity for high and lono-

er of searching investigation and these
ong and deep reaches for truth that
raise us to the highest point of emi
nence. This is the power from which

and ambitions of the most worthy per

If trouble comes, you need not look
at it as a punishment, only as some
thing to teach you to walk in the right
way. To be over-laden with adversity
has nothing in it of disgrace.
Indeed to stand composed in the
storm, amidst its rage and wildest
devastation, until it passes hy vou and
leaves you undismaj ed, is to be a true
man. But how many do thi.s? The
number is easily estimated.
The storms of adversity like those of
the ocean arouse and excite the skill
and fortitude of the voyager. A
smooth wa never made a skillful mari
ner, neither do uniwtei ruptej proser
ity and success qualify men for tbe
greatest usefulness and happiness. If
you sow, guided by duty, you will reap
happiness. Duty well performed 'is
the most favorable means to keep-misfortunes
and distress from our doors. '
It is good for one to bear the yoke
of misfortunes and uohappiness in
youth. We must Strain cur minds to
endure all things j and to meet and
overcome all difficulties and danger.
