yard are relieved of their sufferings by
simply putting thein to death.; It
seems to me that greater regard ouarht
to be had in thisr ""matter. One of the
most common disorders of poultry, and
most prevalent i- iu warm seasons is
Gajws. The causes of this are; foul
water, wet, damp roofs and feeding
sloppy food. It is caused by numer
ous small, red worm?, about the size of
a common needle, adhering to the
lining of the wind-pipe. Some one said
that under a large magnifying glass
they appear to be all head, and the
head all month. These worms deposit
. their -egsp in great numbers, larva order
animals, multiply very fast. As soon
as the bloodvessels cease to furnish
nourishment to them they lose their
hold and drop down onto the lungs and
death ensues by suffocation. A lousy
hen always has gaping chicks, because
the parasites enter the nostrils, and pass
through certain transformations which
produce the gape worm by the thou-
sands. Every well posted-farmer per
fectly understands how h"i3 hoise be
comes affected with the "bote," which
is an egg deposited on the hair of the
horse, generally on the fore legs and
inane, whence they are taken and swrd-
lowed by the horse. This egg in time,
transforms itself into the .destructive
lot. A givat many of them pass with
the food, and are voided by the horse,
These worms and the gapeworm get
mixed with the food of the chick by
sneezing etc. live there and tie picked
up by healthy fowls, which then, too,
become affected. To avoid chicks be
ing troubled with gapes, their runs
ought to be often plowed deep, turning
the soil clear over. Cultivating pota
toes in these run3 will likewise destroy
the worms; Tip and Koup are two
other diseases which sometime.! aflect
poultrv. The first is nothing but a
stoppage of the nostrils compellirg the
bird to respire through the mouth, and
i caused by exposure to damp or wet
weather. The latter is considered very
contagious and is much dreaded by
poultry-men. It affects ' fowls of nli
ages and is brought about by improper
feeding, want of cleanliness and proper
exercise. It is easily recognized by
noisf breathing, swollen eyes find dis
charges from the mouth and nostril?.
Separate the birds at once, proviue
comfortable quarters for them, attend
them and feed with greatest euro. In
brining fwols to the market thatfarm-
. er will always he, the most successful,
who can show fat birds, for the epicure
readily pays the highest price for it.
But the fat fouls at the same Urne
must be healthy in order to be apprcci-
' . ated. Fattening and over feeding gen
ei ally go hand in hand and produce dis
eases, as will also too close confinement.
The best and most successful way con
sists in the use of a movable coop, feed
bread soaked in skim milk, some wheat,
meat scraps, or clean 'grease. Once a
day give them some middlings, mtshed
potatoes and charcoal. Do not let
them have access to gravel and only
throw some in occasionally, feed regu
larly three times a day. As a matter
of cleanliness the coop must be mooved
dayy and in about a week the majority-
will be nicely fatted and ou'ht to
lwj disposed of within a week or two.
During this' fattening process they
must be kept quiet and only allowed as
much exercise as will keep them healthy.
There are, of course, a great number
of fine breed." of chickens, neaily all of
which have their admirers, and, no
doubt, have their good qualities. Vv'iri
me the Wyandottes take first rank.
They are a large, beautiful bird, sym
metrically built, good foragers, make
"excellent mothers, and, 'above all, are
untiring layers! furnishing the most
e"s durins just that pavt ot the year
when other breeds generally take a rest
. L e. from about November until March.
'Tliow n r linr.Ir. and. although a little
- J 3 ' -
backward in feathering, can stand any
climate and seem to feel particularly
at home in Oregon.

In building bavh wire fence some iut
the top wires on the outside and the
bottom wires on the inside of the en
closure. A bettor plan is to have half
the posts set with the required wires
on the outside of the field, and pos'-s
upon the enclosure, thus having alier
nate pohto on either side of the wires.
This is f-.u erior to the common practice
of settingill the posts in a straight
line. The former method serves, to
prevent tho wires being pushed off from
either side. In Missouri the general
wire fence consists of three wires at
tached to posts set sixteen feet apart.
There is a tendency now to add the
fourth wise at tin: bottom, thereby id
fording a fence praelic.d'y eilk-ier.t
