ROSEBURG REVIEW
MONDAY, MARCH 4, 1889.
the n6ott it x irin k.
"Tell me not in mournfu, numbers,"
' That the town is full of gloom,
For the man's a crank who slumbers,
. In these bustling days of boom.
"Life is real, life is earnest,"
And the grave is not its goal,
Every dollar that thou earnest '
Heli to make the old town roll.
But enjoyment and not sorrow
In our destined end or way,
If you have no money, borrow,
Buy a corner lot each day.
Lives of reat men a!! remind us
We can win immortal fame,
Let us leave the chumps behind us,
Ard well "get tnt re" just the same.
In this world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of life,
Let us make the dry days rattle
Buy a corner for your wife.
Let us then be up and doinj t - .
With a heart for any fate
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Booming early, booming late.

Red liquor and Christianity won't

s in, the other goes out.
Whisky is a good thing in its
place; but its place is in hell. If I go
v there I- will drink all I can get; but I
won't drink a drop of it hero.
O For every bar-keeper in your city
you can put qown a dozen broken
hearted wives and mothers. Tramp,
tramp, tramp, the boys are inarching,
sixty thousand strong, annually down
into drnnkard's graves, and into a
" drunkard's hell. God holds the Chris
tian people of thin city accountable for
all this blood and crime and death and
hell. May God come down upon 'this
city and tear the grave-clothes from
the bodv of this death and hell! 1
I am told that California is built
1 upon the wine and brandy industry,
and you will injure her prosperity
when you destroy this business. As
if you people couldn't raise anything
but a few wine grapes! I thank God
that your wine grapes are dying. If
California can't flourish without de
bauching the rest of the Union, I say
let her die. Your insane asylums are
peopled with men and women the pro
duct of your saloons. I never take
back things, and I have said it, and I
say it again, No one but an infamous
man will sell the stuff, and no one but
an infernal fool will drink it. A man
in Gamsville, Georgia, woke up in jail
one morning. He asked the jailor
' why he was confined there. "You've
murdered your wife," was the reply .
The man fell back in a dead faint, and
was unconscious for an hour. When
he eame to, he said to the jailor, "Get
a mob and a rope and hang me to the
nearest tree, for I have murdered the
best wife that ever lived."
Breeding Heavy Horses.
An eastern journal has a correspon
dent who inquires what the experience
has been of those who have bred Per
cheron, Clydesdale and Cleveland bay
horses to common mares. Oregji af
fords much experience of this kind; our
ranges have been supplied with good
sires of those breeds to mate with very
common stock and even with small In
dian ponies and their grades, and the
result has been an improved lot of ani
mals for-: their progeny, much larger
than the dams and possessing many of
the qualities of the sires. W. C. Myer
of Jackson county, has made a
thorough trial of breeding small marcs
to large horses with entire succesp, as
the product is a large and heavy horse,
strong even, if ungainly, that sells well
for heavy teaming purposes. Such an
imals will sell when smaller horses of
good build will not, as wtiht and
muscle are needed. A few crosses
with good sires will produce an im
proved mare that is caj able of pro
ducing better stock tht will command
a good price. The Eislein ranges of
Oregon and Washington are excellent
for horses, as the bunch grass is strong

mental depression, a hacking cough and gen
eral debility. Only a few of the above-named
symptoms are likely to bo present in any one

"UntoM Agony from Catarrh
Prof. TV'. IIausner, the famous mesmerist,
of Ithaea, N. Y writes: "Somo ten years ago
I suffered untold agony from chronio nasal
catarrh. My family physician gave me up as
incurable, and said I must die. My case was
such a bad one, that every day, towards sun
set, my voice would become so hoarse I could
barely speak above a whisper. In the morning
my coughing and clearing of my throat would
almost strangle me. By the use of Dr. Sage's
Catarrh Remedy, in three months, I was a well
man, and the cure has been permanent."
"Constantly Hawking: and Spitting'
TnoMAS J. RcsniNQ, Esq., 2901 Fine. Street,
St. Louis, Mo., writes: "I was a great sufferer
from catarrh for three years. At times I could
hardly breathe, and was constantly hawking
and spitting, and for the last eight months
could not breathe through the nostrils. I
thought nothing could bo done for me. Luck
ily, I was advised to try Dr. Sage's Catarrh
Remedy, and I am now a well man. I believe
it to be the only sure remedy for catarrh now
manufactured, and one has only to give it a
fair trial to experience astounding results and
a permanent cure."
A complete Treatiso on Catarrh, giving val
uable hints as to clothing, diet, and other
matters of importance, will bo mailed, post
