HER REWARD-
A story written expressly (or Thb Review,
(By Mrs. E, F. Yt.) .
Marcia Bertrand was certainly a
very happy -woman; her'a was consid-
erea a brilliant match, ana many
maneuvering mammas were fearfully
shocked when the handsome, wealthy
Harold Bertrand married plain Marcia
Far. lie would have none of the
frivilons butterflies of fashion, but
Marcia with her good, loving heart
and generous, compassionate nature,
for it was to her came the poor and
maimed, and never a beggar was
turned away empty handed: "What
little time we live here, we should hold
out a helping band to the poor and
lowly," sho would say. Harold was
really generous and lavished his wealth
'on all his friends, but he had rather
Marcia would not occupy so xn'uclfof
her time and thoughts upon the beg
gars, it really did them no great good,
and only encouraged others to become
wortjileas, but Marcia 's views were
different -
They had been married eight years
and neve.' were two, more suited to
each other, there had never been a
secret between them, he lavished his
love and; wealth upon her. There
were two lovely little children, Harold
six years old, and little Lillian three.
Harold was a very earnest child, and
seemed older than he really was; his
eyes were large and blue, and his hair
was thick with many curls, and Lillian
was she a little Fairy or only a sun
beam? Her eyes like her brother's were
blue, and woven out of sunshine was
her sunny, golden hair, her long curl
ing lashes swept her little cheeks.
Marcia would watch then-, with many
proud and loving smiles.
In days gone by, there was one who
loved her, with such deep devotion, he
would have lain down his life for her;
poor, worthless, dissipated Claud
Felix. Many times her thoughts
would wander back, and the memory
of those dark pleading eyes would come
to her, as he knelt at her feet and
would plead in accents wild: "Marcia,
Marcia, if you would only help me,
nly be mine, you can take my life in
your own hands, you can mould me at
your wi'L O, Marcia! I would lead a
different life, you could reform me, as
no other could!" but she would say
goi.tly. hia life was in his own hands,
to be brave and reform himself. That
poor lost boy, that wrecked life, she
had not the power to save him. Since
she was married she had seen him but
few times, "only to gaze upon her
afar, she is as far," he would think
"she is as far above me, as the stars
are above the lifeless clods." The very
thought of that poor boy would cause
the jealous panzs to shoot through
Harold's passionate heart; he could not
even bear the thought of any other
loving his peerless Marcia. He strove
to crush and drive out the demon from
his heart, but sittan rules the heart of
passion and seldom loosens his hold
uiion a willing victim.
It was early spring, the crocuses bei
gan to push their little faces timidly
out to the sunshine. They had been
so snug and warm down there in the
bosom of mother earth, would this
other world be as tenderto them? they
thought. The tender leaves fluttered
in the soft breeze, Marcia was out
anions her flowers, the moon was
hanging low in the heavens, the air was
soft and mild, the day had been so fair.
Dear little crocuses," she thinks "how
sweet and timid you look out here in
the moonlight" "Marcia" a voice calls
to her, a strangely -familiar voice, but
now, so fall of horror, fearlessly she
turns and meets the dark imploring
eyes of her brother Clarence the
brother she used to nurse when he was
a little, lisping child, it was to Marcia
he always came with his dead pets and
broken toys, dear little, motherless
Clare, she would hold bis little head
upon her breast, dry his tears, and
hush his little sobs. He came to her
now: "Marcia, Marcia! hide me, hide
me! they are after me, hide me and
