ROSEBURG'- REVIEW
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1887.
rniMEBS IXK IS KIXG.
There is a host of men who boast
Of powder, cotton, sleam;
liut every hour the mighty power
Of printer's ink is seen.
It moves the world as easily
As does some mighty thing,
And men preclaim in depots' cars
Thai printer's ink is king.
The man of gold, of wealth untold,
Printer's ink may scorn,
Or knit his brow, nor deign to bow
To one sotwly born;
Uut printer's ink has built iu throne
Where minds their tributes bring,
And God's most gifted intcllccU
Shout "Printer's ink is king!"
King of the world of thought refined,
No abject slave it claims;
Where supeslition's victims, pine,
It bursts their servile chains.
In every clime, in coming years,
Will men proud anthems sing,
And round the world the echoes float,
That printer's ink is king!

This is the first of them, the first of
those which Byrant sang so beautifully
of. The autumn season h here unless

has no reason to think i', U. On the
contrary quite the reverse. Along the
hedge rows the golden rod and the frail
and beautiful and shy wood aster lift
golden chalices and purple disk?, here
and there a fiery finger is laid on maple
leaf. There are no wild gripes, or
hickory nuts or walnuts or chin que
pins or paw paws or persimmons to

and the suit travels further to the south
a thousand (laming glows of puiple and
crimson and geld will gleam on the
hills and m the valleys, and the long
cool evenings will afford ample oppor
tunity f"r popping corn and pulling
c.mdy, and the crip frosty mornings
will make it necessary to saw a good
lot of wood and take it into ttie house?
I and this is what makes the days m
Lmiholv to the average boy. It ha
1 - - -
taken some time t gt ti it but this
is about the facts in th'f case.
The builder, in the erection of a
house, in ly h ivc carefully studied its
propoi tions; may have abundantly sup
plied the curved line; may have given
charming variety and contrast in its
exterior ornamentation; may have ob
served the law of parallels, and yet,
when tho different colors are applied
in the completion of the building, the
whole may bo offensive to the sight,
because of inharmonious coloring. As
towhat shades will please the taste of
most people will depend a good deal
on fashion. The eye becomes edu
cated to a certain color in a particular
place, and we are pleased to find those
. colors there. We become habituated
to seeing the white collar at the neck,
and llfft cuff at the wrist. We are
pleased with the yellow watch, the
black boot and the white kerchief, and
this pleasure arises from habit, the re
sult of fashion. Thus we accustom
ourselves to certain colors and patterns
' of dress because of fashion; and the
same is true of shades and tints op
buildings.
But there are various colors, or cer
tain Mendings of colors that we can
never look upon with pleasure in in
terior decoration or exterior finish of
buildings. A safe rule to follow in
the selection of colors is that of choos
ing a leading shade in the furnishing of
a room, or in painting the outside of a
house, and for contrast and variety
u sing other tints of essentially the same
shade. Thus, if olive be chosen as the
principle color, the lighter and darker
shade of olive will look vell with it.
If brown be selected, lighter and darker
browns will harmonize, and that color
will be safe. If tho leading shade is
warm, all tho colors in the room caw
safely partake of the same tint. If a
cold shade ia adopted, the cold tints
will be in harmony.
If several colors are used in paiutirg
a house, they may sometimes contrast
strongly if they harmonize. Thus a
white house may have green blinds,
and a brown house may have red trim
mings, but it is not possible to create
a pleasing effect by a blending of dark
blue and scarlet, or light blue and
brown.
To attain the best effects in painting
the upper part of a building, much at
tention must be given to color. In
looking at a roof we see it between
white or blue sky. It should harmon
. ize therefore with the blue, and yet
snilicicntly contrast to be distinctly
seen. To accomplish this, crestings
finals, towers and all projections, point
ing skyward, should be dark or black,
in order that we may see them dis
tinctly; to paint them blue or white
will cause them, as we look upward, to
disappear from view.
A house standing on an eminence,
surrounded by trees and shrubbery,
seen at a distance, will appear best if
white; but whether white or other colors
shall be chosen for any building will
depend upon the situation and circum
stances, the rule being that harmony
of color is essential in order to produce
pleasing effect. Ex.
A man is not responsible for the na
ture of his mind any more than a far
mer is responsible for the nature of
the immediate portion of the earth he
cultivates: but a man is responsible for
the use he makes of the mind he has,
or of the soil he treats.
'Tis a great point in a gallery how
" you hang pictures, and not less in soci
ety how you seat your party. When
a man meets his accurate mate society
begins and life is delicious. Emerson.
