ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1887.
VIEW OF VMPQUA VALLEY IX ISXt.
(Bt as Emigrants of 1S.
Upon an elevated night,
t'T was many years ago,)
I stood; and rapt in pnsive mood,
Imbibed the scene below,
My gaze was to the setting sun,
Where clouds of orange hue,
Marked where the God of day would sink
And bid the world adieu;
Before me in the distance reared,
With yerdure evergreen,
The towering mountains grandly rose,
Which "dignified the scene,"
And at their base with downward course,
Toward the ocean's shore
The river sweeps, with seething noise.
I heard the distant roar
And from its margin westward stretched,
A smiling valley lay
Now clothed in wild luxuriance,
With flowers bright and gay,
There in a little copse of wood,
Scarce seen in silence stood.
Beneath the maple's spreading boughs,
The red man's crude abode,
Whose simple life, and wants so few
lie glides through life apace,
Disdains to toil to cirn his bread,
His pride is in the chase,
I lis worship is through natures' laws,
And his "untutored mind
Sees God in storm, in lightings flash
And hears him in the wind;'
I'll leave him in his humble hut,
And southward turn my eyes,
To where the vale and woodland meet,
And hills in grandeur rise,
Before me undulating spreads
Like ocean waves, the hills,
Intersperced with woodlands, vales,
And softly murmuring rills,
Aud there meandering through the vale,
The "North Umpqaa" in view,
Whose restless waters ne'er has bourne,
Ought, sav the rude canoe,
My gaze still bending to the south,
Along the vcrdent slope,
Like emerald carpet lay the vale;
The scene how vast a scope?
Beyond as far as eye can reach,
The South Umpqua is seen
With wavelets rippling in the breeze,
Emits a glimmering sheen,
The landscape was a glowing one,
A panorama grand,
And was by nature thus portrayed,
With an unsparing hanJ,
The hills, ihe vales, the woodland slope,
AH panoplied in green.
The yielding oaks, the towering pines,
And laurels decked the scene;
All in a primeval state appeared,
As from the "hand of God."
For nothing civilized as yet,
Had pressed. the virgin sod;
And all around and everywhere,
And every thing I saw,
Convinced me that the scene displayed,
Was simply natures law, ,
For here was system plainly stamped,
And order all arranged,
Impressively conveyed this truth,
That nature has not changed.
And then unto the rosy east,
I turned with pensive gaze,
Where lingered on the mountains crest,
The suns declining rays,
And as it tinged the lofty peaks,
With its soft, mellow light,
The twilights deejrening gloom, .
Now warns the near approach of night
And as the nodding fir and pine,
Was by the Zephyr's bowed,
"Soft as noon-beams stealing o'er,
The verge of a summer's, cloud"
Deep shadows now were gathering 'round,
The suns last lingering ray,
Had disappeared, when musingly,
I homeward bent my way.
S INSET,
A Remarkable Growth.
The nianv friends of Messrs. Mont
gomery, Ward & Co., formerly an 227
and 229 Wabash Av., Chicago, will be
glad to know that the rapid growth of
their business has forced them to re
move from Wabash A v. to 111, 112,
113, and 114 Michigan Ave., where
they have purchased a magnificent
building, the seven floors of which they
will occupy exclusively. These seven
floors are each 100x165 feet, aggrega
ting nearly 120,000 square feet (about
three acres) of floor surface. The new
quarters will enable them to handle
their larsre business to the better ad-
- - 0
vantage of their thousands of custo
v mers. Fifteen years ago Messrs. Mont
gomery, Ward & Co. occupied but one
room and that only 25x40 feet The
enormous growth of their business
during these fifteen years can only be
explained by the fact that they sell di
rect to consumers, supplying all their
wants, and never misrepresent any ar
ticle. The success of this house
proves the old saying, that "Honesty is
the best policy," and from this policy
they never deviate. The Fall cata
logue issued by Messrs. Montgomery
Ward fc Co', ought to be in every fam
ily.
On the 17 th. inst, the President and
his wife, the Governor of the original
thirteen States and the other digni
taries did attend the celebration of the
Constitutional Centennial at Philadel
phia, and a great time was had. It is
hoped that the events of the day were
in keeping with the spirit of the occa
sion, and that there was no outburst
of partisan feeling by thoughtless en
thusiasts.

The project to ojien a fine roadway
from the Aqueduct Bridge in Washing
ton city to the tomb of Washington
to be called Mt. Vernon Avenue, seems
to meet with great public favor, and
there can be little doubt that the work
will be done, as tho popular support,
both of the citizens of the District of
Columbia and of Alexandria countv.
Virginia, which is becoming enlisted in
behalf of this truly patriotic and poli
tic undertaking, seems to warrant such
a conclusion. There will be a public
meeting at Alexandria on the 15th
to consider the matter.
A little after 6 o'clock last evening
a lady carrying a child took a Michigan
avenue car. There were several men
occupying seats, but no 0113 offered to
make room for her. The driver, notic
ing this, brought his own stool into the
car and gave her a neat in the aisle.

A Creaking Hinge
Is dry and turns hard, until oil Is applied,
alter which it moves easily. When the
joints, or binges, of the body are stiffened
and inflamed by Rheumatism, they can
not be moved without causing the most
excruciating pains. Ayet'a Sarsaparilla,
by its action on the blood, relieves this
condition, and restores the joints to good
working order.
. Ayer's Sarsaparilla has effected, in our
city, many most remarkable cures, in
cases which baffled the efforts of the
most experienced physicians. Were it
necessary, I could give the names of
many individuals who have been cured
by taking this medicine. In my case it
has worked wonders, relieving me of
Rheumatism,
after being troubled with it for years. In
this, and all other diseases arising from
impure blood, there is no remedy with
which I am acquainted, that affords such
relief as Ayer's Sarsaparilla. It. H.
Lawrence, M. D., Baltimore, Md. -
Ayer's Sarsaparilla cured me of Gout
and Rheumatism, when nothing else
would. It has eradicated every trace of
disease from my system. R. H. Short,
Manager Hotel Belmont, Lowell, Mass.
I was, during many months, a sufferer
from chronic Rheumatism. The disease
afflicted me grievously, in spite of all the
remedies I could find, until I commenced
using Ayer's Sarsaparilla. I took sev
eral bottles of this preparation, and was
speedily restored to health. J. Fream,
