far to the eastward of the Rocky mount

It is ia a mild way a sort of sirocco;
but ia without the noxious qualities of j
the sirocco that blows from the Libyan j
deserts into Italy and Sicily. It appears j
to be a mixture of the dry, heated air of
the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico,
risin and minadins with the warm but
moister breezes moving eastward off the
Pacific Ocean. Somewhere in the upper

Before the chinook the snowdrifts melt
as before a blast of hot air blown
through a tube and directed against
them. As if by magic, the snowy cov
ering of the hills and valleys disappears.
The atmosphere is everywhere warm and
balmv. So much moisturo has been
taken up, by the air during the process j
of melting away the snow that the
breezes ;are soft and Bwcet as those of

When old winter howls and prowls
through the territories of our northern
neighbors and the whole face of the
country lies buried in snow, no wonder
that we see in their newspapers so
many appeals to the "clerk of tha
weather" to send then the "blessed

Good Fences on the Farm. f-
Many; an animal becomes breachy
because of the carelessness of the
farmer in looking after his fences. A
board gets loose or broken, and this
not having been attended to at once,
the animal gets out of the inclosure.
Having ence done this the beast is more
apt to try again, and finally even a
good strong fence will not restrain it.
Tho chealpest and best way is to build
a goodllnce in tho beginning, and then
see that it is kept in good repair, so
none of the stock will be tempted to get
over it or break it down. Animals kept
in lots surrounded by good fences are
not likely to become unruly, and
should be obtained that has acqui
this habit, it will be found better to dis
pose of it, lest it not only prove a
source of constant annoyance, but also
be the means of making others in his
herd trqublesome. National Live-Stock

House servants in Germany are
poorly paid, and work hard. Their
duties begin frequently before daybreak
and continue sometimes till past mid
night The floors must be scrubbed
every other day, and the windows every
week; for this a broom is not known,
but a brush is the article used. For her
services a servant gets only about sixty
cents a week.
