ROSEBURG 'REVIEW
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 188.
SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY.
The latest Belgian invention of
locknut is one threaded a little smaller
than the bolt and cut through on one
side, to give it a spring.
Spider silk offers little hope of a
profitable industry. A season's work
Of a collector in India resulted' in ten
pounds of spider's, webs at a cost of
about $16.00 in Bombay. Springfield
(O.) Times.
Vast deposits of brown and canncl
c oals have been discovered in Ouachita
County, Arkansas. It is easy coal to
mine, and of superior quality for heat-
ing and steam-making purposes. N.
Y. Examiner.
"Sand-paper'" is now made without
cither sand or paper. Glass is pulver
ized and sifted on muslin, which has
been covered with a coating of glue. It
is better and more durable than the
old-fashioned sand-paper.
"Agriculture is, beyond question,
the leading industry of our State, with
more capital invested and more labor
employed than all other interests com
bined; and it deserves and should re
ceive most generous consideration.
Prosperity in this industry brings pros
perity to all others." So says the Gov
ernor of Wisconsin in his last annual
message. Montreal Witness.
A noteworthy invention has .re
cently been made- by an English
woman. Miss Heale, which is now on
exhibition in Ixmdon. It is a method
of diffusing light through water, the
effect being to render it much more
brilliant and at the same time much
softer. A light that throws its rays 140
feet can be furnished at a cost of 2
cents an hour. . , -'
The Age of Steel publishes a- sum
mary of the statistics collected by the
American Iron and Steel Association in
the nail trade. These statistics show that
exclusive of l-ailroad spikes and horse
shoe nails our total production of cut
, nails and cut spikes in 1886 was 8',1G0,
973 kegs of 100 pounds each, against
6,696,815 kegs in 1885, 7,581,379 kegs
in 1884, and 7,762,747 kegs in 1883. The
production of 1886 was the largest the
country lias ever attained.
A device for protecting factory op
eratives from accidents by being caught
by swiftly-running wheels has been in
vented by Robert F. Fenny, of New
Haven. It consists in widening the
shaft between pulleys with strings, spi
rally and rather loose, and then enclos
ing the shaft in zinc, or tin or other
metal cylinder. The strings simply
prevent any noise from contact of the
shaft with the metallic cylindrical
jacket Should a woman get caught by
' her hair, it would begin to wind up on
the jacket, which would instantly stop
its motion, leaving the shaft inside to
revolve, but without doing harm to
whoever might be caught

THE BRINK OF THE PRECIPICE.
The Slight Step that Haa Proven Fatal t
to Many Men and Women. i
Recently Senator Pike ot New Hamp
shire, while talking with a friend sud
denly threw up his head, gasped, and
without a word fell to the ground dead.
General McClellan went out for a drive,
came home and died in his chair. Will
iam H. Vanderbilt is conversing with
Mr. Garrett of the Baltimore and Ohio
Bailroad in his own house, and suddenly
falls to the floor
dead. A promi
nent citizen of
Boston hastens to
catch a train at
the depot, and
dies before the
train leaves the
station. A well
known Bociety
lady of Hartford
while dancing at
a reception sud
denly becomes
felt, dead. faint, and before
she can be conveyed from the room has
ceased to ' breathe. Those are a few of
the sudden deaths of which we hear, but
the vast number of which we do not hear
is thousands. Are they all caused by
heart disease ? Do the mysterious beat
ings of that delicate instrument, that
works day and night without ceasing,
stop of their own accord, and thus bring
death at once !
Mr. Henry T. Dodge resides at East
Frovidence," R. I. About six months
ago he felt a shortness of breath, a pecu
liar faintness, and occasional shooting
pains at his heart. He noticed that hi3
pulse was irregular and would once in a

symptoms were
not continuous,
and some days
he would feel
as well as us
ual, but at
other times he
would be pain
fully aware
that he had a
heart and that
it was diseased.
Finally his
body began to the doctob'h call.
bloat, and he consulted a number of doc
tors. They all pronounced his trouble
heart disease, but would not prescribe
for him because they said it was beyond
their reach. Mr. Dodge then went to Dr.
George D. Wilcox, one of the best physi
cians in New England. After a careful
examination Dr. Wilcox told him there
was but one thing that could cure him,
and to try that as a last resort. With but
little hope Mr. Dodge consented. In two
days the bloating disappeared, the pain
departed, the pulse became full and regu
lar, and Mr. Dodge is well and .in perfect
health to-day because Hunt's Remedy
saved him.
Dr. Wilcox, in conversation with the
writer on this subject, said : "In a care
ful observation extending over twenty
years I have found Hunt's Remedy in
vast numbers of cases of an organic
nature exceedingly efficient and acting
very promptly. Its power is best illus-

heart lesions with
dropsy, also in simple
enlargement of the
heart without valvu
lar disease. When the
heart becomes weak
ened and unable to
circulate the blood,
Hunt's Remedy is so
valuable that I have
teen in the habit of
naming it "Heart
ONE OCT OF FIVE. lOniC"
This is what one of the ablest physi
cians in this country says about this
wonderful remedy, which has won its
way to such popularity solely on its'
merits. One out of every five men,
women, and children has functional dis
ease of the heart, and one out of every
eight organic disease of the heart ! This
is a terrible fact, but a solemn fact, never
theless, and it is cause for gratitude that
a remedy has been foimd which will not
only check the disease in time, but pre
vent its increase after the first symptoms
are observed.

Vour Children
Are constantly exposed to danger from
Colds, Whooping Cough, Croup, and
diseases peculiar to the throat and
lungs. For such ailments, Ayer's
Cherry Pectoral, promptly adminis
tered, affords speedy relief and cure.
As a remedy for "Whooping Cough,
with which many of our children were
afflicted, we used, daring the past win
ter, with much satisfaction, Ayer's
Cherry Pectoral. For this affection, we
consider this preparation the most effi
cacious of all the medicines which have
come to our knowledge. Mary Park

My children have been peculiarly sub

I have usedAyer's Cherry Pectoral
