ROSEBURG REVIEW FRIDAY, JANUARY, 28, 1887, WRITE IIIEM A LETTER TO-SIG IIT Donl go to the theater, concert or ball, But stay in your room to-night; Deny yourself of the friend that call, And a good long letter arrito Write to the tad old folk at home, Who sit when the day ia done, With folded hands and downcast eyes. And think of the absent one. Don't selfishly scribble "Excuse my baste, I've scarcely the time to write." Lett their brooding thoughts go waiuleriug back To many a by-gone night, When they lost their needed sleep and rest, And every breath was a prayer That God would leave their delicr.te babe Tj their tender love and care. Don't let them feel that you've no more ueo J Of their love and counsel wise; For the heart grows stongly sensitive Whem age has dimmed the eyes; It might be well to let them believe You sever forgot them quite! That you deem it a pleasure when tar away, Long letters home to write. . Don't think that the young and giddy friends -Who make your pastime gay. llavn half the anxious thought for you That the old folks have to-day. The duty of writing do notput off; Let sleep or pleasure wait, Lest the letter for which they looked or longed Be a day or an hour, too late. For the sad old folk at home, With locks fast turning white, Are longing to hear from the absent one Write thema letter to-night. VOITXVSICATIVS. Washington, Jan. 11, 1887. The week's work m Congress can ue easily summarized, aa the Senate was in session only three days' and the House four. Besides a good deal of. other pri vate legislation the Senate pensioned the widow of General Logan at $2,000 a year, secretly discussed the Mexican Reciprocity treaty, and debated the im portant pending bill on Interstate Com merce. The House passed three of the regular Appropriation bills, several dozen pi ivate pension bills, and dis cussed bills on the public buildings and nava reorganization. But what should be emphasized in the work of a demo cratic House is the passage, without opposition, and without any provision for Confederate Boldiers, of a pension bill for the current year appropriating over $76,000,000. This amount is nearly as much as . were the entire expenses of the govern ment before the war, and it ought to put the republican ranters of the last presidential campaign to tho blush, if anvthinff could. Democratic close- ' fistadnesg. indeed. Wherein does it consist Senator Beck has by no means given ui) his intention of pushing his bill to prohibit members of Congress from acting as attorneys for railroads which have received government aid, although liis long silence had led some of the railroad Senators' to hope that they would not again be confronted by this busbear. It is a sore trial for them to tt.i.A 4- (dAa io 1taarlfil1 mpncnt'P. PS. pecially since they know it is " urged forward by a practically unanimous public sentiment. The debate on the Inter State Commerce bill is being long drawn out in the Senate as a shield to keep Mr. Beck off, but even it must come to an end when all the speakers have made their speeches for or against it. : " It seems that the Revenue Reform " question is really coming to the front now. and that another effort will be made to reach those surplus- millions, This time it wilt be by the interna revenue men, Mr. Randall and his fo lowers. They will advocate that the whole of the tobacco tax be removed, that the tax on alcohol used in the arts bo abolished, and that fruit brandies bo relieved of tax, but as to whether they will attempt any tariff alterna tions, no one can predict. The mem . bera of Congress from tobacco produc ing states feel that it is a duty they owe their constituents to vote for the repeal of the internal tax on tobacco in almost any shape that it might be presented. These are exciting days for the Sen ators whose terms expire on the fourth of March, and there are many indica tions that the Senate will be much changed after that time, but whether or riffi it will be improved in character or abilityis an open question. Sena, i tor Conger of Michigan, who has been j in public life for thirty-two years, is to . be succeeded by CoL Stockbridge, be-1 cause the latter is a richer man. The - long bearded republican milllaiiaire from Nevada, Mr. M. W. Stewart, is cominsj back for another term. No one objects to him, however, as he was rather a lively man in the Senate, and having a pretentious looking residence here, takes a good deal' of interest in the improvement of Washington city. It is still doubtful who will get Gen. Logan's place, but Pennsylvania sends Mr. Quay, a well known boss and in triguer, instead of Mr. Mitchell; and Minnesota sends ex-Governor Davis, a tariff reformer, a writer of a book on Shakespeare, and a so-called orator in place of Mr. McMillan. Nebraska is hesitating between a demagogue and a magnate, and California is still in doubt, as are also New York, Massa chusetts, Tennessee, and other states. ' When the House took up the bill for a Re-organizatien of the Navy Mr. Goff of West Va., who was Secretary of the Navy for a few weeks under Mr. Hayes, entered upon a lengthy criti cism of the bill, and charged the Jack of a Nayy to the Democratic party. Represcnative Buck thought it strange that after Republican Secretaries of the Navy had for years reccotnmended thi3 same kind of legislation, it should now he opposed because a Democratic Secretary had recommended it- Mr. Bou telle of Maine, who is one of the narrowest partisans on the Republican side, denied that Mr. Goff or himself had changed front in regard to this matter. But Mr. Buck did not waver. Said he: "Yo. are opposed to it to day you were opposed to it yesterday, you will be opposed to it to-morrow and everlastingly opposed to it as long as a democratic secretary is in power." As to the present condition of dem ocracy and what it is doinjj, Gen. Black Commissioner of Pensions, gives a pic ture in a recent letter to Allen G. Thurman, which is calculated to re joice the heart of every one to whom success is dear. Said he, "A trinra- hant democracy administers the af fairs of the republic. Quietlv but positively the reforms that have long been demanded by the people, so far as the Administrative branch of the Government is concerned, are in vig orous enect. Jbconomy and law are the standards of official action. Paiti- Sanship does not now throw its sword into the scales of jus' ice. Submission to assessments bv public officials for partisan purposes is not a condition of public service.' Contracts are not et to the highest partisan bidder and the public lands are safe within the pale of f-he statutes." ''Men boast here," he said, 'that they work for yeais without a day off; in Europe that would be considered a crime." Mr. II. II. "Jiot at all. we nave always hereto fore closed our laboratory during July, August ana September, but this sum mer we have kept it running day and night to supply the demand, which has been three times greater than ever be fore in our history at this season." "How do you accouut tor tins f" ; "The increase has come from the uni versal recognition of the excellence of our preparations. We have been nearly ten years Deiore tne public ana tne sales are constantly increasing while our newspaper aaveruHing is constantly aimxmming. Why, ' high scientific and medical au thorities, now publicly concede that our Warner's safe cure is the only scientific specific for kidney and liver diseases and for all the many diseases caused by them." "Have you evidence of this?" "Abundance ! Onlv a few weeks ago Dr. J. L. Stephens, of Lebanon, Ohio, a specialist for the cure of narcotic, etc., habits told me that a number of emi nent scientific medical men had been experimenting for years, testing and an alyzing all known remedies for the kid neys and liver, tor, as you may be aware. the excessive use of all narcotics and stimulants destroys those organs, and until they can be restored to health the nabits cannot De DroKen up: Among the investigators were such men as J. M. Hall. M. D.. President of the State Board of Health of Iowa, and Alexander Neil, M. D., Professor of Surgery in the college of Physicians and Surgeons and president of the Academy of Medicine at Columbus, who, after exhaustive inquiry, reported that there was no remedy known to schools or to scienunc inquiry eouai to warnec s sate cure! "Are many persons addicted to the use of deadly drugs "Tliprft nrft fortv millions of nnnnlft in the world who use opium alone, and there are many hundreds of thousands in this country who are victims of mor phine, opium, quinine and cocaine. They think they have no such habit about them so many people are uncon scious victims of these habits. They have pains and symptoms of what they call malaria and other diseases, when in reality it is the demand in the system for these terrible drugs, a demand that is caused largely by physicians' prescrip tions which contain so many dangerous drugs, and strong spirits, and one that must be answered or silenced in the kid neys and liver by what Dr. Stephens says is the only judney and liver specinc He also says that moderate opium and other drug eaters, a tney sustain tne kidney and liver vigor with thatgreat remedy, can keep up these habits in moderation." ' ' Well does not this discovery give you a new revelation of the power of safe cure?" -" "No, sir : for years I have tried to con vince the public that nearly all the dis eases of the human system originate in some aisorder of the kidneys or. liver. and hence I have logically declared that if our specific were used, over ninety per cent, oi tnese ailments would disap pear, xne liver and Kidneys seem to absorb these poisons from the blood and become depraved and diseased.' "When these eminent authorities thus publicly admit that there is no remedy like ours to enable the kidneys and liver to throw off the fnghtiul effects of ai deadly drugs and excessive use of stim ulants it i3 an admission of its power as great as any one could desire; for if through its mnuencc aione tne opium morphine, quinine, cocaine and liquor habits can be overcome, what higher testimonial of its specific power could be asked for?" "You really believe then, Mr. Warner that the majority of diseases come from kidney and liver complaints;" "I do! When you see a person moping and groveling about, half dead and half alive, year alter year, you may sureiy put him down as having some kidney and hver trouble." "The other day I was talking with Dr. Fowler, the eminent occulist of this citv who said that half the patients who came to him for eye treatment were affected bv advanced kidney disease. Now many people wonder why in middle life their eye sight becomes so poor. A thorough course of treatment with Warner's safe cure is what they need more than a pair of eye glasses. 1 he kidney poison in the blood always attacks the weakest part of. the body ; with some it affects the eves : with others the head : with others the stomach cr the lungs, or rheumatic disorders follows and neuralgia tears them in pieces, or they lose the powers of taste, smell or become impotent m other functions of the body. What man would not give his all to have the vigor of youth at command ?" "The intelligent physician knows that these complaints are but symptoms ; they are not the disorder, and tney are symp toms not of disease of the head, the eye or stomach, or of virility, necessarily but of tho kidney poison in the blood and they may prevail and no pain occur in the kidnevs." It is not strange that the enthusiasm which Mr. Warner displays in his ap preciation of Ins own remedy, which re stored him to health when the doctors said he could not live six months, should become infectious and that the entire world should pay tribute to its power, For as Mr. Warner says, the sales are constantly increasing, while the news paper advertising is constantly diminish fnc.
