Slovenly Habit of Speech.
It ia a curious fact that no mere school
system has yet succeeded in making
children speak good English; probably
because this must bo done chiefly
through the ear, and so many teachers
either err themselves or do net exert
enough of positive influence to overcome
the slovenly habits the, children , bring
from home. . Mr. Ilowells declares that
many Harvard graduates say "I don't
know as," and though I suppose the
standard there is as high as anywhere,
there is no doubt that this is true. It is
a melancholy fact, but I have myself
heard a Harvard professor say "We
was" in his class room, and probably the
best institution in the Land is not free
from like blemishes. How many teach
ers of pnblie or private schools can be
guaranteed against saying, in moments
of entire familiarity, "I done it," or
using "I come" as a past tense? How
many can steer their way with habitual
accuracy between "set" and . "sat."
Yet these are not scholastic refine
ments, but matters of good-breeding.
Any person erring in these simple mat
ters is like one who eats with his knife
or tilts his chair in company; he classes
himself at once among those who have
to be apologized for, who have to be ac
cepted after some explanation. And
even where the teacher is unexception
able, the intimate society of school or
college not merely coins slang and keeps
it in motion, but communicates inele
gancies of speech from one to another,
like measles or the whooping-cough.
T. W. Higginson in Harper's Bazar.
Where He Blisses It.
I wonder if anybody lives the life he
wants to, and has things happen to him
as ho expects or wishes. If the power
of dreaming were taken away life
wouldn't be worth living for. The sum
mit of all men's ambition is in dream
land, and it is a wise dispensation of
Providence that they never get there.
However high we climb, there is still
another peak beyond. The humble'boot
black.looking up from the shining leather
doe3 not wish he were the swell
who is having his boots cleaned. He
wants to run the stand, and when he
reaches that dignity, he get3 his eye on
me cigar store attached and buys that,
only to dream of owning the saloon at
the back. The senator sees "the presi
dent's chair in the distance and when he
gets there he looks over toward Wall
street and sees Jay Gould and Hunting
ton away up on a higher hill, and when
a man gets all the money he thinks he
wants he looks across and sees a news
paper editor sitting above him .and look
ing down upon him. Then he wants to
run a newspaper, and before ho reaches
the summit of hi3 ambition he's bank
rupt and got to begin all over again.
San Franciscjp Chronicle.
. Sons of tlio Wealthy Japanese.
The sons of many of the wealthier
classes are educated in tho United States
and England. It is no very unusual
thing, therefore, to find among the
younger men of the governing and com
mercial classes, those who speak the
English language fluently and well.
Like all the dark races, the Japanese
seem to .h?ve an aptness for acquiring a
foreign language. They have retentive
memories, and the imitative faculty is
well developed. But their capacity for
abstract reasoning is but feeble, com
pared with Caucasian, or even with the
cool-headed Chinaman. There are many
schools and litorary institutions where
the higher mathematics are taught; but
among all the graduates of these in
ititutions that I met, I remember but
one or two who seem to have much
practical knowledge of the higher
mathematics. They know all the lead
ing diagrams in Euclid, but are seldom
able to demonstrate a proposition except
as they have memorized tho formula. A
few cross questions concerning an ordi
nary problem in algebra usually puts

Cold Water Colors.
A series of paints, wliich are made
ready for use simply by the addition of
cold water, havo for some time past
been successfully introduced abroad, the
paint thus produced drying, it is stated,
with a fine, hard surface, which, al
though mixed only with water, is im
pervious to rain and uninjured by
frequent washings, even with diluted
disinfectants; as oil and turpentine are
also dispensed with, these paints have
the additional advantage of being free
from objectionable smelL They can be
used for exterior work on wood as well
as on brick, plaster, iron or stone, and
for interiors they are of course peculi
arly applicable. 'The paint can likewise
be reduced by oil, which produces a
hard and glossy surface. It is thought
that non-poisonous and washable paints
will prove of peculiar adaptation for
tropical countries generally, where
cleanliness and freedom from infection
are particularly requisite, but where, as
is well known, tho application of ordin
ary oil paints and distempers is ne
glected. Boston Transcript '
An Immemorial Hair Iyo.
The juice of the walnut rind has been
used from time immemorial as a hair
dye, and Bernschen and Semper have
recently communicated to the Chemical
society of Berlin a simple and practicable
method of preserving it for use, in the
shape of a hydroglucoside, prepared as
follows: -
The rinds of the ripe nut are digested
in sulphuric ether until their "coloring
matter is extracted, a solution of .chro
mic acid in water is then added to the
other solution, and tbe mixture thor
oughly agitated. The ether is now dis
tilled off, and the residue purified by so
lution, first in hot ether, and afterward
in a mixture of chlorof orm and petro
leum ether, from which latter it is ob
tained in a crystalline form as hydro
gen glucoside. It is the substance thus
obtained which is employed for the pur
pose named, its properties enabling it to
color the hair and skin exactly as does
the" juice of the fresh rind. Chicago

varies in different ages and countries
according to the state of society, and
society is influenced and characterized
by the nature and qaality of rejigion.
Now I do not assail an individuals
religion or cteed lor it is of a personal
character hut whn. we are taught that
we are totally depraved we are opt to
wait for a compulsory change or mi

teaching of Christ who said that little
children were of the kingdom of heaven.
The doctrine of vicarious atonement
is to many as they seem to treat it ail
indulgence to live in the present state
in open violation to what they profess
to believe, but if the doctrine be true
it is unavailable to such characters.
However the penalties of permanent
laws are not com mutable. If a man
transgresses a law of his physical na.
ture, the penalty is , according to the
transgression, so with the violation of
a moral law. - "s - " ;
There is little to stimulate joung
men of the church to n.oral excellence .
while it is preached from the pulpit
that a moral man is dangerous in socie
ty, that he is a stumbling ; block to
otuers cic. A man may do moral ana
not be a christian, but can he be a
christian and not be a moral man! many
who profess to be, appear not to be -moral.
The greatest infidelity con
sists in openly violating what one pro
fesses to believe.
The impression to be made is that
every intelligent being becomes account
able for his own violation. . The fact
that person has committed a crime
cannot be erased. Though a man may
reform repentance coupled with refor
mation is good as a barrier against the
repetition of crime, but the penalty
must be paid for the crime committed
as no law can exist without penalty
ior rne violation or it. It a man com
mits willful murder and another man
is executed through misaprehension or
willingly he remains the same guilty
wretch. - ' ' .... -
