    ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1886.
WASUZSOTOX ZETTEB
Washington D. q, Nov. 16th. 1886.
The question of vital interest now
to the Republican Senators is whether
the Nebraska legislature will return
Senator Van Wyck or same ether reli
able brother. During the last session
whenever "crasy horse" Van YVyclr as
he was sometimes called, arose to ask
the consideration of a resolution which
was inimical to any fat corporation, or
went against any old abuse, there was
a good deal of laughing and winking
on the sofas in the rear of the chamber.
In Uko manner Senator Riddlebcrger
always seemed to succeed in making
himself ridiculous. When he insisted
on a hearing in opposition to execu
tive sessions of the Senate, he was in
variably out of order; yet whenever he
made the same point of order on an
other Senator, it so happened that the
point which was good as against him
was not good as against otlrers.
Now it appears that "the stone
which the builders rejected has become
thoheod of the corner." These two Sen.
a tors who were objects of ridicule and ir-
itatiori on to the Republican brothei-
hood, hold the balance of power be
tween the two parties in the Senate.
They were never in harmony with their
party and could never be relied upon
when a vote was called. So, as they
are not Republicans in good and regu
lar standing, tho Senato is not Repub
lican, and there is fun ahead. The
Senate stands thus; 37 Democrats 37
Republicans and the balance of Power
party, composes of Sonators Van Wyck
and Riddlcberger. It is quite certain
these gentleman will be very gracious
ly treated this winter by Republican
Senators although the Philadelphia
Press said it might bo lietter to have
the Senate Democratic than to have it
Republican by the aid of such men.
The suggestion that Mr. Carlisle is
disqualified for the speakership in the
Fiftieth Congress liecauso his oppo
nent will contest his election, is con
3idered pi-acticaliy absurd by such able
and (experienced parliamentarians as
for instance, Congressman Welborn,
of Texas. The further question of the
propriety of his appointing the commit
tee which is to consider his own case is
a reflection that every member in Con
gress would feel like resenting.
Without distinction of party the
Congressmen who have served with
Mr. Carlisle would be perfectly satis-
fill t fnTfif li - Mtlinlf. w-i n f tn
assured that ho would not raise a hand
to save himself from defeat, if by so
doing he would be taking an unfair
advantage of his opponent.
A finer tribute is seldom paid to a
man in public life than the recent ex
pression of interest in Mr. Carlisle's
fortunes, by tho best people of every
partisan faith. The example is all the
more significant from the fact that in
becoming the object of so much un
feigned regard, the Speaker has never
abated one iota of his loyalty to the
Democratic party. ,
The police scandal has been the talk
of the town during the week. It is
alleged that the Chief of Police, in his
cabinet councils which he holds at
nine o'clo;k every day, at his office,
instructed his Lieutenants to "spot"
Congressmen who were inclined to
dark ways in order that they might be
able to influence these Congressmen to
vote for large appropriations for the
Metropolitan Police force. Lieuten
ant Arnold, who is charged with hav
ing strayed the secret, has been sum
moned before a court martial, and
much interest is manifested in the
trial. - It is the most important agita
tion in the police affairs of the District
that has occured since the investijra
tiau made into the iniquities of the de
tectives corps three years ago, and
there is little doubt that justice will
ultimately be done, no matter who is
hurt.
Society gave a little flutter during
thej week to prove that it is not lifeless.
A lunch party giyen by Mrs. Whitney
in honor of Mrs. Cleveland, was char
acterized by that elegance of appoint
ment which has marked all the enter
tainments given at the hospitable home
of the Secretary of the Navy. There
were nineteen young ladies invited
to meet the lady of the White House.
Autumn's own flowers, Chrysan
themums, were used in decorating the
table, and the corsage boquets, which
have been regulated to lunch parties,
were of violets and wero placed at
eyery cover. Thev White House is
very quiet just now, as the President
refuses to see all the callers, and is ab
sorbed in the preparation of his mes
sage to Congress.

My Favorite Receipt.
Some time age the Royal Baking
Powder Co., conceived the idea of col
lecting from its patrons, redistrbntion
among them when printed in book form
their best and favorite methods for the
preparation of articles of food of all de
scriptions. In response there were fur
nished a very large number of practical
receipts, from which were selected the
3000 contained in the book entitled
"My Favorite Receipt." The publica
tion was intended originally for the
contributors only, but the collection
proved to be of such remarkable value
that its publishers believing its circula
tion would be productive of good in
affording a larger knowledge as to the
practical preparation of real home cook
ery in a way to make it most whole
some and appetizing, have issued an
edition for general circulation, which is
sold at cost of production and postage.
"My Favorite Receipt" centains for
mulas for the preparation of almost
every known dish in every conceivable
way. These have been classified into
departments representing Soups and
Broths, Fish and Shell Fish, Vegeta
bles, Meats, Stews, Poultry and Game,
Eggs, Salads, Deserts, Breads, Cake,
Condiments, Beveragos, Ices, Preserves
and Pickles, Preserved Meats, Canned
Vegetables, etc., to which a copious in.
dex is added. Every branch of the
culinary art has received ample atten
tion. The publication is one of unusu
al value, from the fact that the receipts
are thoroughly tested formulas of gen
uine home cookery. In it each con
tributor vouches for the utility of her
receipt not only, but attests that years
of experience have proved it is the
best way of making the article named,
and signs her name and address to it
as an evidence of its genuineness and
her faith in its superiority
The"wactical character of tho re
ceipts will especially commend them
to American housekeepers. While
cookery of the very finest and richest,
as well as that more plain and econom
ical, is provided for, "My Favorite Re
ceipt" is not, like many of the cook
books of the day, a collection of im
practicable, untried, or foreign formu
las, following which frequently results
in a failure and a waste of good mate
rials. The contributions are from
every part of the country and give the
best experience of the best cooks for
preparing the dishes peculiar to each
locality.
"My Favorite Receipt" handsomely
printed and bound,s sent by the Roy
al Baking Powder Co., New York, at
the nominal price of 50 cents, to any
address, express charges paid.
"What kind of a dog is that you
have?" asked the editor, addrossing
the foreman of tho composing room
"I call him a compositor dog," was the
answer; "its a name I invented my
self," said the forman, as he helped
himself, to a cigar from the editor's
box "Why do you apply the name to
him? What resemblance does a dog
bear to a comospitor, or vice versa?1
"Well, the dog is a setter." Then the
editor, with a melancholly look, turned
to complete his articlo on "the lessons
of the great strikes." Ex.
A Chicago man, too lazy to work,
too proud to go to the poorhouse, and
too honest to steal, determined to com
mit some genteel offense, which would
give him free beard and lodging in
prison, without leaving a stain on his
character. He therefore went out
and began kissing all the girls he met.
Before he could find one who would
order his arrest, he starved to death.
It is estimated that in 1784 there
were 420,000,000 pagans in the world
and that these had increased in 1884
to 835,000.000.
There is an intellectual and refined
sensationalism as well a3 a vulgar; sen
sationalism of thought as well as word.
Some seek notoriety through the ec
centricity of their thoughts, others
through their words. Both will have
their reward.
God cannot guide those souls who
never trust him enongh to believe that
he is doing it.
After Queen Victoba became en
gaged to Prince Albert she saw the
Duchess of Gloucester, and told her
see was to make her declaration be
fore the Council the next day. The
Duchess asked her if was not a nervous
thing to do. She said: "Yes; but I
did much more nervous thing a little
while ago." What was that?" "I pro
posed to prince Albert.
"And now let M. Barlholdi make
another Liberty to stand at the Golden
Gate in California. But in place of a
torch she should be represented waving
a Chinaman in air by the slack cf his
copious overalls, preparatory to sling
ing htm at the setting sun." N. Y.
