ROSEBUKG REVIEW
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1886.
Strange CitUenthlp.
"The Muddle in Jackson Co., be
tween Kent and Colvig lias been st
tied; Celvig carrying off tbe cake
lie attorneyship, awarded by Judge
Webster. As this was a contest be
tween two casehardened democrats we
feel a little like the man who watched
the blacksnake and crow fighting did
not care much which whipped." Plain
dealer. -
The above is from" the pen of our
totem. It in a strange conception of
citizenship to be so indifleient as to tbe
rights of different men simply because
they do not belong to the party of
which that paper pretends to be an ex
ponent. "Caschardened democrats"
indeed, Messrs Colvig and Kent are
both gentleman contending for a cer
tain position in which the people in
their section are interested. Judge
Webster decided in favor of Mr. Col
vig, and with the evidence and law be
fore him he reached the above conclu
sion. This was in fact a celebrated case
in some respects, and then for a pub
lie journal to be "like the man that
watched the snake and crow fighting,
and did not care much which whipped, ?
shows a peculiar sort of interest
in public affairs.
A GOOD 8HOMXG.
The state tax levy this year is two
and one twentieth mills on the dollar,
This administration has been an
economical one. While public iui
provements have been made in all di
1 ections, the debts constantly decreased
and for the most part entirely wiped
out, the tax levy has been gradually
lowered, and this burden gradually
. lifted f loni tbe shoulders of the people
The states finances have also been put
on a solid basis, and her credit is as
Round as that of the covernment If
. the same wise policy is pursued in the
future, there is no necessity for the
levy to ever again be raised above the
figure at which it has been placed this
year. That the same general course
may bo pursued is the wish of every
taxpayer. Statesman.
The Angel of the Covenant is the
title of a poem by Mrs. Dr. S. Hamil
ton of this city. The publication is by
The Review of t-is city. The book will
form a volume of about 70 pages of
eight stanzas to the page, neatly print
ed on tinted book paper with brevier
tyre, printed on the Plaidealer power
pres We are not sufficiently endued
with the spirit of poesy to fully appre
ciate, poetical genius; but from a hasty
prusal of a few stanzas at random, the
author seems to have successfully
courted the Muso and came enraport
with rythmic condences in metaphor,
simile and personification, that marks
the author as highly classical; and no
doubt her poem will be read by many
with much interest and profit. Plain
dealer..
. Yesterday's bond call for another ten
millions of the three per cents of 1882
places the Democratic administration
record as having reduced the public
debt over one hundred and seventeen
" millions since it came into power. In
the forthcoming executive message to
congress the president will, it is under
stood, plant himself and his cabinet
squarely on a tariff reduction platform,
The veto of the Morrison surplus reso
lution appears to have been somewhat
Pickwickian New York World.
The Mother Superior of the conventat
Springfield, Mass, is greatly interested
in gaining signatures to the ' World's
Woman's Christian Temperance Union
petition. She has . nearly 1,000 names
of Catholics of that city. Temperance
text-lwoks are to be used hereafter in
the convent of which she has charge.
. . Just the Man,
The most active woi ker, at least,
. and most successful postal inspector
ever on duty in this section is Mr.
George Mason. All recent improve
roents in postal affairs in his line are
due to his efforts. Such appointments
as his are a credit to the administra
tion. Democrat.
At ft meeting of tbe Chicago strikers
Sunday night it was resolved to obsy
powderlj's order and resume work at
the yards Monday morning. Thus the
great strike is finished after two weeks
of conflict The strikers are greatly de
jected at their defeat.
Fred Winkleman, the boy murderer,
died Thutsday at the Oregon Insan
asylum. He had been sentenced to
the penitentiary for life, and it proved
to be a short term.
