ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1886.
newiTT.
Abram S. Hewitt, who was yester
day elected mayor of New York city
is about 64 years of age. He was born
of poor parents at Haverstraw, N. Y
is a graduate of Coltnbia college, to
which he earned a "free scholarship''
by competitive examination with a
number of other candidates from the
common schools. He paid bis own way
through college by teaching; went to
Europe to be treated for some infirm
ity of eyes; was shipwrecked on his re
turn and reached New York at 22
years of age with but $3 in his pocket,
He studied law, but did not practice
long; became acquainted with Peter
Cooper, married his daughter, became
associated with him in business, and is
at the head of . a large iron works which
employs 5000 men. He was elected
to the forty-fourth, forty-fifth, forty-
seventy, forty-eighth and forty-ninth
congresses. He is the ablest champion
of revenue reform in cougress, and
leaves nobody behind him who is his
equal in economic knowledge of all sub
jects that are involved in the discussion
of taiin'and finance. Mr. Hewitt is
an able, honest, sincere thinker, trained
under Peter Cooper to believe that ihe
best friend of the workingman is ha
who helps him to turn his hands to
skilled labor and multiplies his oppor
tunities for the exercise of his skilL
Oregonian.
Elections took place last week as
follows: Arkansas, Virginia, Mary
land, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia,
Rhode Island and Mississippi elect
congressmen. California, Colorado,
Connetinut, Delaware, Kansas, Massa
chusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Ne
braska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New
Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Texas and Wisconcin elect
state officers, legislature and congress
men. Indiana, Iowa, Missouri aud
Ohio elect minor state officers, and
congressmen. Florida elects legisla
ture and congressmen and votes upon
the proposed new constitution of the
state which as framed by the con
vention which met in 1885. North
Carolina elects justices of the supreme
court, legislature and congressmen.
West Virginia elects legislature and
congressmen, Illinois elects minor
state officers, legislature and congress
men, and votes upon a proposed
amendment to the constitution of the
state to abolish the contract system in
the priaans of the state.
SPIItlT or THE VUESS.
The Sunday Welcome sounds the
v slogan for Hewitt and Pennoyer for
1888, which, by the way, is not far off,
Mr. Cleveland. So far as Pennoyer is
coucerned it is worthy of the highest
consideration of Eastern democratic
statesman; for he is recognized as the
foremost .champion of labor on this
Pacific coast and yet beyond any sus
picion of sympathy with anarchists
He could cany Oregon "as easy as
falling off a log," and we believe the
same as to California and Nevada.
His name would ensure three other
wise republican electoral votes and
probably fourteen. Pennoyer's name
would be a tower of strength with the
laboring masses in every state. Pass
it around. Evening Democrat.
" If President Cleveland's policy has
secured us three senators net gain it
has done the country incalculable good
for it will about destroy that great
monopoly stronghold the present re
publican United States Senate. If it
was the arousing of the laboring masses
that did it, all the more credit to the
oipolloL Ex.
The lates news from the elections all
over the United States shows much
more favorable to the Democrats, that
the first -reports which were published
last week.
The tono of a Sunday Oregonian
editorial indicates a relapse to Blaine
istn. That paper is coquettish. Eve
