    ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1886,
THE CAVSE OF STRIKES.
.
Mias 'Rose Elizabeth Cleveland some
time since said in the Literary Life,
that the cause of strikes was owing to
the restlessness of our American peo
ple, and the desire upon the part of j
many to get something for nothing, j
Now this notion is a correct one in
some particulars. But we believe that
the cause of this restlessness, and many
a time, inadequate compensation by
those either in authority, or those pos
sessing much, do not deal properly with
our citizens. To illustrate; Mackey's
new telegraph line is now being con
structed through our county. When
the employes go through a farm, opeu
ing fences, hauling heavy loads, and
otherwise destroying the grass or other
products, and the owner orders them to
cease their trespassing, they either
promise compeasation, and never re
turn to settle the bill, or go ahead tak
ing the chances of prosecution. Now
substantially this thing occurred to
some of our citizens, viz: Jeptha Green
and Burney Dixon, and no doubt many
others. These employes said to Mr,
Green, "Mr. Mackey is worth $300,
000,000, and is a liberal man, and your
land will enhance in value, etc. etc.''
Now we protest sgainst any such doc
trine, that a man because he is rich, or
is about to run a public carrier line,
through a country, is entitled to pass
through private property until he has
paid the damages. Now some will
say that the farmer has recourse to
the courts, so he has, and can collect
damages if any are awarded, but the
time that it takes from his farm, and
the worry and harrassing surroundings
elicited in the prosecution, make men
restless, and at the same time cause a
breach that is not easily cured, in the
confidence that poor men would have
in rich men, if the rich men would
deal in a business like way with the
people. Now for the owner to take a
shot gun and stand in the way, would
involve prosecution. Conclusion, that,
if railroad or telegraph monopolists
take that which does not rightfully be
long to them, by overreaching, intim
idation, or by the' technicalities of law,
they are morally committing grand
larceny, and the only reason they are
not all of them, in the penitentiary, is
because like Mr. Mackey they are
worlh a great deal of monev. The re
sult is, we have Knights of Labor, and
protective union organizations by the
thousand. These are the logical fruits
of restlessness, and this restlessness is
caused by the mistaken policy of the
monopolists. A rich man, has no
right to a poor mans labor or his farm
without compensation, neither has a
laboring man a right to one dollar of
Mr. Mackey's money, until he earns it.
The strikes, therefore often occur on
account of the impolitic way that these
rich companies undertake to do busi
ness.
Hon. B. F. Do well although a Re
publican of the true bine, said to us in
our ofiice last Saturday, "that the
great publicdebt is now virtually paid
off, and that our credit is the best of
all the nations of the earth." - Yes;
and all this under Democratic rule.
Where will the campaign thunder
come from by our friends of the oppo
site party They must take a new
tack now.
Next month, if all goes well, will
witness the dedication of the Bartholdi
statue of "Liberty Enlightening the
World." It is ten years since the
colossus was offered as a gift, and the
great metropolis has not yet been able
to raiso sufficient funds to defray the
expenses of a pedestal and setting up
the statue. New York evidently needs
"enlightenment" as well as the rest of
the world.
The Central Pacific railroad com
pany has concluded to extend its Ore
gon line into eastern Oregon as fa
north as the Columbia river. It is eaid
that the construction of a railroad into
that section will open ud immediately
one of the most inviting, valuable and
fertile areas now remaining in the pub
lic domain.
A Philadelphia paper has the fol
lowing persona;: "Jix-Attorney Uen
eral George II. Williams is now practi
cing law in Portland, Oregon. Years
ago Mr, Williams bought a large tract
of real estate in what was then the
suburbs of Portland. It is now im
proving in value so constantly that its
owner will soon be a wealthy man."
Iv Idaho the Hues are drawn on the
Mormon question as closely as in Utah,
and the present campaign is as bitter
as between Gentile and Mormon in
that priest-ridden Territory. DuBois
leads the Gentiles; Hailey leads the
Jack-Mormons and True Saints. Du
Bois will win the battle.
Armour, the great pork packer of
Clipgago, says that Chicago's superma
cy as a pork packing center will soon be
a thing of the past. He Bays Kansas
City will soon be the great pork city
though Omaha, Minneapolis and other
places will develop the same industry
on a large scale. This moves the Min
neapolis Tribune to say: "Westward
the squealing porker takes his way,"
"Ya-as," -said an Indian citizen,
whose home lies in the fertile valley of
the "Waybosh." "I happened to be in
Charlcstown when the first earthquake
cum." "What did you do when you
heard the rumbling?" "I tuk thirty
grains of quinine b'gosh!" New York
Sun.
SEEDED RAILROADS.
It is a fact that while Coos Bay is
the best outlet for the largest half of
Oregon, and particularly the Southern
part, every other is to be canvassed
and examined as to its advantages for
terminal purposes, in a railroad point
of view, first. Just why this is thus,
we shall not attempt to explain, but
that some are not posted as to their
best interests all will admit. Coos
bay is the best harbor on the Oregon
coast to-day, and the pass through
the Coast Range to it is not equaled by
that of any other, while it can be
reached on a direct line from the cen
ter of the state. A road is to be run
from one end of the state to the other
through Eastern Oregon. An outlet
to the coast at the nearest point from
the center may bring Coos Bay into no"
tice. Such a connection would be an
absolute necessity since roads are virt
ually allowed as much for a short as
for a long haul. In reference to the
proposed road through Eastern Oregon,
a San Francisco dispatch says: The
California & Oregon railroad is being
pushed northward quite vigorously,
and will cross Klamath river at Scott's
Bar. From that point surveys have
been made for a road to be constructed
up the valley of Klamath, passing be
tween the upper and lower Klamath
lakes, in the vicinity of Linkville,
and penetrate Eastern Oregon. It is
very probable the road will not soon
form a Portland connection, as the
company intend to tap the lesources
of Eastern Oregon at the earliest date
possible. The company has decided on
this course owing to the high opinion
entertained here of that region. The
apers here designate the land of East
tern Oregon as ranking among the
richest. The California railroad com
pany is satisfied the resources are am
pie to sustain the road, and predict a
rapid settling up. The merchants here
claim that San Francisco is the com
mevcial basis and outlet of that region
and hail the news with jay. Coquille
City Herald.
SEIJtIT OF THE FRESH.
The Evening Democrat published at
Portland Oregon speaks thus compli
mentary of the spiiit of the Oregonian,
and also makes its own comments, al
of which The Review regards as prop
er and right.
The Oregonian treats this morning
of the smaller wages paid women than
those paid to men for the same work
and attributes it to the intense compe
tition among women nsulting from the
modern enlargement of their sphere of
labor.
It also tieats of the mines of the
Northwest and promises an elaborate
review of them from the pen of Mr.
Herbeit Lang. That paper never does
anything half way and we may expect
a most interesting article.
It also treats of f'The Russia!
Jews" in relation to "Anarchists" and
in reply to a contributor makes a hand
some explanation of a previous article.
It concludes very justly in a tribute
to the J ewish race which we take great
pleasure in transferring to our col
umns:
"Our correspondent does himself in
justice and the Oregonian injustice,
when he assumes that, we are so ignor
ant or so unjust as to attempt to re.
point vulgar prejudice and bigotry in
America by direct or indirect deprecia
tion of one of the most vital and intel
lectual races of the world; a race that
in war, politics, finance, law, music,
the stage, philosophy and philanthropy
commands the admiration of the intel
ligent world. The Oregonian knows
that the Jews need not take a back
seat for brains, so long as the world
remembers Spinoza, Rothschild, Monte
fiore, Jessels, Disraeli, Fould, Heine,
Meyerbeer, Mendelsohn, Rachael,
Bernhardt, Braham, Auerbach and
Massena."
These are the sentiments we have
always been taught Outside of Eng
land there is no country in the world
that has yielded that just mead to this
race so much as the Southern states of
America. The names of Yulee and
Benjamin are heusehold words it that
section.

The approaching legislature will be
one of interest no doubt. No U. S.

Hon. Binger Hermann, Oregon's
faithful congressman, came up on Sat'
urday evening's express and spent the
Sabbath in this citv. He was cordially
welcomed and most graciously received
by the citizens here in recognition of
his valuable services in behalf of the
state at Washington. He left on the
Albany express Monday morning for
the capital city, and will return to his
labors in Washington in two or three
weeks. Albany Bulletin.
The other day the "writer said to a
poor, illiterate Christian: "You are a
very good man." . The reply ho made
-so simple, so earnest-would make
many a more favored Christian blush:
"I, first of all, try to be a good man
in ihe sight of God, and then in the
sight of mail."
