The j cream of tartar of the market from which

"What oaths mast be taken ia the
endowment-housef ' ,
"Well, there is first tho oath of the
Aaronic or lesser priesthood. The can
didates must swear to obey implicitly
the laws of the Mormon church and
all it enjoins in preference to those of
the TJniced States. The penalty for
breaking this oath is to have your
throat cut from ear to ear and the ton
gue torn out by its roots. After tak
ing this oath the candidate is made to
V7
draw bis hand across the throat as
reminder of what may be expected in
case of its violation. There is a grip
which is made known to those who
take the oath. It consists in placin
tho thumb on the index-finger and
lasping the hand around.
"The second oath is the second - de
gree of the Aarenio or lesser priest
hood. This is the oath of chastity.
The woman is to have but one husband,
but the man can take as many wires
as he wants, and the more wives he
takes the better Mormon he i?, and the
greater will be his reward hereafter.
"The grip of the oath f 'chastity'
consists in placing the thumb between
the knuckles of the index and second
fingers and clasping the hand around.
The penalty for breaking this oath is
to have the body sawn asunder and
then thrown into the sea. The candi
date is required, after taking the cath,
to draw the hand sharply across the
middle of the body.
Then there is the first grip of the Mel
chisedec, or higher order of the priest
hood, of which the order hold that
Christ was a member. Those who en
ter this order are made to swear to
avenge the deaths of Joseph Smith,
the martyr, and his brother Hiram, on
the American nation' and to teach
their children and their children's
children to do the same.
"The grip consists in placing the
thumb on the knucklo of the index
finger, the latter being placed straight
along the palm of the hand, while the
lower part is clasped by the other fin
gers. The penalty for breaking This
oath is not a very slight one-it is dis-
embowelment
There is one more order, the high
est order of Melchisedec. Whoever
enters that order must swear absolute
obedience to the Mormon priesthood.
In giving the grip of this order the
hands of the two persona clasp, each
other with the end of tbe index finger
resting on the wrist and the little fingers
closely locked together. The place on
the wrist where the index finger rests
is supposed to correspond with the
place the nails pierced when Christ
was crucified, but as the nails tore out
at first and the Savior had to be again
fastened to tho cross you place your
second finger beside the index finger
on the wrist. This is called the sure
sign of the nail.
"These are the oaths that all who go
through the endowment house must
take. To lie for the church is consid
eied, in the Mormon religion, not to be
a sin; on the contrary, something to be
highly commended." N. Y. Morning
Journal.
Tho Wcs t Shore for October contains
a series of - magnibcrnt engravings,
illustrating the varied features of Port
land's Chinese quarter. In all the ef
forts of the various periodicals of the
United States to illustrate the Chinese
and their peculiaities, nothing has ever
been produced that can compare with
these, the engravings comprise interior
scenes in a resturant, theater, gambling
house, opium den, etc., and several ex
terior views, including a Chinese funer
al. They are executed in three colors
and are works of art An interestine
article, descriptive of the Chinese as we
see them here, accompanies the sketch
es. The number also contains an arti
cle on Mt. Adame, illustrated with a se
ries of sketches illustrations of the State
Fair recently held in Salem, and the
new toll route across the Cascades from
articles of interest and merit complete
the number, the whole forming the
most attractive and entertaining one yet
issued. The publisher offers to send the
remaining numbers for 1886 free to
those who subscribe now for 1887, this
will include a large engraving of Mt
Hood, in eight colors, to be isued with
the holiday number. Sudscriptions re

The following from an exchange is
said to be the prayer of Jay Gould:
Our father, who art in England, Roth
childs be thy name; thy finances ' in
America; thy will be done in the Uni
ted States as it is in England. Give
us this day our bonds in gold, but no
silver; give us plenty of laboring men's
votes to keep the monopolists in power
and their friends in office. We know
our father we have done many wrong
things, we know it is wrong to refund
the bonds and make them payable in
coin; we know it was wrong to demon
etize silver; we know it is wrong to
water our railroad stocks, but thcu
knowest we are above politics. It is
the same to us whether the Democrats
or Republicans rule, for thou knowest
we are able to sway political jobs in
our favor. Lead U3 not into tho way
of strikers, but , deliver us from the
hands of the insane Knights of Labor.
Thus shall we have the kingdom, bonds
luterest, power and gold till the repub
lic shall end. Amen. i :

Since the announcement that the
California and Oregon intended to
push a line tnrough Eastern Oregon
people in the valley have been quite
uneasy, fearing that there would be na
connection made with the O. fc C. road
at Ashland. Such fears are groundless.
The line of the road is too important
to .be abandoned. A San Francisco
dispatch under date of Oct. 13th, sajs:'
Notwithstanding many assertions as
to a change of route of the California
& Oregon, that road will be pushed as
rapidly as possiblo through Northern
California, to connect with the Oregon
& California at Ashland. The road
which is contemplated to build into
Eastern Oregon will be a branch of the
California Si Oregon, and will be un
dertaken after the main line ia com
pleted. No authoritative surveys
have yet been made of the conntry,
and a Southern Pacific agent leaves at
the end of the week to report upon
the feasibility of the proposed road.
This coiToberates the published state
ment of the Momtarun its last issue.
The Californians are reaching out for
the trade of the northwest, and the
proposed branch to Eastsrn Oregon is
only a link in the chain of what will
ere long become a network of roads all
centering in San Francisco. Medford

Aji illicit distillery has been found
in operation in tho county jail at At
lanta, Ga., which has been worked
successfully for several months. An
attempted escape led to the investiga
tion which developed the existence of
the still. One of the prisoners' is
Smith, the Heard county murderer,
who had in his" cell a small stove and
kettle. He had been an illicit distiller
in his day, and his first work on enter
ing jail was to improvise a worm and
still. Gathering the different articles
at different times, the worm was made
out of an India rubber tube. The
prisoners in his cell would save up
their bread until a sufficient quantity
was obtained, when the stiller would
make a fair article of com whiskey.
The secret was well kept by the pris
oners who were thus enabled to get
their dram occasionally. Some people
display wondeiful ingenuity for devil

greedy of sin and avaracious of penalty.
