THE SOLDIER AT MOUXT OLIVET.
. Nashville American.
The prayer is said, the dirge is sung
With tearful eye and faltering tongue.
The mighty throng has passed and gone.
And midnight's starry pall is drawn , - v
Above the dear, lamented dead
Who rests in consecrated bed
Cold, dust and ashes are the end
Of dauntless chief and noble friend,
And Olivet now holds In trust -The
gallant Cheatham's silent dust.
Dust only? No; the flame which fired
His heart with chivalry inspired
And iitade it beat with wild delight
In many'a deathful, deathless, light,
When with his Hashing saber drawn,
He called his ardent legions on,
The strength and pride of Tennessee, ? .
The brave, the manly, strong and free, :
Is glowing, flashing, lmrning yet
Thou canst not quench it. Olivet! - ?
When cjvil .discord waved its Jbrandj
AaJik Jinsi6u i:eni Uje- Jami, --'-"r5
His loving, strong," heroic soul
Was true as needle to the pole; .
True, ever true as friend or foe,
In war he struck a giant's blow,
Then grasped the vanquished by the hand
And bade him as a brother stand ; ,
Nor friend nor foe can e're forget
His lofty soul Mount Olivet!
O marvel not the ioeman weeps
Above the turf where Cheatham sleeps!
For honor, valor, gentle worth
Sink not unnoticed to the earth.
Behold them! Like a jeweled hand
They show, as by divine command,
The blood-washed host who dwell above,
Saved by the Master's mighty love!
O Christ, whose agonizing prayer
Once rent Mount Olive's midnight air,
Pardon each stain of mortal sin
And take the ramsoned warrior in,
As with hot tears his dust we wet
With bleeding hearts at Olivet.

taken in 1852. On an opposite wall
is a picture in colors of the old pioneer
home of the Garfield family, painted
by Mrs. Garfield. But the ereat relic
of the room is the last letter of the
son te his mother of which so many
fac-siniile copies are sold. Here is the "
original, soiled with tears and frequent
reading. It has been framed and

it morn and eve, as if it were part of
her devotions .

Dear 3fother: Do not be disturbed

It is true I am still weak, but am
gaining every day, and need only time
and patience to bring me through.

Some are by Mrs. Garfield, who spends
her spare hours among her husband's
books and papers or in her studio with
hor brash and palette. Bat the one
great idea is Garfield the father, Gar
field the statesman. Pictures and
busts of him are everywhere. On the
stairway leading to the library is an
oil portrait of him made in 1862, when
he came from - the war. Above it
hang fiis swords. The library is the
refuge room. It is in the upper story
of the new part and an ideal spot for
rest or literary labor. There are thou
sands of volumes here arranged for con
venience. The tables are loaded with
art books and magazines. Where
there are walls above the books, pict
ures of authors with autographs at
tached are hung. The- autographic
portraits of Bismark and Gambetta oc
cupy prominent places.
With Mrs. Garfield live her
father, Mr. Budolpb, a brother and
his family, and also the two Misses
Mason, of Cleveland, whose mother
and sister are now in Europe. There
are sixteen in family, and five servants.
A half-dozen men are employed on the
farm, which consists of 200 acres. It
is paying, although nothing is sold
frem it bat beef cattle.
Mrs. Garfield is only thirty miles
from Cleveland, and often visits the
city. Her husband's tomb in Lake
View cemetery is Hearing completion.
