FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 1886.
J yVT TO CRACK.
The Yoice, (prohibition,), in an ar
ticle entitled "Why we Can't Trust the
Republican Party," says:
We have been told, that we hive no
right to say that war can,t trust the
promises of the Republican party on ,
matters. We have the right to say it, j
and we repeat it. The declarations of
Republican platforms cannot be trusted
We can't give all our reasons for this.
We might show that in such states !
as New York, Pennsylvania and Mass-j
achusetts, where thj liquor power ys
strong. The .Republican party has
shamelessly broken its public pledges
and professions. ( Rut we want to let
those states alone at present, and show
that even in states where the public
sentiment has pronounced itself unmis
takably in favor of prohibitory laws,
ani has incorporated them, either on
the statute books or in the constitution,
the Republican party has been and is
betraying those lawa Look, for in

on one block. And then remember
that New Hamshire is a prohibition
state and has been for thirty years;
that it is and has always been a Re-

in which those saloons exist is a Re
publican city, with Republican officials
to enforce the laws. Remember this
is but a sample of the state, and that
the number of federal "permits" to sell
' liquor issued last year was 1169, hav
ing increased to that number from 7 47
in 1880. The saloons on that diagram
are not secret drinking places as in
Maine. They are as open as in New
York city, and boldly advertise them

please crack the nut above from The

indicate your competency on this line.
Since Smith has been nominated by
the Democrats the Republicans are
looking about for a more available
candidate for delegate in congress than
old Moss-back, Colonel Sellers Bean.
It is no use the Democrats have
everything their own way in Arizona.

Henry George, the famous eastern
socialist, has been, nominated by a
large convention for mayor of New
York city. It is estimated that he
will receive from 15,000 to 20,000
votes.
A Disgrace.
We second the following motion with
both hands up, and on tip toe; from
the Albany Democrat, and would add,
that no man from a business standpoint
is considered reliable who perpetually
disgraces himself by drunkenness and
debauchery. Sedgwick is therefore a
disgrace to the nation, as well as to the
party appointing him. Sober men we
will hare and none others, to represent
us anywhere.
. .If the statements about Sedgwick
being drunk and disgiacing our tovern
ment are true Secretary Bayard should
recall him at once. If the Secretary
can not find a sober decent man for the
; place among his friends let him resign
so that the President can appoint a
new Secretary who Has sober friends.
Since tlw late raid upon them the
Crow Indiana are branding all of their
horses.

The receipts of the state fair were

the state treasury, gives the society

of the fair were 12,000, so it will be
seen that a handsome surplus remains
to be applied to the debt of the society.
The gate receipts when figured up fell
far short of expectations and do not
correspond relatively with receipts
from other sources. Officers of the so
