    ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 7, 1886.
THE r. S. SEX ATE.
Says the "World, a prominent mem
ber of the National Democratic Con
gressional Committee in forecasting
the probable result of the election on
the United States Senate after March
4, next, gives the following opinion:
'The republicans now hare, including
the uewJy-elected Senator from Cali
fornia and . Riddleberger, forty-two
senators; the democrats, (hiijjy-four.
Twenty-five senators go out on March
3, 1887. Of these, sixtejnare repub
licans aud nine democrats. Of the
nine democrats ' whose terms expire
there have been already elected, or
certain to be elected, seven, from the
states of Deleware, Florida, Maryland,
Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and
Texas. W "e nearly sure of electing
one from West Virginia. This leaves
-unlv one of nine to be elected, namely.
from Nevada, which is likely to go Re
publican, I am afraid. Of the sixteen
senators to be elected in place of Re
publicans whose terms expire in 1887
thoy are certain to get eight from
Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Ne
braska, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
Vermont and Wisconsin, That leaves
in my calculation, seven doubtful Re
publican seats, from California, Con
necticut, Indiana, Michigan, New Jer
Ber, Nev. York and Ohio. We havo
already elected a democrat from Vir
ginia to succeed .Mahone. So you sec
wo have a fair show to carry the next
senate. 'If we bold our present repre
sentation together, with the gain o!
one from Virginia, we will only have
to carry three of the doubtful seven to
make a tie. It is close, but hopeful."
1'leld Ear Enterprise.
The following from the Oregouian
exhibits the possibilities of our section
of country if we would just open our
eyes to the situation and make an
effort to come and invest in a railroad
enterprise from Roseburg to Coos Bay,
ihe Uregon .racinc railroad company
has m operation seventy-two miles
road between Corvallis and Yaquina
Bay. It is standard guage and of ex
pensive construction, ana its course
lies through a country only Bparscly
settled. And yet, we are told, that
during the past year it has paid not
only all expenses of operation but a
sufficient interest on the capital in
vested. In this fact lies a demonstra
tion of very great importance to the
country, If the road to Yaquina bay
pays, so will roads to Coos bay, down
the Umpqua valley, down the Coquille
liver, and into Tillamook bay. It is
not necessary that such roads be of
standard gauge. Narrow gauge roads
costing much less to build, would serve
these cost districts equally well, and
if discreetly managed would yield
handsome returns from the beginning.
Light narrow gauge roads might be
built through twenty districts in this
state with the result of yielding fine
profits and of developing the country.
There could not be a finer field for en
terprise in rail road making in Oregon
at this time."
The Salem Statesman, republican,
speaking of the appointment of Mr,
Woodson T. Slater as Mr. Webb's dep
uty, says: "The writer of this was a
schoolmate of Mr. Slater, and, barring
the complexion of his political opinions,
we can attest' to Woodson's honesty
and efficiency. He is 'stiaight as a
string,' and a good, honest, straightfor
ward gentleman, 'plain as an old shoe,'
and the people of tho state are to to be
congratulated upon Mr. Webb's selec
tion.! If in the course of his official
actions, he commits no greater blunder
than: ililu, tho majority of the people
will be satisfied with Mr. Webb's end
of the administration."
It was a sad day for Gen. Logan
when he consented to become the de
fender of the Boat of Mr. Henry B.
Payne in the senate from Ohio. This
action did much to neutralize a con
siderable career in stalwarfcism on his
part There are many to mourn for
Logan because of this lapse; but, when
it comes to talk of the presidency,
the general sentiment of the wostis re
ported to be that he can never more be
a candidate of mine. Boston Herald.
Ma. Blaise is wrong in his statement
that the tariff issue forms a "distinct
and well-marked line of divison be
tween the Republican and Democratic
parties". ' Not at all 1 , There are tens
of thousands of . Republicans quite as
sincere and devoted as Mr. BUin who
doubt or deny the policy of protection.
'Times,.:. -
The Maine election last Monday
went Republican. The Democrats
gained fiYc State Senators and sever
al Representatives. The Republican
loss in the State is 4,468 votes. The
Democrats gain all around The Pro

expected .
