    ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1886.
A QuArtette of Church Singer.
It docs not always result pleasantly to
look into the individuality of those who
are doing something in church. That w as
what I thought at St. Paul's after I had
foolishly sought a place from which I could
discover who was in the quartette of sing
ers. Trinity keeps a large corps of vocal
ists to sing in the nine houses of worship
which the parish maintains in different
sections of the city, and assignments of
voices are made to suit the varying re
quirements. On this occasion the result
was musically excellent. The clear sweet
ness of the soprano, the soft melody of the
tenor, the strength of the alto, and the
deep rumble of the bass were remarkably
well balanced and blended. When I saw
from a distance that a shapely young man
and girl were the central pair, I said to
myself how fitting it was that they should
emit tenor and soprano sounds, while the
ungentle alto and the gutteral bass were
respectively voiced by a middle-aged, ugly
woman and a still less presentable fat man.
But on close observation I discovered
that things were deceptively reversed.
Contrary to usage the tenor and the so
prano were at the ends of the row, and
they were none other , than the plain
matron and the soggy man, while the alto,
with a tone like a virago, was the dainty
girl, and the bass roar of a hoarse bandit
came from as neat a dandy as could be
imagined. Now, an artistic point was
gained by placing the quartette in that un
common manner. Gow, an artistic point
was gained by placing the quartette in
that uncommon manner; but what of the
deep, dark plot of outright deception prac

A Unique Newspaper Industry.
A Washington street newsdealer asked
me the other day: bWhat use do you sup
pose a man in Chicago would have for
3,500 country papers, daily, weekly and
allf" I gave the conundrum up, and he
continned: "I was just as puzzled as you
until I f and out. A year or two ago an
acquaintance of mine in a certain line of
business contracting subscribed for
fifty or sixty Illinois weeklies and dailies.
From these he kept posted and was able
to dispatch an agent to the scene and get
in ahead of his competitors. A neighbor
in another line bridge-building got on
to the scheme and offered my friend a
specified sum to keep him posted as to the
transaction of county boards, the inten
tions of railroads, etc. Other people found
that they could obtain desired informa
tion better by this means than by any
other, and before my friend had realized
how the business was growing he found
1,000 papers on his subscription list and
half a dozen girls in his employ cutting out
the items. And still it grew, until his list
now comprises 3,500 papers and he employs
fifteen clerks. Among other services he
acts as '-change editor for one of the
blanket-sheet dailies. His income from
this queer business is about 13,500. He is
full of original ideas, and is always branch
ing out into something new, but that is
certainly a unique industry." Chicago

Vinegar In Diarrhoea and Dysentery. 1
Dr. Amos Sawyer has the following sen
sible communication in The St. Louis
Medical and Surgical Journal: "About a
quarter oi a century ago.when giving
some good advice for a young practitioner
to follow, the late Dr. B. F. Edwards, of
St. Louis, Mo., whose action In the meas
urement of the action of remedies, truth j
in the statement, and justice towards
members of the profession, made him a
shining light in the early history of our !
state, among other things says: Never i
make fun of an old woman's remedy, for
not only will you give offense and thereby
injure your practice to the extent of her
influence, but you may throw away what 1
would have proved upon trial, a valuable
adjunct in your practice? He then cited
this case to illustrate the importance !
of his Injunction: In 1839, while practic
ing in Madison county, Illinois, I was '
induced by representations of an old!
womar to make the trial, in dysentery and
diarrhoea, of a table spoonful dose of pure
cider vinegar, with the addition of suffi
cient salt to be noticeable, and it acted so
charmingly that I never usad anything
else.' He was prescribing it in 1870, mak
ing it a period of forty years." Medical

Trusting Mexican Convicts on Parole.
- In the Mexican city of Zacatecas they
, have monthly auctions for the queer pur
pose of disposing of superfluous state con
victs. . The shops of the Acordata, or city
prison, can employ a limited number of
skilled pri tiers; the surplus, often in
innludlng ruffians of the Vilest description,
are intrusted to the highest bidder, some
responsible capitalist who agrees to an
swer for the safety of his bondsmen, and
can employ them in any way promising to
recoup his investment. The convict may
be rabid with thirst for revenge against
his informers and judges, but if he is a
half Spaniard the idea of being trusted on
parole is generally enough to insure his
I tolerably good behavior. Desperadoes who
would risk their lives to break out of a
public man-cage will hesitate to abuse the
confidence of a private citizen who has
given bonds for their honorable conduct,

I How Stupid It Would Be. .
A man has no idea of the quantity of
happiness in the world until he has gone
through all of our parks on a calm moon
light night. Hugging seems to be as
natural in people as original sin and just
as pleasant, and when you see a woman's
j head resting on a man's shoulder, the
whole value of the human configuration is
explained. Stop for a moment and think
how stupid it would be if a man were all
up and down straight, or if his shoulders
were sharp-edged, or his head square.

An Italian professor wishing to find out
whether the miasm of malaria existed in

self by having infusions of dew and soil

under his skin. He experienced no evil
results. He and his friends made fifty-two
similar experiments without harm. Bos
