    ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1886.
A.COAST BJ.XLUOAD.
Whit do Eoseburgers think of this.
Better wake up.
"The citizens of this place met pur
suant to call, Saturday last to discuss
the project of taking preliminary steps
toward building a railroad from this
place to the coast. Messrs. Henry
Beckley and 0. G. H'enderer of Elk
ton were also present and letters were
read from Mess. Heddcn. Palmei and
Ozouf, of Scottsburg, and Mr. A. W.
Reed, of Gardiner. These gentlemen
all spoke encouragingly of the. plan
and promised their aid to the scheme.
31 r. IL L. Shelly addressed the meet
ing at length setting forth the advan
tages of a road over this route. His
remarks .were well received and ap
plaudcd. Speeches were made by
others present, when it was decided
to circulate a subscription paper asking
for aid. The business men and lead
ing citizens of the place subsciibed,
liberally and offered much encourage
ment. ;
A preliminary survey will at once
Le made and also a profile oftbo route.
A corporation will be organized under
the laws of the State and the matter
will be pushed with all possible vigor'

The question is constantly beinj
asked, "why Uoos Uay gets a less ap
propriation than Yaquina Bay!" The
answer is easy and plain". Every cap
italists interested in Yaquina is faith
fully working for that place. Every
winter it has a strong lobby in Wash
iugton working for the interest of said
bay, while Coos Bay is not only doing
nothing affirmatively, but its capitalist
are actnally opposing appropriations
and a lobbyist sent from here would
not onlv uot be seconded in his efforts,
but no opportunity would be lost to
block him, by parties who should
work in the interest of the bay, as the
Yanuina folks do in the interests o!
that place. Coos Bay News.

C. A. Cole has retired from the
Corvallis Gazette. We think Mr
Uole s "explanation does him an in
justice, or else he is possessed with re
publican rabies. Mr. Cole's attacks' uj
on Messers Strahan and Cauthorn
were far-fetched and were gratuitous
even as a Republican iournal. These
men we know, and Mr. Cole is certain
ly not their superior. Douglas county
got a good sljare of the offices from
a Democratic stand point, and its pa
pers of all parties did not feel called
upon to say hard things of the opposite
candidates simply because they were
"Republican or Democratic.
The G. A. R. at Sari Bernardino was
wined and dined, and each vet. had
bottle of pure California wine to take
home with him, as a remembrance of
his visit; according to the Coltou Semi
Tropic, but the cranks were there, and
made an attempt to destroy the wine
provided for the entertainment. What
a pity it could not have all have been
destroyed in the whole State before
they came. It is only to our shame,
not to our glory that we make men
drunk and arouse appetites that were
slumbering, thus entailing lifo-long
misery upon the tempted who have
fallen in our net Censor.
Brig, and Brvt major general W. B.
llazon U. S. A. chief of the signal ser
vice is now on this coast, inspecting
the signal service officers. He may
visit the office here before leaving the
coast In the early days the general,
then Lieut Hazen, -was stationed in
this region, and many of the pioneer?

foremost soldiers of the present day, on
his visit to our city.
Seven anarchists have been found
guilty of murder in Chicago with the
penalty of death. The trial has been
one that has interested the civilized
world, and there is universal commenda
tion of a verdict that warns the turbu
lent and riotous that America is not
the country where indiscriminate mur
der can be safely indulged.
Two brothers named Taylor are run
ning against each other for the govern
orship of Tennessee, one as a Democrat
the other as a Republican. And now
it is said the prohibitionists will nomi
nate the father of the two candidates
for the same office. "
It was a happy thought in TiUlen
when he made provision for his own
monument. His long residence in
New York disgusted him with the
plate passers and slow-going monu

weth's reply to "Democrat," he accuses
mc of "wilful falsifying," in what re
spect 1 know not. . At all eyents I
hardly think this accusation made in
such a spirit of bravado, will have
much weight amongst those wlro know
me best and longest Mr. Chenoweth
cannot deny distributing prohibition
tickets on election day, and if I stated
that "he used the post office for elec
tioneering purposes," instead of saying
that "he then being postmaster at Oak-
and did electioneer for the third par
ty" it simply amounts to one and the
le thing, and I scarcely think the
offense is to be condoned simply be
cause it was committed oalaide instead
of inside the post-office. 'Whether I
have been guilty of wilful falsifying I
eave to your readers.
