ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, JULY, 30, 188G.
Foley Smiixgh, July 22nd, 1856.
, Editor Review: Thinking you
would bo pleased to bear from your in
valid friends who left Roseburg for the
Folev Ilct Snrinsrs on July 14th, I
write yoi of our trip and Ac. We stayed
over night at Eugene City, met severa
ffiAnla T iiva Will id nrAa 1MA 1ru"kHt
after a will case. There aro evidences
of thrift and growth on every hand in
this fair city, no doubt it is One of the
best towns outside of Portland. The
next, morning at o a. m. weiemnisiown
on the stage running from Eugene City
to the springs, weekly. The road runs
tip the McKenzie river through a small
pretty valley, varying from a quarter
to two miles in ' width, the stage ride
would have been pleasant if the road
had not been so dusty, and If we had
not been in a blazing sun. The Col. at
times, because gloomy perhaps, on ac
count of thoughts of the "loved ones"
on the other Bide of the Rockies at
least I attributed it to that and to
' cheer him up I expatiated, upon the
medicinal qualities of the water of Fo
ley Springs, which would bring him
back to his natural self again, and then
his wit would sparkle as of yore. At
niijlit we stopped at Pepiots where we
enjoyed a good meal such as all hungry
people relish. After a nights sweet
sleep, "nature's health restorer," we
breakfasted at early morn and then
started on our way with high anticipa
tions of the good time in store for .us.
Between Eugene and Pepiots there are
ruany good farms well tilled, between
Pepiots and the Springs the valley be
comes narrower; widens out and nar'
rows, in successively. The' bottoms
along the river are usually covered with
rtrxivtr t.niitioT anil rloriRP uncial' rirn&ti
and now and then we came to a clear
ing where the settler has ,put up a rude
house for a home for those that he loves
"chill penury and squalid want" will
: not repress their noble ambition. How
much better to do that than stay in
crowded cities without a ray of hope
of bottering tbeir condition. It takes
courage to'scttlc on timbered lands as
will and muscle are required to cicar
the land for the plow and sickle, but
when once cleared it id more produc
. tive, usually, than prairie land. At
one point on tbe road to the east in the
Cascade range, can be seen the Three
Sisters rearing their tall heads to the
skies, robed in eternal whiteness, keep
ing their silent vigils to the valleys be
low, it is a scene rare, grand am
uicturesaue and not soon to be fonrot
ten. The mountains now become more
nhrnnt and run down to the river
. banks in places. At 1 p. h. we reached
Powers at the bridge across the Mc
Kinzie where vre set down to as good a
' dinner as one could wish. Mrs. Pow-
. ers is an estimable lady and knows how
to -please her guests. We were in
formed that three ladies were boarding
there, a grass widow, an artist and a
school marm, and that there were no
lady boarders at the Springs. Wei
says my companion in his characteristic
way, "less board here and walk up to
the Springs and back every' day."' It
is ever thus! At 2 p. M. we left Pow
era for the Springs, after crossing the
river we leave the main road that runs
over the mountain Into eastern Oregon
and a ride of five miles through heavy
timber up a gradual ascent takes us to
the famous Foley Springs, having com
pleted the stage ride of sixty miles.
The Springs are quite conveniently
situated and are. owned by P. Runey
Pir, maple and cedar is the principal
timber around here. The hot water
comes out of apertures in the solicT rock
. in four places, and is conveyed to the
bath rooms in wooden troughs. The
, water is 188 degrees in heat. One can
drink the water hotter than ordinary
hot water can be drank for a reason
unknown to the writer. The discliar;
of water is constant and would fill
a five inch pipe. The water is taste
less except the first swallow or two
and then only can the mineral be
tasted the mote we think it, the
more we want it must be good for
several diseases especially rheumatism.
The guests at the Springs are Col.
LFlcischncr, Judgo. Page, Sam Low
enstein, H. W. William, W. L. Light
ner, Mark Wilzinski of Portland, Ex
Gov. S. F. Chadwick of Salem, Abrams
of Lincoln, Henry Owens of Eugene
City, Col J. C. Fullertoii and G. W.
Kimball of Roseburg. They are the
healthiest lot' of looking invalids we
have ever seen and the way they get
outside of edibles is astonishing. We
have not exprienced any great change
in our physical condition other than
languor. Those who are here with
- rheumatism, who have been to the cel
ebrated Hot Springs of Arkansas,
claim that the water of these Springs
is equal to the former. We pass the
time away fishing, reading and talking
over old times. The streams abound
in fine trout. The other day Col.
brought in a fine string of thirty four
speckled beauties, owing to an ecei
dent I have brought in twenty -one only
at. one time. I shall make one more
attempt to beat our friend," . The Col
still wants me to go with him to the j
bridge where the attraction is hereto-j
. fore referred to, but I keep putting him
off with the excuse (hat J am not able 1
go to on account of
a fall I got while
fishing, but ho is anxious to go and I
look for him to at anytime. Now don't
let Mrs. F know anything about it?
Tbe weather has been very warm here,
the thermometer marking 98 degrees
in the shad, but yesterday there was
a heavy thunder shower which cooled
the atme&phcre, and to day it is pleas
ant. It is amusing to hear the old
chronics dilate upon their peculiar ail
ments one who has the rhematism in
the finger which is now quite limber
from the use of the water, at times
imagines that he is Jack Dempsey and
squares off for a sette, but he caa find
no one pugilistically inclined others
have it in the ankle, leg or shoulder.
One thought he was a runner and tried
his speed against a local colored racer
of Portland, but he only run about
fifteen feet until he was suddenly
seized with a cramp which has laid
him up for additional repairs." Our
only amusement so far has been a foot
race between a local colored runner of
Portland and a white locsl runner of
Eugene, which resulted in the defeat
of the latter, but Saturday is the
great race for a "purse of 3, and I
think the country will get a way with
Portland. As our catarrh has disap
peared like mist of eve before a J uly
morning sun we shall start home next
Monday well pleased with our trip
and eojouru here. Wish you Hon. L.
'. Lane and the rest of the boys were
with us in this mountain retreat, du
rin the hot wave.
Yours till death,
K.

the Holy Oho.il -
Cincinnati. July 18. Information
was gleaned to-day that a party of t-liir
ty or fortypeople, most of thein prom
inent iu society and above the average
in intelligence, believe that Mrs. John
B. Martin, of Walnut Hills, is Christ
manifest in the flesh, and her sister
Mrs. John F. Brooks is the Holy
Ghost. The followers of these two
women meet at Mrs, Biook's house
and worship the in both. Mrs. Martin
has exerted some influence that has
put them completely in her power and
they are fanatic on the subject.
One of the woman's followers is
named Jerome. He was bookkeeper
for the Cincinnati agency of D. Apple
ton Si Co., the New York publishers.
He gave up bis position, with 1,800
a year, to serve her. To a reporter
who Jerome saw this morning he said
"I have seen God face to face iu the kit
halt hour." '
A young man named Cook, who
works in the Auditor's office of Adams'
Express, resigned his position and has
attached himself to the new sect.
This movement has been going on
quietly for a year without becoming
generally known. The women seclude
themselves and will not be seen by
any odc who is not a worshiper or
vouched for by one of them. Many
persons have sold their homes and
taken houses near where the women
live on the hill. Those who have not
given up their positions say they do
not need work or money, all they need
is spiritual food, and this will be fur
nished as to the Israelites in the wild
erness. A Miss Andrews who lives with her
mother on Walnut Hills, is almost
insane from excitement, and passes
her whole time in weeping, singing and
praying. Among the other worshipers
of these new gods are some of the best
people in Cincinnati. Exposure to
public ridicul?, it is thought, will bring
them to their senses.
