ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, JULY, 2, 188G,
TAW U'ESTIOXS AXD AX.SWEJtS.
The Plaindealer of. lst week lieadeil
an article "Some things we wouM like
toknow,"ani then asks ten consecutive
questions as follows; and we also append
the answers.
"Why do the liquor men rejoice at the
election of Judge Strahanf'
We do not know, for a great many
i
temperance men reioicc also,
"Wiry do Republican saloon keepers j
boycott the Plaindeahr but subscribe
for The Review, notwithstanding its
politics!'' '
The only reason we can assign I3io.
Plaindealer is, the saloon keepers
want a good newspaper, notwithstand
ing everyone of them knows our views
on the traffic in which theyare engaged, '
, . ., . .-11 i- i
and in this particularly e parcticc
r 3 1 :
what we preach, and moieover, they j
have no objections to a good, sound, I
temperance paper even if it is Demo
cratic. "If the Republican party can trust
J3b Simon, who in hia official capacity
is a Republican, but who as an indi
vidual votes as a Democrat7'
About this man we know but little,
but if we belonged to ''the party of
progress, and moral ideas," we certain
ly would ask the gentleman to resign
hia lofty position that he holds in his
party.
"Why do the liquor men all over
the State want the pending constitution
amendment submitted at a special elec
tion, if submitted within thirty days
after the Legislature adjourns1'
We never heard of this proposition
before and cryo we do not know.
"If drinking publicly on the street
of Roseburg during a Prohibition ser
enade is just th thing"
We do not believe drinking "public-1
iy or privately is just tne ining.
"If the editor of The Review voted
the straight Democratic ticket and if
, , i
rrf. whv Tint.! 1
We did have a couple of friends for
whom we voted on the Republican
ticket, hence we did not vote the
straight Democratic ticket. Did the
editor of the Plaindealer vote for Mr.
Tobias for County Supt. 1 Echo an
swers no. Bro. do you take it straight
or mixed. This is one thing we would
like to know. 1
- "If a man votes for the most impor
tant candidates on the Democratic tick
et does that make him a good Repub
lican"
We answer it certainly is a symptom
of being a good citizen, and having at
heart the best interests of his country.
It may not make him a good Republi
can after the sort of some, but it does
elevate him in the estimation of all
clear-headed, well thinking people
"If the whiskey vote of the Repub
lican party which has made the su
preme bench Democratic, has been
-working in the interests oi the party
and are they satisfied?''
We did not know before that the
"whiskey element" in the Republican
party was so strong as to overcome .
such a large Republican majority as
seems to be claimed for Oregon. And
further; we had supposed that all the
Republicans were all temperance men
u we are to judge hy tne boastings or
some on certain occasions. O no, there
are not enough whiskey Republicans
to elect a Democratic Supreme Judge
iu Oregon, yet we believe all arc satis
fied that Strahan will make one of the
best judges Oregon ever had. Now
mark what we sav.
' "If the same vote did not help to
elect Pennoyer but still they are hon-
orable Republicans.
We have no means of knowing ex
cept this, we do know no man is dis
graced to vote for an honorable man,
Sylvester Pennoyer is au honorable
man, therefore all Republicans are hon
orable men that voted for Pennoyer.
"If the ring that tried to bust the
Oregonian succeeded, or did it get
busted in return1?"
We do not know about the ring, the
Oregonian does not show that thff tail
of a cyclone had struck it, but we must
confess that the Republican party in
Oregon looks more like it is "busted"
than anything we have seen lately ex
cept it is the Plaindealer. We have
taken it upon ourselves to answer these
questions. How do you like it?
The "Freeman, an organ of the
colored population, is out with a strong
eulogy of the President, which may
point to important political consequen
ce at the Sonth, should Cleveland have
any ambition to be his own successor.
It says, among other things: "He is a
good enougU President for us. We be
lieve thoroughly in his patriotism, in
his incorruptible honesty; we believe
he has the best good of the country nt
heart, and aims to execute the laws as
he finds them. Further, no President
since Lincoln has sympathized more
earnestly than he with the Lopes and
the aspirations of his colored fallow
citizens."

There is one phase of the labor ques
tion that is too often overlooked by
the laboring men, and that is that the
price of a day's labor can no more be
regulated by force than can the price
of a bus!id of wheat. The law may do
much toward protecting laboring men
from unjust oppression, and boards of
arbitration may sometimes be useful in
settling disputes between laborers and
employers, but laws and boards of ar-
bitration can no more compel a manu-
facturei" to l,a-v more for labor thau his
finished product will justify than they
can cornel the laborer to work for wa
ges which he deems insufficient. We
are free men in America, the employer
no less than the employee. Albany

thing more than Democratic Prohibi

News.
The above is from the leading stal
wart Republican paper in Oregon, and
shows plainly that they have imbibed
the Blaine and Logan on the whisky doc
trine traffic. High license is the word
and take the tax to build school houses,
blood money says Messrs Blaino and
Logan. We believe you should not
tax the traffic any more than anything
else, is taxed.
Mi:, Hermann is re-elocted by a
good majority considering the Demo
cratic victory in Oregon. . Now after
all is said and done, our townsman
j will reflect credit upon the distinguished
1)OSition he occupies. While Mr. Her
mann's opponent, Mr. Butler, was a
cntieman than whom no beUcr could

J I L
that Mr. Hermann will faithfully rep
resent us at Washington. We hope
to see him homo soon when his friends
will take pleasure in extending con-
gratulations.
The Prohibitionists claim virtually
a victory in W. T. last Monday. For
and against local option, in the large
cities against, in the small towns and
county "for." It will perhaps be about
a stand ofl' throughout the territory.
Mrs. Dunniway and her coadjutors
fought the local option law with might
and main. The Oregonian's editorial
last Wednesday on the woman sufler
age question is just about the correct
idea. Women are not unanimous for
the the suppression of the traffic.
Ok the 108 Senators, members and
Territorial delegates who compose Con
gress, seyenty-two are Methodists six
ty-three Baptists, forty-one Episcopa
lians, thirty-seven Presbyterians, thir
ty six Catholics, fifteen Unitarians,
eight Lutherans, ten Christians (Camp-
bellites,) and two Quakers, making a
; toia 0f 283 who are actively connected
wilh some church organization. This

1 association.
A claim is put up in Washington
territory that the women must vote so
as to uphold the liquor traffic, in order
to justify the bestowal of suffrage up
on themselves. But the argument
j should be just the other way. If wo
! men don't cast their votes so as to hurl
the Ijqnor traffic their failure to do
,wlU b Pr?f that they ought never
so
to
have the right of suffrage at all. Ore
gonian. We fully ajree with the 8bove sen
timent, that women should vote (where
they can) and use their inlluence for
the suppression of the liquor traffic.
Oct of the twenty-seven counties in
the state, Gov. Pennoyer carries all
but Tillamook, Washington, Marion,
Coos, Curry and Yamhill. Had the
Republicans of those counties suspected
what was coming, they would have
stood in and made it "unanimous,
As it is, we forgive them and hope

The Republican party is much like
the very tall man trying to sleep un
der short bed clothes. When it covers
its head its feet stick " our, and when
its feet are under cover its head is ex
posed, Sometimes we see Blaine and
sometimes Logan, one or the other is
always in sight. The blanket of defeat
is only large enough to cover one of
them at a time. Al Dem.
Postmaster General Vilas has eject
ed a saving for the next four years of
38 per cent on the cost of printing
stamped envelopes for the Department,
