The rocks and things up Iiei-e, give
a peculiar interest to this valley.
Among the specimens that prompt
thiB writing is the fishery at Mr. My
ers a where the East Umpqua falls
about nine feet at a jump-off. The
silver tailed salmon find an ob&ticle
that they surmount only by exposure
to the grab hook that pulls many of
them ashore. There was an idea
among the Indians that to spit in the
river above the fall not a fish would
show himself for a period, and the
primitive people made rules that the
water should not be tampered with in
the fishing season. This idea obtains
at present, cvs experiments of the "whites
to prove its falsity, have never been
repayedia fish.' The fact looks like
moonshine, but there is truth in moon
shine and seeming terror in reason and
every wise man is a loony when he
plants potatoes.
Near the falls is a ietiified log about
two feet in diameter; some say it was
sawed off; it is of oak. You can see
the seams and count the rinra of
growth plainly as in a newly cut stick.
There is a mark near one end as of an
ax chopped into split, but who did it
I wont say. This speciman was dug
out by Mr. Horton, some feet beneath
a deposit. They knock pieces off the
log and found in them tine grained
whetstones
Some less than a mile north of Win.
Swdbden's house stands a column of
atone thirty feet in diameter and three
hundred feet high. About eighty feet of
its lower partis of hard dark colored ig
neous rock, then about fifty feet of
conglomerate, which presents a white
appearance at a distance, but nearer
speckled with bowlders; on top of this
is a strata of more durablo deposit as
it has stood the action of tho wind
better and bulces somewhat to the
next layer which is also light colored
and of a less resistable composition
than the sjray cap rock it supports; for
the wind has worn it smoother and to
a less diameter, or else the lower part
of the cap rock was high water mark
when other billows surged around it
than those of air. Retiring from its
immediate piesence I noted its marked
divisions and viricle position like the
time candle that told the hours to
a romantic king, it would tell the ages
to a curious world; and what's its
name, calls it comical rock.
There is a natural biidsje a few rods
distant from the tower with an arch
about sixty feet high. You can cross
over by holding on to mansoneta that
grows upon its span, from this position
you can look over an extensive forest
principally fir, but millions of sugar
pine, cedar and maple besides a long
list of rare varieties that workers in
wood beyond the plains are only wish
ing for material for a new export en
terprise, or profitable neutralization by
more thrifty local industry.
On Mr. Engles place there are iiles
of iron; and Mr. Stephens cau show a
vein of as s;ood coal as can be produced
anywhere. We use lime that comes
across the contiocut ov from islands in
the Pacific, aud who cares where iclse
and leavo unnoticed and unkown,
millions of just as good lime within
our'limits that could be made a souio
of profit to many in need of employ
ment, if a board of trade or some other
fixing would attend to the market of
home production. There is capital
enough in this country but moth and
rust is upon it, and these cascades sing
on and on to no purpose, power wasting
and only wanting direction of human
will to lighten the burden of men. Too
much of the country is under the
blight of speculation the spirit of live
and let live is too retiring, the flame
of mutual interest of the country neo-
pie but makes a shadow in the blaze
of political ambition that rages in the
cities, and we read too much in the
light of pretended Tenefactors. The
country homes of a prosperous comma.

grounds of necessity but the fault is
not all on one side. I have in my
mind many illustrations that will base
the kingdom of labor upon industry,

A Spotted Ieer.

Two young ladies were examining
the animals in Central park, New York
last Sunday.

off. I feel the need of the drug at this
moment, and I fear the pain of the op

" 'I wish yoa to stay,' she resumed,

"Then she threw herself upon the
bed, and I watched her silently from my
chair. She lay quietly for a long time
with her eyes fixed on the ceiling, out by

black eyes, and the long lashes lav on
the marble cheeks, and she slept; but it
was not a healthful sleep. .She
scarcely seemed to breathe, and I
could perceive onlvi the . faintest
movement of the white robe across

seemed like the sleep of death. At length -I
arose, and, arranging my tools and
colors, went carefully to work. It was
fully an hour, and perhaps two, before
my task was done, for I took the utmost
pains. But through it all she made not
the smallest movement nor uttered the
slightest sound. At last the work was
done, and I arose and looked around
me. The lamp still burned brightly,
and the little clock on the mantel ticked
briskly. Just as my eye fell upon it it
struck three with a peculiar, soft, far-off
sound, like a distant cathedral chime. I
can not tell why, bnt a kind of terror
seized me. I stared about me and lis
tened, but heard no sound save the lick
ing of the clock. Then I realized where
I was, and a dozen fears suggested
themselves to me. Who was this woman?
Was she married or single? Was this a
trick to entrap me? Had &he taken too
large a quantity of the drug, and was
she dead or dying? I shook ner slight
ly, but her hand dropped limp upon the
bed. It was long past midnight, and I
was in an rmfamiliar part of the city.
Had she a husband or brother who would
pounce upon me in a moment? If she
was aeaa would l be held responsible r I
glanced at the silent form upon the bed,
and then, packing up my tools, hurried
ly left the house. . --
4 The next afternoon, whik working
in the museum, I chanoed to look - upl
and my heart leaped to my mouth, for
before me stood the lady of the night be
fore, her great lustrous eyes gazing
down upon me. Calling me aside, she
commended my work, paid me gener
ously and disappeared. I have never
seen her since.1'

a few months ago she came again and
blushed in earnest.

are to be married next week, and my .
dress and veil are all done, and I am
afraid of making him angry, for be

"Seizing a pencil, she marked a staff
and a few notes of music on a scrap ol
paper, and handed it to me. I sketched
on her shoulder a scroll bearing the in
itial B in the center, and then drew in
the staff and notes as she had indicated.
