noyer' also Webb; the contest between
Gibons and McBricle will be close, and
also 1 et ween II. S. Strahan and Judge
Waldo. Doubtless the Republicans
have carried the rest of the ticket, in
cluding also Judge Bean. Hamilton,
our candidate for Prosecuting Attor
ney; has a brilliant majority. On our
County ticket we have elected two Rep
resentatives, County Judge, Sheridan,
West, probably Ben. Agee and Hall,
Russell and Graham. Democrats, vou I r
have great reason to rejoice. We re
peat, you have done nobly. The future
is yours beyond a doubt As for the
Review we have been earnest, hon
orable and courteous. We have endea-
vored to do our duty with malice to-
ward none and with charity for all and
with sincere love for the grand old Dein-J

Without doubt tho Prohibition party
in the recent election has disclosed the
fact that it is a factor in Oregon. It

This question involves great doubt.

Our Prospects.
The election is oyer and the busy j
season is now upon us, tarmera are I
preparing for their hay harvest. The J
wool clip is being marketed daily, a
revival of business and era of general
prosperity may be looked for. I
Tho depression which has effected us I
for the last few ydars may justly be I
attributed to a number of causes, first
a falling off in the crops a lack of
something to sell that would bring
money into the country while there
has been a heavy drainage upon our
cash for merchandise, machinery etc.
In other words our demands have been
disproportionate to our means of sup
plying them. The cessation of public
works the stoppage in building railroads
has cut off one of the meaus of supply
ing the necessary cash for transacting
the business of life; a large number of
people have been left without perma
nent employment. The wages paid to
the numerous Chinaman employed by
our people have been Bent out of our
country for which we get no return
all these constant drains hare contrib
uted to make money scarce and teach
our people a forced lesson in economy.
A revival of good crops, a release
from the Chinese scourge, a resumption
of public enterprise together with the
activity which is' promised in the devel
opment of our mineral resourses pre
sents a bright future for Oregon.
Gladstone Defeated.
Gladstone's Home Rule Bill has
been defeated by a vote of 311 for the
measure and 341 against it a majori
ty of 30. The debate on the bill was
characterized by being one of the
most confusing and noisy affairs that
it has been our lot to chronicle for a
long while, in the history of the parli
amentary actions of tho civilized world.
When an important measure id de
feated, it is generally the rule of the
British parliament to dissolve or the
cabinet resign. It is probable that the
former will be the case and a new
election will ba held, for which pre
parations are already being made. It
promises to be the most exciting and
bitterly contested election held in the
British realm for years, with the home
rule question for the main issue in the
struggle.
The Plaindealer very unfairly at
tributes to us, that which by an over
sight was clipped from the Coos Lay
News, and makes us personally respon
sible for its manufacture, in reference
to CoL Cornelius having a son in the
enitentiary.
Cleveland is the second who has
been married in office. John Tyler
married his second wife while presi
dent, twenty months after the death of
his first wife.
That "sublime cheek" man in the
Plaindealer last week of course cannot
write good english, much less good

tion is pretty well settled which party
will control the ship of state in her
next two years' cruise. The battle
has been fought and the field cleared
and a glorious victory crowns the
labors of the Democracy. Owing to
tlie failure of Cow Creek precinct to
send in its returns on time, thereby
delaying the canvass of the vote of the

county, we are unable to give the au

returns show conclusively that the
Democratic victory is complete, with a
very few exceptions. The result stands
about as follows: Ben. Agee, for Sheriff,
over laylor will reach nearly one
hundred, while Dave West leaves
Stearns in the background to the tune

beats Colvig by a light vote, while the
Commissioners will be divided, McGee

we cannot tell which is elected. Gib
ons and Webb are probably elected,
while Nickell is beaten by Baker.
Superintendent McElroy is re elected.
For Judge of the second Judicial Dis
trict Bean is reinstated, and Hamilton's
majority for District Attorney over.
Raybura is almost phenominal, he un
doubtedly getting the largest majority
of any man on the ticket. Democrats,
let us rejoice, the victory is complete,
and Democracy reigns supreme in the
grand old state of Oregon. Now let
us give three cheers, are you ready

THE RA.IZ.Y AT OAKLASD.
Our reporter thinking he might accumulate
some of the wherewithal which helps to add
news to the columns of a newspaper, concluded
last Saturday morning that he would board
the morning train and take in the rally which
was held in Oakland on that day. And on
looking around he found that he was to enjoy
the company of the Junior Band, and a great
many candidates on the different tickets and
also a great many of Koseburg's citizens who
took advantage of the occasion to visit friends
and relatives there. The trip down was en
livened by music from the band and everybody
seemed happy and determined to have a good
time. On arriving at Oakiand the crowd
wended their way to the different hotels and
enjoyed breakfast, with the exception of the
humble rep orter who was forced to be con
tent. -with cheese and crackers. Nothing of
special importance occured until the afiernoon
when it was announced that speaking would
be held in Mr. Brown's hall, and in due time
a large crowd assembled to listen to the speak
ers of the day. Mr. Ramp was the first gentle
man called upon, who rosjHmded in an able,
clear and concise manner in the intere-.t of the
Prohibition party. Mr. Ramp is a most able
speaker, his voice being very loud, clear and
distinct arid his arguments are strong and to
the point. Mr. Benjamin followed with an
able speech in the interest of the republican
party. Mr. Benjamin' is well known as an
able talker and thcrefure comment is unneces
sary in repard to him. Several other speak
ers followed including" Messrs Colvig, Ball and
Owens. - Mr. Colvig endeavored to impress
upon his hearers that the Republican party was
the party of progress and reform and that
nothing had ever went to show lhat it would
disregard Us obligations if the ticket was
elected. Mr. Ball spoke at some length in
favor of Democracy and the ticket. His re
marks were closely followed by Mr. Owens
who scored him (Mr. Ball) rather severely for his
antagonism to the Prohibition ticket and Pro
hibition in general. After the meeting had
adjourned, supper was the next thing in order,
after which quite a large crowd repaired to
the depot and patiently awaited the coming of
the excursion train from Roseburg. They
were not kept long in suspense for it was soon
seen rounJing the curve aad dashing toward
the station . This train brought two coackes
which were literally packed with citizens from
Roseburg and vicinity, it also having on board
the troupes who were to play at the evening's
entertainment. The crowd immediately re
paired to the hall again and soon packed it to
overflowing in anticipation of the evcning's
amusement. "The Little Brown Jug was
the first piece on the programme, and to only
say that the company did well, hardly bespeaks
enough for them, as each one endeavered to
do better than they had ever done before,
and we must say they accomplished their in
tentions. AU we regret is that we have not
space enough for personal mention of each
member ot the troupe, i his drama was
followed by a song by Miss Allie Rose, entitled
"Beautiful Dreams of the Twilieht." All
who have ever heard Miss Rose sing, know
that words cannot carry praise enough for her
sweet and splendid voice. The next on the
programme was the comedy of "Handy Andy."
It is not necessary to dwell upon the merits of
those who played this laughable farce as their
names bespeaks the success of anything they
attempt in that line. This piece wound up
the day and evening's programme, and the
Roseburg crowd was soon on board the train
again speeding toward home, having enjoyed
one of the most pleasant events of the cam
paign.
J usT as we go to press there is little
change in the situation of affairs in re
gard to election returns. There is a
few changes in regard to the stats of
ficials. It is pretty certain that Mc-
Bride has won the office of Secretary
of State, beating Gibons by a fiair ma-
joriy. Jt is thought Hermann s major
ity will reach about the same figures as
it did two years ago, 2000. Pennoyer
walks to the gubernatorial chair with
about the same figures. McElroy and
Laker have majorities of about 1500
each.

construction of wagon bridge over Pass Cieek
