This entirely new ajid fsplcndidly
illustrated volume is the crowning
life-work of the
D- Gough. Every one is familiar with
the story of his early life, and of his
rescue from a drunkard's grave, and
how this once wretched and despised
sot became one of the most famous
men of our time and the best km,wn
speaker in the world. For seven
years he stood amid the horrors of
delirium tremens, an abject slave to
tuc bottle; and his condition and
wretched appearance were such as to
causa people to exclaim 'There's the
man who has been in hell." Since
thut time the good he has accomplished
cannot bo estimated. The rich and
poor, the high, the low, the learned
and unlearned, have been alike thrilled
and moved by his burning words.
He has swayed brilliant audiences of
royalty and fashion; has spoken in
State prisons, jails, poor houses, pen
itentiaries, reform schools, and houses
of collection; to the deaf, and dumb,
and blind, to audiences composed
wholly of outcasts; and audiences
numbering thousands of children.
At his feet more than ten million
people have sat and listened in admi
ration and wonder. In his library mav
be seen a set of large volumes-a far
better memorial of his life and labors
than any monument of marble or
bronze-containing the original signa
tures of one hundred and fifty thousand
men and women who were induced to
sign the pledge through his personal
efforts. These na-nos- many of them
tear oedewed and written with tremb
ling hand- represent stories of happi
ness and woe, of ruin and remorse, of
blighted, hopes and wasted lives, of
battles fought and victory won. To
givcsuiue ot mese tunning uie histories:
to depict scenes of joy and sadnees; to
lift the curtain of life's stage and
show its tragedy and comedy; and to
draw "living truths" from the lessons
thus taught, and brinjr them home tc
every heart, is the prime object of this
volume.
Many distinguished men and women
have long urged Mr. Gough to write
this book. They knew that in. forty,
five years of unceasing work among'all
classes in Europe and America, he
has seen much of th hrirrhi
side of life, and the wealth of material
in his possession would make one of
the most valuable and thrillino- VmnVa
of the day. Rev. Dr. Lyman Abbott,
the eminent editor and divine, has
written the story of Mr. Ormo-Va lif
and career for tue book.
It is John R. Gough in print. In
it he gives to the world in permanent
form Lis best thoughts on many topics,
his most touching tales, his most stir
ring anecdotes and incidents, his most
telling stories of deepest pathos and
keenest humor. As a story teller he
has never been equaled. Tho tender
ness of his pathos and the spice of his
humor are irresistible But whether
he narrates a story of mirth or of sor
row, it is always to illustrate great and
living truths. Stranger stories are here
told than romance eyer dreamed of,
every one of them drawn from real life
by a master hand. In every chapter
he weaves in anecdote after anecdote,
incident after inudent, story after
story, and underneath them all lie
Living Truths," that stand outasbea
con lights. He plays upon the read
er's feelings as with an enchanter's
wand, at one time filling his heart with
gladness, at another blinding his eyes
with tears. At his bidding hearts are
melted, and stern, strong men, as well
as sensitive women, weep tears of com
passion, are aroused to indignation, or
moved to uncontrollable laughter in
spite of every effort to control his feel-
mgs.
This work is wholly and entirely ne
3W
Not one word of it has ever before been
published. It contains nothing that
appears in Mr. Gongh's '-Autobiography"
(18G9), or in his "Sunlight and
Shadow" (1880).. This is a totally dif
ferent work, and is conceded by critics,
and by the entire press, to be the crown
ing life-work of its illustrious author.
Its illustrations are the best we have
ever seen. It contains two hundred
and twenty-seven fine engravings by
the best artists and engravers in the
world. Many of these illustrations are
"too funny for anything," while others
depict wretchedness and woe. Sixteen
of these engravings are full paged ones,
and are magnificent 'specimens of art
Two hundred and nine are text illus
trations. There are two fine steel-plate
portraits. Ono is from a life-size full
length painting, showing Mr. Gough
as he appeared shortly after his rescue.
The other is from a photograph just
taken. All in all, it is one of the fin
est and most elaborately illustrated
volumes ever produced by the Ameri

Both Senators Dolph and Mitchell
are well acquainted with the great ne
cessity and importanco of pushing the
work of improvement at Yaquina Bay
to a speedy completion,- and in view of
tha fact, and the favorable position Mr.
Dolph occupies as a member of the
senate committee on commerce, we see
no reason why , the appropriation for
Yaquina cannot be increased from
580,000 to $100,000. Senator Dolph
as a member of that committee, can,
if he desires exert a wonderful influ
ence in behalf of this appropriation.
The whole Willamette valley is inter
ested in this matter, and the people
are looking to their representatives
in Washington to do all in their power
for this harbor which has assumed such
vast importance to them. ' We sincere'
ly hope that Senator Dolph will take
advantage of the opportunity within
his reach to increase the annronriatinn
for Yaquina Bay to $100,000. Ga
