ROSEBURG REVIEW
FRIDAY, APRIL, 16, 1886.
victory cast jts too dear.
There is abundant evidence of great
political dissatisfaction in the state of
Oregon. The completo and rapid dis
integration of the Republican party as
a state and national organization is not
to be gainsayed. The Republican par
ty has filled its mission and stalks upon
the stage a ghost of its former greatness.
In sixteen states of the union it has no
organization and can have no hope of
national success save through an appeal
to sectional hatred. That appeal has
lost its force and power, and will never
again be the shibboleth of victory.
But it is with matters of state interest
with which we wish to deal. From an
editorial in the Portland New there
can be no doubt but that the Repub
lican party of Marion county is com
pletely demoralized. The rule 'of the
"bosses" there have become unendur
able and a general revolt is expected.
The News predicts that the same result
may occur in Multnomah. This note
has already been struck by the Ore
gonian. This demoralization is caused
by two things, first, the discontent of
the people at the power assumed by a
few leaders who "set up" primaries and
control conventions and second the
growing strength of the sentiment in
favor of the prohibition of the liquor
traffic. Now gentlemen, of the De
mocracy can we not read in this dry
rot of the opposition a lesson for our
own benefit. The disease is in the at
mosphere and is contasnoits, and has
made this malignant attack upon the
Republican party beeause in this state
that party is in the majority, while the
Democracy being in the minority has
been able to control its differences. The
demoralization of the opposition gives
the Democracy its opportunity. It
must prepare to assume the responsi
bility of government in this state and
must rise to the fullest conception of the
people's demands. The people of Oregon
do not desire packed conventions or
boss rule and they do demand the ful
lest and . frankest discussion upon a!
great issues. The Review believes that
a large majority of the truest, ablest
and stannchest leaders of the Demo"
cratic party in Oregon are in favor of
fully testing this great question before
the people. It therefore asks of these
leaders that they assert their highest
manhood at the State-Convention, and
breathe into the platform those ideas
that are destined to give a free and
full expression of the people at the
polls. The Democratic party can stand
defeat It is the great conservative
organization of the people. What
cannot stand, however, is victory at the
sacrifice of a single principle. It can
not be made the apologist and defender
of wrong. Let its leaders boldly speak
the truth.' We do not fear dofeat, but
we do fear that victory can be pur
chased at too dear a piice.
IlowUra and Oroictera.
Whenever the land thieves have been
interfered with by our Democratic ad
ministration it has raised an angry
howl from the Republican press from
Maine to California. When the cat
tie barons are compeled to vacate their
stolen possessions, the same organs
howl again. When the railroad steals
are opened up to view and they are
called to account, every Republican
editor is up in arms and ready to fight
When the protected monopoly is to
have its robberies of the masses inter
fered with, they shout for the poor

tion attempts to investigate the fraud-

and when we investigate the timber
stealing and knock Mormonism end
ways, Ed. Review, every mother's
son of them is heard howling himself
hoarse at the administration. All the
corrupt rings that grew up and flour
ished during the long years bf Repub
lican rule have gathered themselves
together for a combined assault upon
the administration, and it is the duty
of every Democrat and all good citi
zens to stand by the President in his
great work of reform. He is a strong
man, but he needs the support and en
couragement of the people. The Dem
ocratic party must stand by him or
perish. There may be differences of
opinion about minor matters, but here
there must be a solid front and no wav
ering. In the great contest with the
combined power of the monopolists
and public plunderers, Grover Cleve
land and his paity must stand or fall
together. Albany Democrat.
'It is understood Vilas has asked
Third Assistant Postmaster General
Hazen to resign. Hazen is the last
of the Republican Bureau officials in
the Democratic Administration. He
has been in office for many yeare and
ha3 risen from clerk to chief clerk.
Nash, of the same department, is 6aid
to be his sucsessor
No good citizen should shirk the re
sponsibility of casting his vote for the
best men, the Democrats must there
fore place the very best men on their
ticket, 'and we are safe in saying that
they will do this very thing.

RAILROAD TO COOS.
- It is now a settled fact that the
steam-ships of the O. R. & N Co., will
not drain Western Oregon of its pro
ducts, nor will thsy supply it with
freights as they have done in years
gone by. Already the Yaquina route
is doing an immense freight business.
From Yreka in California to Salem
Oregon freights now are delivered at
points between these two cities a dis
tance of three hundred and fifty miles
over the Yaquina route in Benton
county. Nearly all the groceries and
heavy goods that are used in the cities
of the Willamette south of and in.
eluding Salem purchased in San Fran
cisco brought over this new and cheap
route, and in less time than it takes' on
the old route by the way of the Col
umbia river. And this is but the be
ginning of the business that is being
built up by this new enterprise. The
O. R. & N. Co., will have the monopoly
no longer. Not only are the freights
less, but the time saved is one third
over the Yaquina route as against the
Columbia. But why shculcl Southern
Oregon go via Yaquina when there is
a far better harbor at Coos Bay. The
Yaquina is depending largely on South
em Oregon for support when in point
of fact, the most feasible and profitable
route lays between Rosebnrg and Coos
Bay. Roseburg would become the
junction and distributing depot for
freights, east and west and for the
north and the south The entire
Southern Oregon and the Northern
California trade should come over the
route from Coos Bay to Roseburg,
We include in this market the entire
Southeastern and middle Oregon
Were a railroad built from Coos Bay
to Roseburg it would drain a country
as large as New England, and that
too without a rival. It would be ha'
of the State or Territory that would
sustain this Coos bay route And as
population would come in folio win,
the railroad a trade and traffic would
be built up that we would find in no
other part of Oregon. Consider for
moment that there would be traffic
both ways over this road. Coos, Cur
ry and Douglas counties can produce
more traffic in every thing to be found
in Oregon than all the other counties
put together. No other counties have
the coal as extensively distributed
anion" them as these counties. No
other counties have the white cedar
and myrtle1 timber that are found in
these counties. And we may add the
hemlock, spruce, ash and alder. The
best article of fir is found here also,
More than this there is a large and in
creasing population in Coos and Curry
counties, And they are the only coast
counties in Oregon ; where there is a
large population or any at all scarcely
These three counties are capable of
sustaining one hundred thousand pop
ulation. There is one State in the
union no larger than either Douglas
or Coos counties that sustains a popu
lation of four hundred and fifty thou
sand. It is marked all over with rail
road tracks. Is there any reason why
a route that of itself can furnish no
traffic whatever to support it should be
sustained by those who would patron
ize a railroad to Coos Bay if built and
that too over a self sustaining route
virtually independent in that particu
lar? But with the addition of outside
traffic how much more strongly the ar
sument comes that there should be a
railroad to Coos Bay for the benefit of
Southern Oregon. Push.
The theory by which the constitu
tion of the United States a8 well as the
constitutions of the several states and
territories is interpreted by the Demo
cratic party seems to' meet the general
approval of all concerned, therefore all
Democrats should hold allegiance to
that party giving the lest government,

.1 QV1SSTION OF PRIVLEGE.
Ed. Review: Can a person conci
entiously accept an appointment to
public office, from a political party, and
while holding the office denounce that
party through the public prints?
Would not common honesty and self
respect dictate that the person should
resign before denouncing the party
under whom he holds his office? And
docs not such a cause pursued by a
federal office holder come within the
spirit and letter of the civil service
bill and tenure of office acts? Would
not such a course fall within the cata
logue of offensive partisan? By aus
wering these questions you will confer
a favor upon many citizens.
Enquirer.
We refer these pertinent question
to some one who is better versed in
civil service reform than ourselves.
Ed.
Tiie question of temperance is the
leading issue of the hour, let no
man on your ticket who will not sub
mit this to the people, and favors the
temperance side.

The fatal rapidity with which slight
Colds and Coughs frequently develop
into the gravest maladies of the throat
and lungs, is a consideration which should
impel every prudent person to keep at
hand, as a household remedy, a bottle of
AYEK'S CIIERRY PECTORAL.
Nothing else gives such Immediate relief
and works so sure a cure in all affections
of this class. That eminent physician.
Prof. F. Sweetzer, of the Maine Medical
School, Brunswick, Mc., says :
"Medical science has produced no other ano
dyne expectorant so good as Ater'b Chirrt
Pectoral. It is invaluable for diseases of the
throat and lungs."
The same opinion is expressed by the
well-known Dr. L. J. Addison, of Chicago,
111., who says :
"I have never found, in thirty-fire year of
continuous study and practice of medicine, any
preparation of so great value as A YB R's Chbrbt
Pectoral, for treatment of diseases of the
throat and lungs. It not only breaks up colds
and cures severe coughs, but Is more effective
than anything else in relieving even the most
serious bronchial ana pulmon&ry affections."
AYER'S
Cherry Pectoral
Is not a new claimant for popular confi
dence, but a medicine which is to-day
savins the lives of the third generation
who nave come Into being since it was
first offered to the public.
There is not a household in which this
invaluable remedy has once been in
troduced where its use has ever been
abandoned, and there is not a person
who has ever given it a proper trial
for any throat or lung disease suscep
tible of cure, who has not been made
well bv it.
AYER'S CHEERY PECTORAL has,
In numberless instances, cured obstinate
cases of chronic Bronchitis, Laryngitis,
and even acuta Pneumonia, ana has
saved many patients in the earlier stages
of Pulmonary Consumption. It is a
medicine that only requires to be taken In
small doses, is pleasant to the taste, and is
needed in every house where there are
children, as there is nothing bo good as
AYER'S CIIERRY PECTORAL for treat
merit of Croup and Whooping Cough.
These are all plain facts, which can bo
verified bv anybody, and should be re
membered by everybody.
