Washix(jton, March 22, 188G. .
With the Senate's investigation of
the Administration, tlio House Com
mittee's investigation of Pan-Elccw.ic
stock, and another investigation of the
Commissioner of Pensions in regard to
the charges he brought against his pre
decessor, Dudlej, it would soem thai
the spirit of inquiry were raging here
now.
On the conlrwy all of these affairs
are dismal farces. So sensations have
been evolved from the Telephone busi
ness, and public interest in it is rapidly
subsiding. Hon. Casey Young has
contradicted the imputations against
the A ttoi-ney-Geherai; aiid in se3ln"g

land, none of which bear on the sub
ject under investigation
Gen. Black js well fortified with
proof of his allegations against ex-Com
missionerLVidley's Republican Pension
Machine. He has submitted cases of
gross irregularity, showing that claims
were advanced and allowed as partisan
rewards, and he has hundreds of affida
vits in reserve.
As to the Senate's fight for pajwrsj
none but the blindest of partisans can
tec any other out come of the Republi
can situation than a surrender. There
is a desire on the part of ost of the
Senators who have followed Mr. Ed

so many Senators 111 contradictions and

strengthened the President in hisposi-

intently that their very existence is
stronglv threatened.

Ilio weakest point of the Repubh-
