FRIDAY, FEBRUARY, 12, 1886.
VARIETIES.
A Sham professor of Christianity
does more harm than the mo3t virulent
infidel. Ai yet some persons are so
self -deluded that they hope to get to
heaven on a sham profession. Stnpkl
idity, hypociisy, and presumption an
evil trinity are apt to be found to
gether.
Men talk patronizingly of "Chris
tianizing the masses," whose heathenism,-though
sleek ond shiny, is in the
sight of Cod more pronounced than
that of the vilest dwellers in the slum.
There is nothing so hard as luxurious
selfishness lacquered oyer by genteel
pharisceism.
An Austin boy came from school
very much excited, and told his father
that all human beings were descended
from the apes, which made the old man
so mad that he replied angrily: lThat
, may be the caso with you, but it ain't
with me, I can tell you that now, my
son " The boy didn't say any thing,
but when his mother came home he
told her about it
Mr. Walter Rye has published a
History of Norfolk," says the Lon
don Truth. He gives Bome curious
instances of fictitious Norman edi
grces. The Howards, it would seem,
are descended from a hogward, whose
business it was to mind hogs; the Town
hends from one John atte Town's-end
who was a small tenant farmer in 1398;
the Bulwer, frcin the bull-ward, as
the man was called who looked after,
the manor bull.
What men usually say of misfortunes
that they never ceme alone, may with
equal truth be said of good fortune
nay, of other circumstances which
gather around us in a harmonious way,
whether it arise from a fatality or
that man has the power of attracting to
himself things that are mutually re
lated. "Why are two buttons put on the
back of a man's coat?" asks a writer.
They are put on for the same reason
that about 850 buttons are put on the
front of a woman's dress, and of course
everybody knows why a lady's dress is
thus garnished. Noiristown Herald.

Public spirited American citizens
dislike a high tariff or they dislike free
trade; the men who oppose the liquor
traffic generally hate it, having directly
or indirectly felt its sting. Hence the.
intensity that so astonishes many in
the prohibition fight.
Several recent notable exhibitions of
magnanimity and gentlemanly delicacy

servants. There was, and is, room for
farther progress.

The citizens of Portland are intense
ly interested concerning the Chinese
question, and they mean business.
The gain that will accrue to Portland
by the expulsion of these pesky, stink
ing heathen, from the very heart of
that great city, can hardly be com
puted in dollars and cents. It will
be a grand moral as well as economic
revolution. As a sanitary measure its
worth is inestimable. When these
heathens are gone people will wonder
how they ever . allowed them to en
trench themselves and gain such a firm
foothold. -Courier.
Several months ago the Democrat
gave an account of how a man calling
himself Whitney 4in Portland had cer
tain certificates of deposit printed in
Portland and then at Butte, Montana,
Ogden, and Other places tried to get
money en certain bank paper. As a
sequel to the above the same man was
a short time ago arrested in Chicago,
under the name of Hale. It now
transpires that he was a partner--cf
one of the most famous formers of : this
century, and haaiimself had a check
ered carfGrTiiaving served nearly ten
years for previous forgeries. On his
last expedition he, with his gang, it is
reported, collected about fifty thousand
dollars, presenting forged paper to
banks all ever the United States, many
times being successful Although he
obtained no money from Oregon we are
glad to know that he has at last been
brought to justice. , . -
HOW LAMP CH1MXET8 ABE MADE.
What Kind is the Beat.
No kind of manufacturing is so in
teresting to many people as glass mak
ing, and it really deserves attention
tor the use of glass was universal, ex
ceeded by no other article unless it be
iron.
There are quite a variety of kinds
of glass, and the composition has been
very much changed during the past
tew years. For instance, we seldom
get the good flint glassware formerly
made. We may visit the stores in
vain to find a dozen good flint goblets.
Hence the frequent and easy breakage
at which so many have wondered.
This difference is explained by the use
of what manufacturers call lime-glass
(made of lime, soda-ash and sand)
which make cheap and nice looking
glass, but it is the "easy break" kind.
While real (or lead) glass made from,
potash, lead and sand, is much more
durable, being a better conductor of
heat and a very much tougher ware.
It is somewhat more expensive but
cheaper in the end to the consumer.
This is particularly true of lamp
chimneys, and one reason there is so
large a breakage of them (and a most
annoying breakage it is) is tha t so
nianv are made of Lime Glass, and so
few comparatively of the real Flint
Glass.
Many people think "glass is glass"
and do not know what to buy or what
kind of chimneys to call for. One
thing can be depended upon, viz: that
if no mention is made, and even then
sometimes, the commonest kind of
bieakable Lime Glass chimney will be
handed over the counter, and ten to
one by the time one gets comfortably
seated to read, away goesthe chimney.
There is one glass manufactory in
Pittsburgh, Pa., where the finest
quality of glass is made, especially for
Lamp Chimneys, and where their goods
are known this firm have a very ex
tended trade. The firm is Geo. A.
McBeth & Co., proprietors of the Pitts
burgh Lead Glass Works.
On a visit to their works about three
hundred men arc found busy as bees,
making lamp chimney at tho rate of
from 125,000' to 150,000 per week.
Their process of manufacturing, and
materials used, are both curious and
interesting.
First, they use the pure white sand
found in but few localities, which,
when thoroughly washed and dried, is
almost white as snow. Then the pot
ash (purified) and the leadj in the form
of oxide, perfectly pure, are added to
the sand and thoroughly mixed until
the batch resembles ordinary sugar in
grain, but is quite red in color. It is
now ready to go into the pots twenty
four in number, made of a peculiar
kind of clay, being from 42 to 48 in
ches in height and about the same in
width. These pots are closed at the
top, to prevent the fire from injuring
the melted glass, with the mouth on
the side near the top. The ! furnace
being circular, the pots when placed
in position, and covered with fire brick,
present $heir open mouths only, and
when looked at resembles a hot sum
mer's sun.
When in this condition the pot is
filled with the mixture -above men
tioned, closed tight, and in about twenty-four
hours is about ready to work.
A workman called a gatherer, dips his
pipe into the melted mass and gathers
enough on its end to make a chimney.
This he rolls on a smooth iron plate to
get evenly on end of pipe, ' when he
blows it about the size of a boy's top,
and hands it to another workman, who
further blows it up, and proceeds to
form the lower part of chimney, which
fits the burners, which he does by
rming a small knot on the j end of
the now pear-shaped bulb, giving
it a sharp stroke ; with his shears
breaks the knob off leaving a small
hole in the bottom of the bulb.
It is now beated red hot again and
the lower end of , the chimney formed
by the blower whirling and spreading
the glass with a tool resembling sheep-
shears, but larger and narrower blades.
The chimney is now broken off the
pipe and put into a "snap" an instru
ment which holds it as one would
clutch an apple firmly in tho hand, and
heated red hot again.
The top is finished by machinery in
vented and owned by this firm, making
it bell-shaped and beaded on the top,
from which the chimney gets the name
"Pearl Top," distinguishing them from
the ordinary crimped or scalloped tops
made of poor glass.
This form has been closely imitated
and it has been found necessary to affix
a label and wrapper with special men
tion of the name.
There is no process by which poor
glass can be made good, and all "fancy"
processes of "annealing" and "tempeif
ing" are lost fr om the first or second
time the chimney is heated on the
lamp, -
The firm of Geo. A. McBeth & Co.
make about one hundred and fifty
different shaped chimneys, all of this
fine quality glass, and as some are so
shaped that the "Pearl Top" cannot be
put on, each chimney is labeled with
their trade mark.
Strangers visiting Pittsburgh would
be well repaid by a trip throrgk the
extensive works of the firm, where al
though lamp chimneys are the leading
product yet they will find globes and
a great variety of other appliances.
