    ROSEBDRG REVIEW
FRIDAY,- FEBRUARY, 5, 1880.
and last lmt not least; in the produc
tion of nieiital, moral and physical dis
ease and death tilling our country with
drunkenness, vice and crime; our pris
ons and insane asylums with inmates
and the grave with suicides. From all
this we as e irresistal.lv driven to the
conclusion that allopathy is the tircat
cauc of intemperance which pahs in
to insignificance all and every other
cause combined. Tlic chief culprit
that sits undisturbed on his throne
,while it is considered vile heresy to
call his assumptions into fincslioii.
The folly -of our prohibition friends
is clearly seen in a summary of the
following facts. First: they do not
aim a single blow at the great cause of
intemperance. Secondly: they uphold
suport and make provision for its
perpetration by employing allopathy,
when sick swallowing her intoxicating
narcotics and by providing for their use
as medicine. Third: they sound no
notes of warning against any intoxi
cant except alchohol and they trv to
make it the "scape-goat" to bear the
sins of all other poisons, thus practi
cing fraud and deception uiwn the
unsuspecting. Fourth: they even
sanction the use of alcohol, as a medi
cine, as well as, all other poisons, and
aim to prohibit the manufacture,
sale and use of alcoholic liquors, only
as a barerae. The prohibition party
goes no farther than this. For the
right, to manufacture, use and sell al
coholic liquor for medical purposes,
is not called in question, but is, posi
tively concceded by the prohibitionists.
Indeed; this is as far as they can, or
dare go, without attacking allopathy
the hoary headed monster in his citadel.
For the moment that the medical
aspect'of this question is presented,
that instant you beard the lion in his
lair; jwho, shaking his shaggy mane,
would spread hia talons and show his
carniverous teeth, while his mut
tering roar would be heard all
oyer the land, and answered by
a hundred thousand doctors of Amer
ica, -who would rally around the
standard, upon which is written in
characters of death, the motto; where
poison is there is virtue. It argues i-'-norance,
insincerity, or cowardice upon
part of prohibitionists, that they have
suffered this king of intemperance, to
remain so long undisturbed on his
throne, swaying his sceptre throughout
the land without even a mutter of
"iwwtiuvui ufuu men Jillt, WUUe
they attempt to correct only now and
then, a faulty vassal. But suppose
the prohibitionists accomplish all they
propose, that is, stop the use of alco
holic liquors as a beverage. What
then; why simply this: none will be
used as a beverage, and no one would be
likely to get drunk on alcoholic liquors
except thoso made bo by the doctors.
wi wsjo jrvuu U1CU vruuiu llOv
drink whiskey or spend their money
for it, under the most stringent laws,
and the most scrupulous observances
of those laws, by the people, this is
tho utmostood that the most sanguine
can possibly expect or hope for. This
would not prevent men from grat
ifying their narcotic irritants, for
such articles constitute the great
mass of allopathic medicines! Neither
would it prevent men from becoming
intoxicated, for intoxicating agents are
found in great abundance, exclusive
of alcoholic liquors. The drunkeness
of many nations is produced wholly
by allopathic medicines, without any
alcohol. The drunkness of the inhabi
tants of Persia, Hindoostan, Arabia,
and Egypt furnish example of this
fact and prove beyond the power of
successful contradiction that alcoholic
beverages are not essential to drunken
aess; ' neither would such meanness
break up the haunts of vice. Our sa
loons would be changed in manner but
not in character. Tho low, the vulgar,
the gambler and drunkards, would be
fcund there; the card and billiard
tables, and the intoxicating narcotic
beverages would be there and young
men and boys- would be drawn in and
ruined then, as they are now and men
would spend their time and money as
they jnow do. The hundred thousand
doctors of America would continue, to
administer nearly three hundred vile
poisons, poisoning the blood, weaken
ing the intellect, . intoxicating the
brainsprostrating and paralyzing the
nervous system weaking and destioy
ing the moral organs, and exciting the
animal propensities, and thus pervert
ing every faculty of the soul, mind and
body; preparing men. and women for
a place in the lowest dives in degrada
tion, vice and immorality. From all
this it is eyident that all the physical
and mental " wrecks, legitimate se
quences of a poisonous medication will
still continue to corse our race, calling
for hospitals, asylums, poor houses,
and prisons. Bat we have no reasons
for believing that such a law would
receive such a hearty support as we
have just Bupposod. For all who
desire alcoholic liquors, will make
every effort to procure them, ; This
they can. do in several ways no matter
how stringent the law, so long as the
right to use them as a medicine is
guaranteed. The right to use liquors
for medical purposes must stand npon
the same grounds as does the right to
take medicine; and as the law rceog
nizes poisons as medicine, so long the
right to take them must exist. For
one of the grand civic rights of every
citizen is the right to choose the means
by which his body may be icstored to
health when diseased, and no man has
any authority to say that he shall not
thus choose for himself. If ho chooses
alcohol or any other remedy it is his
prerogative. lie has also the same
civic right to choose for his children
that ho has fur himself; thus he has a
right, to buy whiskey by the pint or
gallon for medicine but the whisky sot
need not resort to such measures to
get all the whiskey necessary to satisfy
his thirst. ,ltc can buy it in patent
medicines, bittern, etc., by the gross if
he choose. It may cost him a little
more and thus add to tho squaliid pov
erty of his family. The hundred
thousand doctors of America, many of
them would prescribj it to the habit
ual diunk '.nl for the sake of the fee,
and all of them would continue to give
it to their patients of all jiges and
j classes as they now do. This with the
j other narcotics which they constantly
use wdl continue to add fuel to tht
flames of intemperance, bring more and
more under its control, pervertin" every
a petite, every feeling and ever im
pulse of the soul. Ilcjiee wo S(.u that
the prohibition must of necessity U;
a failure, it is lighting a shadow
and leaves the substance untouched,
like the boy, who sees tho shadow of
another boy on the wall goes to strik
ing and kicking the shadow, threatniii '
its destruction while Jie boy whoseshad-
ow he is lighting looks on. laugh in
iit his duplicity, just so the prohibition
ists are lighting a shadow an effect
while they have nothing to say or do
against thcc-Aiisobut seem det;rmined to
sustain and perpetuate it. Remove the
substance and the shadow will flee;
remove the cause of intemperance and
it will cease to exist. We have seen
that the use of alcoholic liquors as a
beverage is not the cause, but the
effect of intemperance like the shad
ow on tho wall. That the cause of
intemperance is found in tho disordered
state of the physical and mental con
ditions of the system and this disor
dered state is engendered by narcotics
which get into the body, the chief
cause of their being put there is found
in the belief existing in the minds, of
some people that poisons are 0od
medicines and this belief comes from
allopathy, therefore, a poisonoup. mod
cations is the foundation stone, of in
temperance; the hinge upon wliich the
great flood-gate of intempenvnee is al
lowed to swing open wide and free and
which prohibitionists Lav c not dared
even to attempt to close, but con
tinue to fight the shadow whilo
every logical medical man looks on
laughingly at their stupidity and folly.
We have no reason to look at the
Prohibition party but as a farced If
alcohol is the vile demon they say1 it is
why not legislate it out of use as a
medicine as well as a beverage. Why
is it a saint in medicine and a devil in
a beverage. Or why legislate against
it at all when its l substitutes which
stand ready to take its place are found
all around on every side many oi them
are ten fold rn,oro destructive to health,
morals and intellect and cause much of
the squalid poverty, crime and vice
which is unjustly laid to tho door of
alcoholic beverages. Better, by far,
have alcohol than such substitutes,
for of two evils we would choose the
least. . But there is no necessity of
choosing evilat all in this case. For
justice, science and humanity call
upon the Prohibitionists to lay their
platform broad and deep resting it up
on the principles of eternal truth. Let
them declare Prohibition against the
use as medicine as well as a beverage,
overv agent whose inherent character
is to narcotize, injure or destroy
any organ or tissue of tbe frame. This
Once accomplished, crime and vice
would diminish morality would advance
the number of suicides and insanities
would grow less year after year until
the family of man would be in a higher
state of physical, mental and moral
perfection than the world has ever yet
known. Temperance Max.

KING'S EVIL
Was the name formerly given to Scrofula
because of a superstition that it could be
cured by a king's touch. The world Is
wiser now, and knows that
SCKOFULA
can only be cured by a thorough pmifica
tion of tbe blood. If this is neglected,
the disease perpetuates its taint through
generation after generation. Among its
earlier symptomatic developments are "
Eczema, Cutaneous Eruptions, Tu
mors, Boils, Carbuncles, Erysipelas,
Purulent Ulcers, Nervous and Phy
sical Collapse, etc. If allowed to con
tinue, Rheumatism, Scrofulous Ca
tarrh, Kidney and Liver Diseases,
Tubercular Consumption, and vari
ous other dangerous or fatal maladies, are
produced by it.
Ayers Sarsaparilla
Is the only powerful and always reliable
blood-purifying medicine. It is so effect
ual an alterative that it eradicates from
the system Hereditary Scrofula, and
the kindred poisons of contagious diseases
and mercury. At the same time it en
riches and vitalizes tho blood, restorinj
healthful action to the vital organs and
rejuvenating the -entire system. This great
