1 ROSEBURG REVIEW FRIDAY, JANUARY, 29, 1886. VARIETIES. Tho different branches of Methodists in England report a net gain the past year of 5,041 members. . The consciousness of beins loved softens the keenest pang, even at the moment of parting; yea, even f he eter nal farewell is robbed of half its bitter ness when uttered in accents that breathe love to the last sigh. Addi son. A son of the late Bishop Wilber force, who is up for a; seat in Parlia ment, is credited with th following significant remark: "While establish ment may be to a particular Church a blessing unspeakable, no Church which could not stand without establishment is worth being established." Congratulatory Friend "Just ar rived from the Continent, eh? You are looking remarkably well. How long were you in ParisT' Returned Tourist ''About six weeks." "How did you manage? You can't talk French." "O, gestures went a great way. Sometimes I sketched what I wanted." "Made a drawing of it, eh? And you were always understood?" 'Well, not always. Onco I made a d-awinsr of a mushroom. Now. what djO you think the waiter brought me? The idiot brought me au umbrella." Philadelphia Call. Chief-Justice' Waite has worn out five satin robes since he first took his place on the Supreme bench. The political oven is beginning to boil, and those who feel that the offices are inadequate to the wants of the people should get in at once and see what their chances are to secure what few offices are now iu reach. In your last issue tinder the heading of Local Brevities, you give free gratis the following good advice to the cor-ling respondents of your paper." Some time Bince we made mention that we would not under any circumstances print any of this lovesick stuff that some write." Your correspondent and a host of patrons heartily endorse it A few ago I asked a gentleman if he was a patron of either of the Roseburg papers. He said "no sir: Too much local gossip; the papers should publish articles on the leading topics of the day and show up the resources of the county and Southern Oregon," like your paper of Jan. 8, in which you give an outline of that section of the country known as Douglas county, a paper that one can send to friends ana acquaintances. I A short time ago a gentleman called for a ticket from Tacoma, Washington Territory, to Myrtle Creek, Oregon. The agent gave him to undei stand that ho must be mistaken, as he did not know of a town on any rail road by that name. The party who wanted a ticket informed him that Myrtle Creek t I i : - ' ! irrTMii was a town long before Tacoma was thought of and that tho name of Myrtle Creek would be found on the O. fc C. R. R. and tho fare from Port land was $12.50 making a small mis take of $5.00. It seems to me that a civil service test wouli bo a good move for apro:ntinont3 of rail road agents. A few days ago the OiQgoniau pub lished the proceedings of the North PacOc Fruit Growers Association and gave an out-line of its proceedings. The .Willamette Farmer infoims us that the importance of fruit glowing in Oregon cannot be overestimated. California's revenue from this source is far more valuable than ever were her gold mines. The main difficulty heretofore has been, in this state in reaching a paying market. Once it becomes demonstrated that fruit crow iug will pay, the planting, improving, and care of orchards will follow as a matter of eouire. Every farmer will count as certainly upon the returns from his orchards as he now counts on his wheat returns; and we believe these returns will show a greater profit. It is a matter of gret moment to the farmers of this place and vicinity. We want to know when and where the fruit grower will hold their next meeting. The linest prunes in the world are grown here and as tor quali ty and quantity cannot be excelled; the kind of fruit dryers is a nififrm- nf importance and instruments for prun- ! ing the trees can with benefit, be brought up at the next association. We havo a fine climate, free from bliz- J zards, clyclones, grass-hopcrs, etc., etc. Mr. Jacob J. Chadwick completes the killing cf his hogs today making about 1G0. Last Sunday Rev. M. A. Williams preached here, tatin" foi his subject the history of the Recabitcs, and niak- tho application to our own day and nation. He first, after giving a brief history of their origin spoke of their adherence to the principles of their fathers showing the power of parental influence, then the blessings attending filial obedience, he then took up the subject of total abstinence from intoxi eating drinks and showed conclusively that the prohibitory movement in the United States was a move in the risrht direction showing that the use of in toxicants was largely the cause of our county indebtedness or the most of our criminal cases are attributable to that source, and that the saloon must be closed in order to save us from such exorbitant taxes, he then spoke of the fearful havoc being made among our yonng men by the use of liquor and smoking, refering to the number of young men that f have been rejected by the examining board, who have ap- plied for admission into the naval school, and the majority of those prs- ent felt like saying Amen, U"0. Robust Health Is not always entoyca by those who seem to possess it. The tamt of corrupted blood may be secretly undermininK tho constitution. In time, the poison will cer tainly Bhow its effects, and with all the more virulence the longer it has been allowed to permeate the system. Each pimple, sty, boil, skin disorder and sense of unnatural lassitude, or languor, is one of Nature's warnings of the consequences of neglect. Ayer's Sarsaparilla Is the only remedy that can be relied upon, In all cases, to eradicate the taint of hered itary disease and the special corruptions ?.f Qe L00' 11 ls the ony alterative that is sufficiently powerful to thoroughly cleanse the system of Scrofulous and Mercurial impurities and the pollution of Contagious Diseases. It also neu tralizes the poisons left by Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever, and enables rapid recuperation from the cnfeeblement and debility caused by these diseases. Myriads of Cures Achieved by Ayer's Sarsaparilla, in the past forty years, are attested, and there is no blood disease, at all possible of cure, that will not yield to it. Whatever the ailments of this class, and wherever found, from the scurvy of the Arctic circle to the "veldt-sores" of South Africa, this rem edy has afforded health to the sufferers by whom it was employed. Druggists evcrywherecan cite numerous cases, with in their personal knowledge, of remark able cures wrought by it, where all other treatment had been unavailing. People will do well to Trust Nothing Else than Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Numerous crude mixtures are offered to the public as "blood purifiers," which only allure the patient with the pretense of manv cheap doses, and with which it is folly to experiment while disease is steadily be coming more deep-seated and difficult of cure. Some of these mixtures do much lasting harm. Bear in mind that the only medicine that can radically purify the vitiated blood is Ayer's Sarsaparilla, PREPARED BY Dr. J. C. Ayer & Co., Lowell, Mass.
