The Aud it nee Listened, in 1'crfeet silence.
The 13th of last April the Medical
Department of the Willamette Univer
sity met in Taylor street Church Port
land Oregon, when the graduating ex
ercises took place. The commence
ment address was delivered by Hon.
Geo. H. "Williams, the degrees confered
by pi of. E. P. Frascr M. D. Dean of
the Faculty,- and the Charge to the
graduates was given by James Brown
M. D. L.L. D. This charge is so re
plete in suggestions of the highest or
der t8 persons of culture in any pro
fession in life, and so erudite in ex
pression that wo prevailed upon Dr.
Bi owne to ailow us to publish it en
tire. Many of the Dr's. old frieuds
in this City will read this charge with
a relish that we always received his
productions.
Members of the Graduating Class:
The tie that has
bound U3 together as Teacher and Stu
dents is about to be severed, and we
shall meet in the lecture room no more
Having completed the courso cf study
prescribed by the Willamette Univer
sity, and complied with all the conditions
and requirements of that institution
you have received as your reward the
degree of Doctor of Medicine, with
all the rights and privileges pertaining
to that distinction. In the name 6'
my colleagues of the Faculty, I con
gratulate yoa on the attainment of this
honor, and welcome you as co-laborers
in the field of Medical Science; and in
their name and at their request I add
to this congratulation a few words of
parting advice.
In the infancy of Medicine, Physi
cians stcod upon a higher plane than
that of other men. In thoso days
they were the ministers of Religion
the priests of the temple; and they were
initiated into the myteries of their
calling with the most imposing cere
monies and the most Bolemn obligations.
They bore the name of Magi Hakim
or Wise Men; and their wisdom vener
ated as part of the wisdom of the
Creator himself. . They were believed
to be inspired 'and to be gifted with
the power of reading human destiny
from the stare of the firmament. Iheir
endowment and gifts were believed to
transcend the endowments and gifts o:
other men. Appolonius by a touch
could heal the sick and cast out de
mons: iEsculapius could restore dead
men to life. Orpheus entered the
realms of Pluto, and by means of his
golden shell arrested the punishment
of Ixion and Tantalus and Tityos and
the Daniad Sisters; and then trium
phantly brought back his wife Eury
dice from the shades.
But in the light of modern science
the superstitions of the past have
melted away, and the members of our
profession, divested of their miraculous
endowments have to bo satisfied with
a plane not higher than that of other
men. The civilation of today demands
that the physician shall be indeed andj
in truth the priest of natare and the
interpreter of nature to mankind de i
mands that he shall be master of his'
profession, and that without the aid of
magic or miracle he shall know how to
, prescribe for the ills of the body and
how to minister to a mind diseased.
The profession of Medicine is a
grand and noble profession: it is a
mission, of benevolence for the allevia
tion of suffering and the saving oflife
it is a mission of mercy, and like the
quality of mercy, it is twice blest
blessing both him that gives and bin
that receives: a grand profession in
deed, but laborious beyond all others
The physician's strength and power o
endurance are taxed to the utmost;
and the price that he pays for success
is irregular hours, and broken rest an(
constant toil.
In entering upon this profession i ;
is your duty to accept its requirements,
and to consider well its onerous duties
and grave responsibilities. In being
admitted to it you incur a solemn oblij-
gation to do all in your power to iuain
tain its dignity, to exalt its standing
and extend its usefulness.
Investiture with the degree of Doc
tor of Medicine ought not to mark the
e topping-place of your studies: on the
contrary it should act as an incentive
to further and deeper investigation.
Remember that as yet you are but
neophytes standing in the vestibule f
the temple and that only after earnest'
eflort and patient toil, you Bhall be
qualified to enter the inner shrine.
Your present attainments although
creditable, must be regarded as a mere
beginoing-asa nucleus to be enlarged by
daily accretions. Seek information frota
every source. Extend your observa
tion iuto every field that thought can
enter. Study carefully everything cal
culated to make you more efficient
practitoners. Accept truth from any
. and every quarter. Receive it gra
f nllv na well frnm the unlettered labor
er as from the learned sage. The civil
izationof today will accept nothing
less than all that a Physician
know. Then acquire knowledge and
treasure up experience; for knowledjge
is power, and experience alone can teach
you how to use that power with sue
the knowledge that holds good in
working, cleave ye to that"
In difficult cases or in cases which
you do not fully understand, do not j
hesitate to ask the advice of a profes
sional brother. No two men pursue
precisely the same line of study, and
what you do not know, some one else,
rom special study, may thoroughly
understand. Under such circum
stances it is better to acknowledge our
gnoranco than tamper with the affairs
of life and death.
In the practice of your profession
you will be brought into the most in
timate i elation with the families of
your patrons: xou will be entrusted
by ithem with private matters that are
neyer alluded tc outside of the family
circle; you will lo made the depositaries
secrets the disclosure of which
would cause unspeakable mortification
and distress. Need I say to you that
professional duty, no less than personal
honor, demands that as to these things
your lips must bo forever sealedl
Some surgeons, and even some Phy
sicians, like to imitate the brusque-
uess and abruptness of Abernelte . Be
not of this class. Good manners are
not incompalablo with great skill.
Perform your professional duties with
dignity and gentleness. Let not daily
amiliarity with suffering blunt your
sensibilities or harden your heart. It
i$ your vocation to staunch the bleed
ing wound, to quench the fever's fire,
to soothe the thiobbinjj head and calm
the laboring heart. Magnify that
vocation by every eflort. peak
pleasantly to the sick, and let your
presence in their chamber be to them
S3 the sunshine. And when, as may
riot infrequently happen, it shall be
your lot to mingle in scenes of sorrow
and watch with unavailing regret the
progress of a malady that no skill can
relieve, you can at least minister com
fort and hope; and in addition to . the
anodyne for the suffering body, you
can offer the anodyne of soothing
words to the drooping spirit.
In your career as Physicians you will
!e called upon to act in various capac
ties: as advisers of legal tribunals in
he administration of justice, as super-
Intendants of asylums for the insane,
is supervisors of the sanitary condi
tions of armies and navies and cities
and nations: And if you are to act in
ihese capacities, if you are to sustain
such relations to society and to the
state, you ought by every feeling of
duty to be incited to activity and use
fulness you ought to be learned, discreet
.and wise, and blamclcssin life and char-
acter. . xou owe it to yourselves and to
the community in which your lot may
jbe cast, to attain to a high standard of
moral excellence. Without this vou
need not hope to win that confidence
anareS,w1Cu,Uepnsntpoy8ician
never fails lo inspire. Then let scien-
tific attainments and professional skill
be supplemented by a blameless life
and an exemplary walk and conversa
tion. Let not the flavor of tho wine-cup
tempt yon, nor the devotees of Bacchus
entice you into their circle. 'Touch
not, taste not, Landle not; for your's is
a profession the duties of which re
quires a keen eye, a clear head and a
steady hand.
Remember kindly your Alma Mater.
With her welfaro and reputation your

interblended. Render back to her
something for what she has done for
you-somcthing in the sbape of brilliant
literary effort, or distinguished profes
sional success. She will watch your
career with a parent's solicitude,
pleased and proud if you succed, de
pressed and humiliated if you fail.
Be just to your brethren of the pro-
fessicn; protect their reputation as you
part towards the removal of the jeal
ousies and ungenerous rivalries that
not infrequently disgrace our profes
sion. Do what m you lies to Hasten
