At tho Medford town election held
on Monday last 125 votes were cost
and the following cendidates elected:

274 convicts. During 1885, 138 were

Hon. Binger Hermann writes to
Win. Steel, of Portland, that several
prominent people at Washington have
taken an interest in the project having
Crater lake set aside as a national
park,. and that he has enlisted Prof.
Dillon of the United States geological
survey, who is acquainted with the
Crater lake country, who will do all
he can to aid the scheme.
Cur County Judge and Commission
, crs have never lost an opportunity to
reduce the expenses of the county, and
haye therefore succeeded in stopping
many leaks. But for the heavy run of
criminal business that has obtained
throughout their term,a material reduc
tion in the county debt would have
taken place. Their solicitude for the
interests of tho Deorjle has nevertheless
been productive of good results and
their efforts are worthy of the highest
commendation. Times.
Hon. W. Lair Hill has declined the
judgeship of the seventh district Wo
learn that a petition for the appoint
ment of Mr. Pierce Mays has been
laid before the govenor. It bears the
signature of all tho members of the bar
of the district, save - one, and ho was
absent when the petition was circulated
Mr. Mays is a conscientious, compe
tent and worthy young man, and we
believe that if appointed ho will do
credit to himself and to the state.
The Timber Gulch Mining Co. have

The dead body of John C. Good
win, an old hermit, who lived for near
ly ten years in a hut all alone on tho
macadam road, near Portland, was dis
covered Thursday near his hut behind
a fence. It is thought that rheumatic
gout or heart disease caused bis death.
:l - n i . . m . . .
He was 65 years old, and has relatives
in South Berwick, Maine, and is re
ported having a wealthy brother in
Colorado. Nothing but a few empty
bottles, an old bed, and a few valueless
articles of household goods were found
in his hut. Statesman.
Mr. Nasburg recently planted a bed
of asparagus near his residence on the
hill at this place, and his partner,
Mr. Hirst, raised this year as fine a
row of celery as ever California pro
duced. Now it seems to us that if
some of the fanners of this county,in
addition to spuds and cabbage, would
raise asparagus, celery, sccale, cauli
flower, brussel sprouts, and such other
vegetables, which at present are
brought from California by the Cbin
nese merchants to supply the market
here, they would havo more money at
the end of tho year, and the town folks
could get something fresh to eat once
in awhile. Coos Bay News. j
The richest man of the next House
is now at Washington. His name
is William L. Scott. He is a demo
crat from Erie, Pennsylvania, and is
itaid to be worth $12,000,000. He is a
well formed fellow of medium size, not
over forty-five years of age, and he
carries about him the general air of a
good business man. " He has made his
own money, and it has not turned him
into a snob. . Ho is very popular
Among his friends, and is known as es
pecially fond of horses. When Scott
, was there 'as a paga Henry Clay was
still in the Senate, - Daniel Webster
was in his prime, John C. Calhoun
had yet many years to live.

It is a good sign that the Negro in
certain Southern States Georgia no

Whiskey and the negro cannot get

. It is said that capital is seeking in

not strange; the less of whiskey, the

King John of England when re
fused 10,000 marks by a Jew, ordered
one of his teeth to be drawn every day
until he consented. When he had lost
seven of his teeth, the Jew yielded.
Hence arose the saying, "In spite of
bis teeth," to do any thing contrary to
a fixed purpose.
The Georgia Baptist, one of the pa
pers published and edited by our col

double-coJumn advertisement of "Anti
Curl," a preparation for "kinky, curly,

in this section a different taste exists.

5 An ignorant fellow who was afraid
to get married resolved to make him
selfperfect in the responses of the
marriage service, but by mistake, he
committed the office of babtism for those
of riper years; so when the clergyman
asked him in the church, "wilt thou
have this woman to bo thy wedded
wife" the "bridegood answered in a
very solemn tone, "I renounce them
all" the astonished minister said, "I
think you are a fool" to which he re
plied" "all this I steadfastly believe."
The Astorian, which has about as

'The wind to day will blow from the

falls we will have falling weather; if it
goes up, the weather will trump or

There are two kinds of girls, says
the home visitor: "One is the kind
that appears best abroad the girls
that are good for parties, rides, visits,
balls, etc., and whose chjef delight is
in such things. Tne other is the kind
that appears best at home the
girls that are useful and cheerful in
the dining-room, sick-room, and all the
precinis of home. They differ widely

at homo, the other a blessing; one is a
moth, consuming every thing about
her; the other is a sunbeam, inspiring
light gladness. all around her pathway.
To which of these classes do you be

About eight men suffer from nasal
catarrh where one woman is a victim.
One reason for this difference is that
men keep their heads in a sensitive
condition from the moisture and heat
of the hat. A man with a vital con
stitution walks into the garden with
his delicate wife. They both start
bare-headed, but he stops and runs
back to the house to get his hat lest
he take cold, while his dalicate wife
goes on without the slightest fear.
A man cannot wear his hat all the
time, for he must take it off when he
eats and when he sleeps. ! The differ

tho hat and a well ventilated room

KING'S EVIL
Was the name formerly given to Scrofula
because of a superstition tbat it could be
cured by a king's touch. The world Is
wiser now, and knows that
SCROFULA
can only be cured by a thorough purifica
tion of the blood. If this is neglected,
the disease perpetuates its taint through
generation after generation. Among Its
earlier symptomatic developments are
Eczema, Cutaneous Eruptions, Tu
mors, Boils. Carbuncles, Erysipelas.
Purulent Ulcers, Nervous and Phy

It the only powerful and dvoam reliable
Moed-purifying niedicine. It Is so effect
ual an alterative that it eradicates from
the system Hereditary Scrofula, and
the kindred poisons of contagious diseases
and mercury. At the same time it en
riches and vitalizes the blood, restoring
healthful action to the vital organs and
rejuvenating the entire system. This great
Regenerative r.ledicina
Is composed of the genuine Hondums
Sarsaparilla, with Yellow Dock, Mil
Ungia, the Iodides of Potassium and
Iron, and other ingredients of great po
tency, carefully and scientifically com
pounded. Its formula is generally known
to the medical profession, and the best
physicians constantly prescribe Aran's
Sarsaparilla as an
Absolute Cure
For all diseases caused by the vitiation ot
the blood. It is concentrated to the high
est practicable degree, far beyond any
other preparation for which liko effects
are claimed, and is therefore the cheapest,
as well as the best blood purifying medi
