Jtnown throughout the State not only
as a teacher but as .t man well quali

XJes&fully the important trust placed in
his hands. The mms of the excellent
.corps of teachers employed is h suSi
.cient guarantee that iJosrburg will lave
pne of the tw st appointed, bt st nai:
jiged, and the most suitable institution
in. the state in which to educate their
.children, eveiy person who has the wel

their utmost to encourage a!i,iiist.itiuiun

All this together with our beautiful
scenery and climate would make Rose

State in which to live long and die hap

all this and mote.
Schools have always been in the train

Editor Review Knowing that you
hate the best imie-t of our State at
heart and juuin front articles that
app?ar in the liEYiEW frow week to
week. I ask ycu iti common with
every Other journal in the State to use
your best influence in trying to arouse
pur capit.aU.-its t ths g.-e it importance
.of starting home manufactures within
ourboicWs. To persons w hohavegiven
this subject little thought it rnav seem
unimportant and yet it is the only rem
edy that will bring us permanent pros
perity. Change of administration
however well advised will not do it.
Appropriations for our rivets and hu
bors however thsirable will not do it.
Itelief bills tnd railroad charters how
ever good in '"'their place will not do it.
Local legislation can afford onl v tempo
rary relief. J ust so lougas M e are yearly
paying out more money than we are
' receiving just sq long we will be grow
ing poorer and poorer. Home manu
factory and home institutions must be
instituted, patronised and sustained
or our permanent prosperity will never
be sustained. Is it r:o so? C. A. R.
Portland August 25th 1885.
A. Crosa-iratk,
The following letter has been re
ceived by the Editor of the IIeview
and as it is a matter of general intertst
relating to the crosswalk leading to
the Uirpqua bridge, which we advo-;
catedj in the columns of the Heview
and "ilso interviewed Mr. Koehler in
?ts interest. The railroad company
has most generously agreed to erect
same at its own expense, but read the
letter.
Mr. J. R. N. TIell, D.-ar Sir: I huve
ponsiden'd the matter in regav.l to
which you approached me when I last
saw you at Roseburg and have coticln
ded to meet your wi.-hes in the f -.IIjwv
ing way. We will ut our own ex
pense put in a suitable crossing, made
cf oVl stringers of surlitit-nt width and
length. Jlr. Rraniit, CJeneral Supt.,
will come up within a week, and he
wil telegraph you to bn present when
lie gives the instrnetions to Supt. ot'
bridges, Mr. J' hns ni and I wish you
then to" suggest to him again the man
ner in which you desire to have a cross
ing located. Trusting this will be
satisfactory, I remain, yours tn-dy,

Dear Review: I am very much
pleased that the suggestion 1 made in
regard to the formation of a PERMA
NENT literary so -ieiy m lioseburg lias
met such popular ppi oval and endorse
ment. All that is neoes's u y now- is to'
call the meeting form the association
pn a solid basis, eiect to the cilices
not figureheads but active and earnest
ivbrkers. The oiganization should be
Vade at once so as to lie well inaugu
rated fir the winter months, no
mistake be made but iha organization
firmly m ule a-id with th detennin uion
to make it the grandest success in Ore
gon. Katie.
