SSAIrfS BOSEBURG REVIEW. FRIDAY, .JULY 10, 1SS5. Notice. All persons rsceiviug A sain le copy of the Rkview' will please consider it an invitation to become a subscriber and Bend their names atcordiotfly. A PLAIN STATiMEST. In the matter o the extra session cf the Legislature tUere is but one ques tion before the people and that is the Senatorship. In other words if the last Legislature had elected a United States Senator there would be nc one who would wish an extra session. This is a fair, straight-forward statement and will not be " contradicted. All argu ments based upon any other grounds are frivolou?, hypocritical, uncalled for and unworthy of notice. -Ft-r instance the license law has not be en tested in our courts and has now been in ojra tionsome months. It will be neenss;iry for it to be declared unconstitutional or , inoperative before it can be used as a lever to hoist a Republican into the C? Tk. "Ditr.m U.. .-si ociiiibc. iiiu xi.vjctv una iit&cu nil honest and broad view of this whole ag itation. It stands upon the ground that the people do hot wish to pay some $30,000 for a .Republican Senator when they could enjoy that luxury for noth ing if tho-Governor would appoint. And what assurance have we that a Senator would be elected. Prominent Rrpublicans including several members of the Legislature have ex j tressed through the public prints and other wise the opinion that there is as much diveisity now as ever. "We are per fectly candid in this matter and think that ;the people should have a chance to settle at whe .polls next June. '-And further, if anjthinj should arise by which wo would think that the pt oph .will be benefited by an extra session we will advocate it, but a long a the Sen atorship is all a $30,000 bauble as it were wo want the matter to so befoie the people-where it belongs. MEAN! The ungenerous and reprehensible insinuation made about Hon. L. F. Lane of Roseburg in last Friday's Ore gonion July the 3rd. is tne of the most unnecessary utterances that we have Been in that pa.per for some time. Mr.' Lane is a private citizen and not a public officer, and is therefore not ;amenablo to the Oregonion for his pri- .vato acts. That paper however, has assumed the right it seemp, to drng the short-comings of public officers (if they be democrats)as well 'as private citizens liefore the public gaze and cast scuiril lous inuendoes without cause or prov ocation. We have this to say, that the Gentleman (?) who made that refer ence to Mr. Lane would scarcely allow himself to be known in these parts without art apology. The "Southern Confederacy" seems to be running this government very .well after all, but according to the the ory of H. W. Scott, President Cleve land has followed his immediate prede cessors in all that he does, hence his .success. At any rate he is doing it much better than was anticipated by some people, and we ought to all rejoice in common, because we have sueh a sol id government, that it mattetsbut little who wears the crown or weilds the scep tre. The Oregonian and New? are having a lively argument over so-csdled "Bogus Journalism." The truth of the matter is that the pluck, vim and energy back ing the news is begiuing to teli and the Oregonian is suffering in consequence. All parties who desire to get rid of the thraldom of the Oregonian in its mono poly of the telegraphic news can not do better than tosubscribe for the Port land Daily News. The progress it has made in the year past show s that it is to be the great piper of the State. In its continued and most unwarren ed attacks upon Mr. Floed The Oregon, ion takes occasion to refer to Mr. Sol. Abraham, his father-in-law. This is worthy the rank venom of a wretched viper in dog days. Mr. Abraham is a private citizen and minds his own busi ness. Whether he is Republican or Democrat is immaterial. It is quite evident he does not wear ITarvy Scott's collar, and that's what accounts for the milk in the Cocoa-nut. Let the people decide , whether the next Unite 1 States Senator 'from Os e- gor shall be a Democrat or a RepnMi- can. No honest man can object to this proposition. Let the people rule. Do not circumvent the ballot box, either by the "shot gun," technicality, or trick ery. Why should the Corvallis Gazette and some other Republican papers try to pull the wool over the eyes of the people in regard to an extra session o the Legislature, by discussing issues bat are not germane. Be, honest, and say the Senator is the question, "simply this, and nothing more. A Band Stand Roseburg is justly proud of the Yankee Doodle Band, which has gained a state-wide reputation as a leading Band of musicians. It is composed of oer twenty of our citizens, most of them young men: and from the benn- ning of its otganiziion its motto has been excelsior. At no time has it op- pealed to the public for assistance, but with characteristic manliness and In- dejendence, its members have gone into their own pockets, purchased their own instruments, including a fine up right piano and 'al-jo outfitted them- sefves with a neat and tasty uniform. Besides this they have a ball reuted for practising and a regularly enndoyed professional teacher at fifty dollars; a month. . From this st.'methinp; can be judgedof the expense the ge itlemen have sjbne to, to perfect themserves in lheir, piotes.sion and to become a pride to our citv. . . We now wish to inform our citizens that it is time that we show the Band that its coui-se has b. en watched and approved. That we all, iinlii iduah and collect ively appreciate their etibrts and are willing , to do something our selves in behalf of our citv. To come biir fly to the point, a stand should be erected and presented to the Band," wnere they could discourse sweet music for the edification of the public . It should be a neat structure, say oetgon-sh.iped, with raihnir, roof, suiall, $ag-sta!i' and prettily painted. We presume the proper authorities would allow it to be erected in t'ua Court house square. A proper stnu-t tire would Y-ose not; mure than 250. A lady friend has suggested that the Review take the matter in hand and push it to . completion. We will be pleased to do what we ean in th mat ter and hoe tc be as successful as the NewYoik Wo i Id in iai.sin; funds for the Bor'holU pedestal. The Woild raised $ 1 00,000 a id headed th- list with the. 100-part thereof, $1,000. The Review wishfs $250 for this objeit and gives the 1C0. part thereof, $2 f0. Remember that 'this is a citizens move ment and that the Band his in no way been consulted. The fo -lowing names and amounts were received without any solicit ttinn but simply by a caus ual mention of the undertaking. Roseburg Review, 2 50; II. Parry, $1 00; E. F. Let us see u mere is not; a aisease some v here located in the body economic. Our own opinion is that about two or three years ago we were dancing all the while, and now we have to pay the tid- ller, and that is about all there is cf it. We went beyond our income and looked to the future to settle our bills, and. the future thou, has become the present now, hence the wail. There have leen jood crops, no prevailing epidemics among stock, .nd while it is true that wheat and wool have not brought a big rice, they always command money at some price and generally a fair one. The great mistake was, the people went n d-bt on tho principle of a dollar a bushel for wheat and twenty-five cents pound for wool. If the war had con tinued in Europe, we would have gone bevond our income agiin, and the pay. uent of our debts would thu-i have only been postponed, i:ot paid. One hundred thousand dol lar. was the sum which the World star ted out to collect. It believed it could get it by appealing to the pe ple for small sums. The result has justified its faith. Only a newspaper of big circula tion and intense vitality could do it. Answer this question, if a Senator had been elected at the last Legislature, would you now favor the extra session? Answer up, or'lint up. 30,000 offered by certain papers for United States Senator for Oregon, THE P0U3JTH AT E0SEBU&G- The . Natal Day Celebrated in Grand and Becoming Style. And sure enough as had . been pre- ; dieted and desired the" sun rose that memorable morning without a rdoud to dim its radiance or a blast from bo re a to mellow its glinting heat, henca every body got hot, and kept hot all day, and until the I twinkling sentinels of the sky stepped out upon the edge of hea ven's port h and argued with the young man and maiden that Sunday logins at midnight in the Christian era. the Y. D. rnd opened the day's proceed ings by giving forth dulcet strains at the cowrt bouse about 9 o'clock, 'A, M. the crowd gathered, that, had come from hill and dale. The liberty car w-rTs well replenished with little girls, officers of the day, seated in a enrriage, then the famous Bycyclist lead the way, and by the assistance of ih" mar shalls kept the way clear for the pa geantry that followed ini carriages,, buggies, hack', dogcarts, on horseback and afoot until we airived at the grove when the-President of the day Hon. D. S. K. Buick ordered the programme canind Out, prayer by the chaplain, tending of the Declaration of Indepen dence by M jor Wulch, and then the Orator of the day lion. J. C. Fullerton whs introduced, antl he proceeded to crivfe us ore of the best orations we have ever had. To touch the de'icale points of our nation's past history as he. did, and eolye arguments and rea sons for its present state of prsoperity, without giving offence was the work of a master hand. We might say much of the getith man's tine oration and would hav published it if we could have got his consent, but to be brief the speech breathed a piop-r spirit, a spirit of harmony and pmr-sSi After the close of the Oration, three cheers were lutily given for the perfornsa?ice of the whol- programme, a id the Yan kee Doole Band in p irti u'ar. The s-ction bos-", or the railroad at Dillard's here co eluded that he mu-t speak al thoinih h was not down o-i the list, mounted the rostrum, and told us of many things of which we had heard. All these exercises were interspers- d with patriotic Selections by the band. Dinner, if-ecream and candy came next. In the afternoon came the horse race, One young man was' tin own wlien his Ijorse flew the track and somewhat bruised. Foot racing ar.d :lus ball shooting occupied the remainder of the afternoon. A g od sprinkling of growling was done, because no water that was tit to di ink could be had. This matter ought t- be look after, here after. Tints closed the glorious fourth of July in Ro.seburg. Hip h'p hurrah. Tiger WHY? Editor Review: I, the most humble of cit'zens of Douglas county, want no office and have no ax o grind, but I would like to know why Gov. Moody should call an extra cession of the Legislature to do the work that we sent them to do. They were in session forty chiys and forty nights and did nothing that in of any importance and why call these same fellows together again. Davenpo t says his crowd waa right, and the la' an.ee say they were right, Tliev did the best they knew and it is of no us to gt them together again. Let the Governor appoint a. Senator a good one. There is lots 'of eomp'-triiu men: ex-Governor Gihbs, Judge Kelsay or E. G. Hursli, the latter of Rosebuig. May be some other locality might furn ish a man fori the Senate. : Ke could be a Senator just as well if he isn't worth 100,000, as if he were. We want a square deal and no jobbery in ours; G. W. G.
