An excellent piograninie is be;ng

lecturers from ocr colleges and leading
public schools will be present and take
part in the exercises of the Association.
Every effort will be made to make each

Arrangements have been made by
which all persona attending the Associ
ation and paying full fare over the East
and West Side Divisions of the Oregon
and California Railway to Portland, i
will bo entitled to return tickets at
eighty (SO) per cent off from regular
fare to destination. '-
Arrangements have been made with
the Oregon Bail way and Navigation
Company for excursion rates - of-two
dollars and fifty cents (2.50) per person
ft om Portland to Astoria and return. -
The Oregon Railway and Navigation
Company's excursion Ssmamers will

By special arrangement, the return

This will enable persons from differ

Association to remaiu and visit the sea
coast if they so desire.
Thursday, July 9th, will be devoted
to excursions to Fort Stevens, Port
iJanby, liweco, Aoungs iliver Jballs
and other points of interest. For this
purpose arrangements have been made
with Captain J. II. D. Gray, of the
Ilwaco Steam Navigation Company, to
furnish transportation ou that compa
ny's steameis.
The leading hotels in Astoria will
make liberal reductions, and the hos
pitable citmm3 of that city have ar
ranged to entertain the visiting teach
ers during the days of the Association.
E. B. McElr'oy,
Superintendent of Publiclnstruction.
An extra session of the Legislature
would cost a great deal of money. The
eople are worried by hard times and
tired of being taxed. Let the Governor
do the people simple justice in the mat
ter and appoint a senator If he does
otherwise he simply defies the will of
the people becomes extravagani with
the people's money all for the sake of
a littlo partisan advantage. We hardly
bcliave Gov. Moody can be such a par
tisan as this would indicate. "
California is glutted with fruit,.and
the papers are calling a halt on the
planting of new orchards or further
production. The crchardists find a lim
ited market, and the surplus of canned
goods on hand from last year causes
many of the'eanueries to exercise cau
tion in the business. The outlook "s
hot good in California for fruit raisers,
and all through over production.
Salem Statesman: The session laws
have just been completed and are now
. jn the binder's hands. They . contain
over 600 pages and aro the largest ever
issued in Oregon.' Also the rules and
vamilf mna i n-l.-v.Wit.r. pi-... . .. i. 1 ...... .
from the Peui'entiary were issued this
week in pamphlet form, by the Gover
nor's Advisory Committee.
Great pressure from the East is be
ing brought to bear upon Gov. Moody
concerning yio. convening of an extra
session of the Legislature. Lot the
Governor stiffeu hu ' back, appoint a
senator and s ive tha people many
thousands ot dollars. He is warned
in time. Lit him be wise and refuse
to obey the party lash. .
Ilonesty is always tho best policy.
Let the Governor appoint a U". S. Sen
ator and then let the matter go before
the people two years hence. This
would ba honest, economical and rhht.
The people of Oiegon deniiind; to be
heard uj on this matter.
The sentiment of -the people of
Pouglas county is against an extra ses
iiioil of the Legislature and they wudi
the Governor to know ir.

On the afternoon of last Wednesday

and was rawed in this city. Death; is
sad and sorrowful at all times but in
this instance the word sounds more
than ordinarily., mournful. It ia too
often the custom of newspapers to pub

cess of merit, but of the youth just gone
from among us forever none but words
of goodness and love can truthfully be
spoken. His childhood was of amia
bility and gentleness, Lis youth and
approach to man's estate was character
ized by fine sense, high honor-and a
true spirit of manhood. By the ma
ture in years he was observed and
admired, to . his companions he was
endeared and by his parents and imme
diate friends he was deeply- beloved
fie was a member of the Brass Baud of
this city ' and though the youngest of
their number was the first to passaway,
Death has created a void in their ranks
and hearts, and the latter can never be
tilled. His young life was simple, art
less and pure. , To his bereaved patents
