ROSEBURG REVIEW FRIDAY, MAY 8, 18S5. " . . '" , r7,'"--S!g Miss Cleveland's Appeal to Girls- Mr. Stearns of the National Temper ance Society and Publication House, has shown us a copy of the Youth's Tempirance Banner, for February. 11, 1882, in which is the following beauti ful article for young girls, by Elizabeth CUveland. It is certainly" somethii-g wonderful in the ways of Divine Prov idence thac a lady of such excellent Christian temperance principles, and experience as a teacher, should be raised to preside in the Presidential Mansion, and doubtless from thence to exeit a .purifying influence, as in the case of Mrs. liases, over the whole land. The following is the article; , ANCE WORK. J. G. Holland wrote in Mrs. Hayes' album these words: "Women only can j tactic iiivi-v4iiun.iii iiiiiaouiiMi&iiSJfy aiiu heal the Nation of this curse." What did Dr. Holland mean by "wo men only 1" Is it tine that only wo men can make wine drinking unfash ionable and heal the Nation of this foe You and I need to ki.ow first; be cause if only we women can do this thing, why it is an awful responsibility upon us, each one of us. And it some body else can do it, we, like all the oth ers, would like to give that somebody lse the job.; it ive vears ago, at Wash ington, Mrs. Hayes became imsvess of the White Hous;j, and it was for her, and no one eis to say what the social atmosphere should be which surrounded her cjuestp, and how they should be en tertained at her house. Well, she did an unheard of thing. She banished wine from all her entertainments, 'with just one exception. Secretary Evarts made a fuss. He was mortified. He could not endure to have Lord and Lady English, Count and Countess French, Baron and Baroness '.German, ' come to the White House dinners and have nothing fitforthem todiink not a drop of poisVm! It was too utteily queer! So Mrs. Hayes made one ex. caption in favor of those great foreign highnesses, and allowed wine upon her tuble in their presence. But only for once. Her conscience high-souled woman that she is! smote hei for that one little cowardly compromise, with wrong. She could better endure to have Secretary Evarts and the Smiths ashamed of her, than to be ashamed of herself. So she quietly and forever after prohibited wine from her table, and cheerfully endured the lifted eye brows and shrugged shoulders of the diplomatics, British, French, ltusian all, and the little short-lived hiss of 4fhi nimbi " ROnt.r. until fli.tr liixs turned to a cheer, and fashionable so il 'tytnr n-d round, like thtspauiel it if, and trotted on 'behind its mistress. It became unfashionable to serve wine and to .'oiler wine wbile Mrs. Hayes was in the White House. What Mrs. Hayes - did in the White House every woman can do in her own nomf u sue whi. xi cue jnna wno read these words will each of them, all together use their influence on the Ride of temperance, .they" can make temperance fashionable where they are. Will yon do it) Gmerrl Grant does a manly thing in refusing to drink wine every where and iik mi ovsi'it.vj J v jo ct vii uiau n iiu vtlll x. ma moo 1 1 j c? i u down in ihis esse risrlit side up tool -while all the grand people around him are sipping champagne and toast ing etch 'Other in sparkling driuks. vr. i. i 1 jic . xi . -. ' 'Xu ont? ir.ui ten now iur una uiuo ciiu- die slwdsits light." But no man can do for a fashion in society what a wo man can. It is women only, as Dr. Holland said. I wish some strong, brurht an jrel utood btfjre you, just now, while you read, girls, to flash before you, as no words of mine can, the power you po.-i feess to help or to hinder the cmse of temperance; to make you feel your respcn-slbility, because yon are girls, in this matter; to shudder at its its weight and to never cease trying to fnllfil it! Doubtless you have heard a great deal about the value of your smiles; but do you know the value of your frowns J wish I could make you feel the value of your frowns and the importance of fc owing just what to frown upon. What a man must do by a blow a wo inu 11 pan fin bv a frown. When tne tin.e co.nes that the young man who now shares his time in your society and the saloon, who jokes about -1 temper ance in your presence, and takes a glass, socially, now and then; is made to feel that theser things cannot be if yon are to be his companion at party, ride, or church, that good societv can not tolerate these things in its mem hers; in short, that this kind of" man is unfashionable and unpopular, then alcohol will tremble on its throne, and the liquor-tiatlic will hide its cancellous face. v Inasmuch as our much respected CO temporary has taken so much pains to make a mountain out of a mole hill, by showing up a simple typographical error which appeared in our issue of April 2itb, we would state that our dear Bw. was as much mistaken as any one. By reference to the official records it will be st;en that at its last Bes-sion the legislature- passed Hons Bill No. 43, appropriating $10,000 for imn?gratiou: purposes. Bro. Bo gart and A. K. Oolburn, were relieved this week and their places supplied re spectively by Charles II. Carter, M. C. Webster and Charles W. Kline. Messrs. Carter and Kline have been baggage masters, and Mr. Webster was transferred from the east sida. No reason has been assigned for the change, and it is understood that the conductors were not informed of any cause for their dismissal." The. whole community here was much surprised to learn of the dis charge of men who had been in the employ of the company so long, and these same men having, by their ex perience in handling trains and pas sengers, aud their gentlemanly deport ment toward the traveling public se cured the confidence of all. It is regretted by every one that such an act became necessary, and is especially unsatisfactory because no explanation is given them. These were faithful servants. From Looking Glass We need rain.
