A SPEINGr DkY EIDE ET NATURE'S
GLOWLNG BEAUTY. SWEET MU
SIC AUD. GSABD 0EATI01I. - "
A SUMPTIOUS DINNER, GRAND
BALL AND GENEROUS
HOSPITALITY. '
Sunday morning in company with
many others we took our seat in a hack
and started for Canyonville 0 attend
the Odd Fellows celebration at that
place of the CGth anniversary of the or
ganization of American Odd Fellow
ship. It was pleasant to get out in
the open air aud behind a good team
to go over winding road over hill jnd
valley by rippling waters and spaik
ling streams. The suu shone with gen
tle rays and the wind caressed ns as 1
softly as a mother's kiss. Nature woro
her brightest gaib, her gentlest smile
and sweetest laugh, and spoke with im
pressive graudeur the eternal truths
that make the hearc swell with a touch
of the happiness ofciine inspiration
and surcharges the soul with sweet faith
as through Nature we hold closer com
munion with Nature's God. But who
has not enjoyed the peace, the sweet
repose of a spring day ride, taken as
a recreation, when all the world seems
so grand and life so real?
Heigh-ho! Dreaming again! , '
After several hours we arrived at
our;destination the advance guard of
the Roseburg delegation, which contin
ued to pour in until the shades of night
began to fall. We were well received
and were at once made to feel perfectly
at home. The Yankee Doodle Band
came in a solid body and stopped at
Myrtle Creek and discoursed sweet
music. At Canyonville in the evening
it furnished sacred music that harmon
ized so sweetly with "the surroundings
and added an impressive charm to4he
day.
Monday morning the sun rose in
richest splendor and the few clouds of
the day before were dispersed. At an
early hour "the band began to play"
ind the crowd to gather. Hon. D. S.
K. Buick," of Myrtle Creek, as Presi
dent of the day then formed the pro
cession, with the band to lead, .7 the
Douglas Lodge No. 14, 1. O. O. F. fol
lowed by the Rebekah Lodge, with the
visiting members next, all in proper
regain, and the citizens in general in
carriages snd afoot to bring up the rear.
The walk to the grove was pleasant,
and here had been made every arrange
ment for the comfort of all. Seats had
beeu prepared in the shade and a tasty
stand - erected. After prayer by Rev.
H. P. Webb, -the Opening Song;of the
Order was pleasantly snng. In a few
brief and pointed remarks President
Buick described the meaning of the
meeting, and in appropriate ter ins in
troduced as the speaker of the day,
Mrs. Mattie A. Bridge.
Mrs, Bridge said she had intended to
give her lecture on tha "Mission of Odd
Fellowship," but out of deference to
the visitors from Rouebuig, who had
heard that, she would deliver her hew
lecture, which she had just completed
and delivered for the first time at Ash
land. Although on the same general
plan, it excels the other in research,
power and artistic skill, and wo trust a
Roseburg audience will havo an oppor
tunity to hear this great effort We
can but say of this most talented and
gifted lady who ha 3 been called the
Queen of the American Rostrum that
on this occasion she fully justified the
claim. .
It was a pretty picture. One -that
will ever be kept green in the memory
of those' present. Beneath the over
arching sky of azure blue, with the
gtr.ndand lofty n.ountaii for a back
ground, there had been constructed out
of rude boards, covered with nature's
beauteous evergreens, " the i speaker's
stand. On all sides were the listening
throng held entranced by the magnet
ism, the beauty and the eloquence o
the orator, whose words of wit, pathos
and truth struck responsive chords in
the hearts of alL The young firs pro
tected us from the morning sun and
earth in ht r robes of green seemed like
I enchanted fairy land and when the
st eaker traced the the- historic lines o
man's advancement, of the great blood
less victory of Justice, Truth and Bight
over Selfishness, Wealth and Power,
thero could but come . to one and all a
fervent "Thank God? for the blessings
of this enlightened age, and when in
lofty periods-and glowing sentences
she showed that the eternal principles
of Odd Fellowship, unnamed and unor
ganized, had been the spring ' from
hich flowed this mighty river, we
began - to realize that that great .force
nOW tiiorougnly Organized and equipped
under the name of OddFellowship was
the greatest motive power in this rest,
less advancement,' in this resistless tor
rent that was sweeping all before- it
to lie down and worship at the thrbne
of the Good, the True and the Beauti
ful. . Thus carried on the current of her
eloquence, lost in her sublime sentences
wo realized the greatness of man and
the - wonderful capacity of Tiis soul;
and when she spoke of tho Fatherhood
of God and the Brotherhood of man
she seemed to raise herself above and
out of the worjdr and stood like some
Prophetic' Vision pointing out to inan
a new road through the pearly gates of
friendship, love and truth to all that
is worth living for and to all that one
could die for. Great was the day,
great was the theme butgreater and
adding a halo to all was the earnestness
of ihe magnificent woman whcqiRpoke
from tho rich fountain of ihetheart
such noble truths that lighted the spark
cf bope m every - heart, and whose
magic eloquence .made the whole world
kin.
After the Closing Ode and music
the crowd wended its way to theWor
ley -Hotel where a sumptuous and ele
gant dinner was served in an evergreen
arbor. The rest of tbe day was spent
in the usual sports and the discoursing
of sweetest strains by the far-famed
Yankee Doodle Band who won golden
opinions from all. Roseburg cannot
be too proud of this band, of Its music,"
aud of the young gentlemen who com
pose it.
At night was given the Grand Ball
and it was a magnificent affair. The
music was excellent, the calling perfect
the supper elegant, the ladies both beau
tiful and attractive and the gentlemen
polite and attentive. Thus passed tbe
time away and on Tuesday morning we
were again en route home having en
joyed ourselves thoroughly, and to the
fullest extent in sharing the geneious
hospitality of the 'citizens of Canyon
ville.'. V "ff."
