While we have faith in icpivsHive
temperance legislation only so far as it
' is sustained by public sentiment, there
are somo adautigeous features in the
movement to secure scientific temper
nco instruction in th e schools. In the
first place, all teachers will obliged
to study the subject and pass an exam
ination upon it before securing their
certificates. Then every' scholar will
hav to pass an examination on the
subject before passing to a higher grade.
Then, again, it will give young people
an intelligent idea of the consequences
of drinkbefore the taste has been ac
quired or the habit formed. The law
'.will bq ignored in many instances, be
made an occasion for teaching! false
views in others, but, if faithfully car

ism W hatever may bo said of the
master of the. White House, its mistress
will? not be an unworthy Eticcessoi to
ITanitt Lane, and the long line of
noble women who have honored that
pesition. The Evangelist gare at the
time a prief abstract of an address
which Miss. Cleveland made before the
Alumnae of Elmira Female College at
the Commencement in 1S82. The top.
ic was "Altruistic-Faith." Of all the
addresses given during the . quarter
of a cutiuy of the college by many of
our ablest men, such as Prof. Upson,
Dr. Woleott Calkins, Dr; Lyman Ah
bot and the editor of The Evangelist,
this was pronounced second to none of
them, .and for practical adaptation ' io
the young ladies, the : best. She ilus
traled her snbjact by Chadija, the wife
of Mahomet, who believetfin him when
nil men despised him, and whose faith
in him made him what he became.
Every one must have his Clmdija,
There is need of f. it h in God, fjit! in
self, and faith in humanitv. She
woulu be hopeful, acd not pessimistic.
Marriage was not necessary for a wom
an; she need not re simply a button
hole boqm t to some man. If good is in
or.r-, it will come ou Go on and von
will succeed. The boosters, she said,
are niore important than the booster.
In locks Miss Cleveland remiuds
one of Anna Dickinson; perhaps be
cause i he wears her hair in the same
style...-' Yet there is nothing mannish
about her, and in private she is rather
too modest than otherwise. Her voice
is clear and her articulation distinct,
making her a fine speaker. Since that
time she has given frequent lectures at
the college, which have been very pop
ular, w'h the young ladies. Her name
is found in the last catalogue in the
Faculty a3 Lecturer on Mediaeval His
tory. The country may congratulate
itself upon having so intelligent and
public-spirited a Christian woman in
the White House.
' . Th3 Poor Orphaa Girl
No homo, no home, pleads the girl
At the door of the princely balb
As she trembling stoofl on tbo parlor Step
; And leaned rgaiibfc the marble wall.
"My father rla3, whom I never knew,"
As the tears dimmed hercyca so bright,
"My mother sleeps ia a new-made jjnvve, :
'Tis an orphan pleads to-night "-..;-..
Her clothes were tbin and her feet were hare,
" ret the rich man shut his door;"
"Oh give me a home she feebly said,
A bon.e and a bit of bread."
So cold and dark, and the snow fell fast.
Yet the rich man shut his door
And bis pvaud lip curled with scorn, as be
.' said, - -"Ns
home, no bread for the poor,"
"I'll frcezv' sbo said, as she sank on the
-.' . steps " '
And strove to wr.ip her feet '
In her tattered dress, all cavcred witi snow
Yes covered with show and sleet.
The rich man slept on bis velvet couch J-'
And dreamed of bis silver and gold;
Vfcile the little fcirl in her- ltd of snow,
; Muvujured "Oh, so cold, so cold,"
The hours rolled on, arid and the midnight
chime
Rang out like a funeral knell
And the arta seemed wrapped, in a winding
V. sheet, - - . ' : : . - -
And the drifting snow still fell.
The hours passed by, and the littlo girl
.Still lay at the rich man's doo.
But her soul had fled tip home above,
here there's room and bread for the poor
Immigratioa-
From every source comes word that
the imaiigration to Oregon this yetr
will be unprecedented in the history of
the State. This, of course, is the fore,
runner of good times, and should be so
regarded by all. The citizens of Doug
las cdunty. should not be behind in
securing as many of the immigrants as
possible. Douglas county, with its
large territory, fertile lauds, magnifi
cent stock ranges, salubrious climate
and wonderful natural resources should
be the home of thousands. k A little
inore public spirit on the part of our
citizens, a little move desire to share
'with all the world our great good for
tune, a little more energy and push, and
Douglas county will take the lead. Let
each individual think what he can do
for the ' greater development of our
fatoretl section, and then contribute
his mite of work to that cud. Be pre
pared to weleoaia many who may come
the present season, and never lack in
saying a good word for this favored j
chnie, which in soil, resources -and cli- j
mate has received the richest blessings
of Heaven, : ,
