Howling Hoodlums-
The following from the tried and
trusted organ of Democracy, the San
Francisco Examiner, of the 2Gth inst.,
we republish, and lengthy .is it may be
ast cur readers to peruse it.
'The eager unanimity with which the
Republican and monopoly press attack
the Stockton Convention, is sufficient
evidence of the good work; it did and
the respectability of the influences
which controlled it If it had assumed
p. negative position on current politics
if it had been afraid to speak out f or
t' people, the scurvy tools of monop
oly would have had nothing but praise
for it. But it was .not a silent nor ?
negative convention. It went to work
)ike a surgeon and cut the ulcers and
rotten places out of the body of the par
ty.' Ia it surprising, in view of these
tilings, that the organs of monopoly' ap
jly to that condition every vicious
iinil depraved epithet their vile imagin
ations can invent! Is it any wonder
that they are exhausting the vocabulary
of Billingsgate in an effort. 'to vent
their spleen upon that gathering of hon
est and unflinching Democrats at
.Stockton who knew their duty and
jdared to do itl Let these scurvy and
purchased emissaries cf railroad greed
and avarice howl as they will; the peo
ple recognize hs splendid work of the
convention, and honor the courage and
fidelity that dared, in the face of all op
posing influences," to vindicate the
truth and patriotism of the Democratic
party.
The Stockton Convention is called by
the monopoly press a congregation of
hoodlums, and telegrams have been
sent Enst denouncing it and endeavor
ing to create the false impression that
it represented a hoodlum element, and
was composed .of men without standing,
property or character. The fact is, the
contention was in all respects supei ior
to anv State convention that had ever
before convened in California. In that
body theae were nine State senators
And seventeen assemblymen, besides a
large number of ex-senators and ex.
assemblymen. The speaker of the
assembly and the president pro tern, of
the senate were members; there were
men there who had filled the highest
positions in the gift of the State, such
as governor, United States senator and
representative ?n congress;' there were
judges and ex -judges of the State courts;
fanners owning broad acres and large
flocks and herdss, leading merchants and
prominent attorneys, miners and me
chanics, all representative men, thor
oughly in earnest and honest. Tjiey
represented fully the public sentiment
of the communities from "whence they
came, and on almost all questions were
practically unanimoiis.
They elected as delegates such men
as Williim Dunphy and General Thos.
J. Clunie of San Francisco; C. F. Fost
er of Tehama, now btate senator, and
II. M. Larue of Sacramento, speaker of
. the legislative assembly and president
of the State agricultural society; II. C
Wilson, an extensive farmer of Tehama;
Dennis Spencer, a prominent attorney
and Stats senator from Napa; J. r.
Breckenridge, assemblpman and prom
inent attorney cf Merced; Judge Niles
. Senls, an ex-State senator and leader
of the "bar in Ne vada; WYrren B. En
glish, State senator and farmer, and ex
tensively engaged in business in Contra
, Costa; M. F. Tarpey, a prominent wool
merchant of Alameda and San Fran
cisco; John A. Wright, the well known
attorney, who holds a position in the
profession second to none of his age in
the State; Louis F. Iloltz, at present
assessor of San Francisco, who was
elected by an overwhelming majority in
1832; Judge Lawrence Archer, ex
State senator of Santa Clara and au
thor of the famous Archer bill; Morns
Schmitt, a capitalist and well known
business man; L. J. RoFer of Los An
. geles, whose magnificent vineyards and
orange groves are famous all over the
world; A. P. Butler, a very extensive
yiticulturist and one of the largest rai
sin piodueers in the United States.
The alternates are men of equal stand
ing and character. These are the men
' which this so-called hoodlumconrention
in its wild frenzy, selected to repre
sent the Democracy of California in the
national councils of its party.
The foregoing we have published in
vindication of the cause of Democracy
and of the gallant Democrats ,cf our
fair s;steState. Coming from such
a high source ft is a terrible rebuke
to the kid gloved, pomade glued, cologne-stinking,
codfish aristocracy that
' have fastened thair pinafores to the
coat tail of Stephen J. Field. No gocd
Democratic paper, so far, has dene so.
Should Jove grow blind and looee every
native sense, perhaps a thunderbolt
might go estray and strike in the vi
cinity of that nin but, impossible;
lightning ha3 too much sense. Then
the cours of Field's sycophantic, lick
spittle organs has secured a solid Pa
. - . . I
cic coast for Blaine. Thinking peo
ple rarely worship strange Gods, more
especially if the Standard is chief disciple.
Elaine Banners-
Says the Pittsburg Post:. If it is
true, as stated, that the Republicans
propose- to christen their campaign clubs
after some of Mr. Blaine's most famous
exploits, a fine selection is open to
them. Thus we would have of course:
The Northern Pacific Bond, Stock
and Land Grabbers. Banner Blaine
explaining to Fisher how the $25,C00
dollar operation will do for a flyer.
The Mulligan Guards. Banner
Blaine on his knes begging for the
the guilty letters.
The Mulligan Letter Carriers. Ban
ner Blaine making oil" with the letters
obtained by fraud and retained by
force.
The Little Rock and Foit Smith
Battler3. Banner "I shall not prove
a deadhead in that enterprise." J. G.
Blaine.
The Parliamentary Pointers. Ban
ner Blaine bargaining his ru'ings as
Speaker to land grabbing corporations.
Plumed Knight Phalanx. Banner
Blsine's cheap substitute detailed
for a soft and safe place at home; re
verse side, Bluins collecting the bounty
from his country. Music, "As we go
marching through Maine."
The Guano In vincibles. Banner
Bully the weak and Cringe to the
Strong.
The Corporations and Monopoly
Condottieri. Banner "Blaine is a
live man and will make a live Presi
dent.." Jay Gould.
Clubs organized on Blaine's princi
ples and 'christened as indicated, would
not only be an inspiration to his fol
lowers, but biographical of their chief.
Public Opinion.
This admirable journal, publhhed in
San Francisco by J. N. Choynski, an
accomplished, straightforward Jew,
thus wisely speak.
Sol llirsch is a candidate for the
United States Senate, from Oregon.
If Sol. can cither speak or write Eng
lish or German, or make himself under
stood in Yuedish-Teutsch, we will sup
port him. Stick to your Luppenes
Sol., ahd do not ape the ways of Fairj
Taber and other Senators who have
nothing but their money to speak for
them. Jews must have more brains
than money to entitle them even to a
Long Tom vote. The idea of a llirsch
having the cheek to step into the shoes
of a Nesmith or a G rover!
At an othT place it thus " refers to
the soul-bought, hide bound, monopo
lized, pretended representative in the
United States Senate.
U. S. Senator Dolph shuold be
ashamed of himself to allow his name
to appear as trustee of dozens of rail
road rascalities. It looks bad, to bay
the least. ! Tlio world know, to bo
sure, that Dolph was Hippel-Mitchell's
and Villard-Mitchell's body servant.
These men were ashamed of their
names and changed them. Dolph
should do the same, or have decency
enough not to pose in the United
Statas Senate while acting as president
and trustee of theiving corporations.
We acjree witn Choynski, and as al
ways heretofore with all good, sensible,
patriotic Jews.
Political Points.
4.
Ex-Governor Chamberlain, of South
Carolina, bolts the Republican platform
and ticket.
It was Hon. Carl Schurz who wrote
of Hon. J. G. Blaine that he "wallowed
in spoils like a rhinoceros in an African
pool.
The Stilwart N. Y. Commercial
says: "Clearly, in a campaign ia which
no paper in Boston and but one in New
York gires Blaine a cordial support,
there is much hard work to be done.
The National Democratic platform
of 1876 referred to "a late Speaker of
the House of Representatives market
ing hi3 rulings as a presiding officer.''
The Speaker thus referred to was James
G. Blaine.
The New York Irish American says.
The "Plumed Knight" has now reached
the summit; of his ambition on hang
man's day, and according to the popular
superstition, a ticket nominated on
hangman's day is a ticket of ill omen.
Colonel Cbarles R. Cod man, a Mass
achusetts Republican of influence and
standing, has bolted Blaine. He has
left the Republican party. Colonel
Codman was Chairman of the Massa
chusetts Republican State Convention
last year.
It is said that Tom Piatt, Powell
Clayton and Elkins, two of them star
routers, expect to go into Blaine's Cab
inet, should he be elected. He won't
be elected, but what a feast for corrupt
political rascals of the country it they
could only I g t "Jim" in the White
House. I
Rev. Dr. A. S. Patton gives notice in
the Baptist Weekly that his paper can
not commend James G. Blaine to its
readers as a suitable eantlttfate for the
Presidency. "A man who aspires to
the Presidential chair should be above
the charges which dishonor the official
life of Blaine.
When we read in the Chicago Re
publican platform, says the St. Louis
Republican, about the public lauds be
ing a heritage of the people" to , be
"reserved as far as possible, for small
holdings by actual settlers," etc, mem
ory takes us back to the time when
James G. Blaine, during his session in
Congress, proposed the loan by which
the Government lost one hundred mill
ions of dollars on account of the Pacific
loads.
The Republican platform makes up
in length what it lacks in breadth.

so simplified that seven parts do the

with the chain, making it lighter and
more durable. The main drive wheel
is made of the bst hickory, with heavy
wrought-iron tire, weldnd and shrunk
