limited acreage shall be sold to any one
person. If it is true as staled that the

-4,000,000 acres to the syndicate of
which Hen Owens is ihe head, it is in
-.violation of tho statute. The people
.Hhouldsee to it that their legislators
-.a-e men who have the stamina and
ability to unearth these frauds, regard
less of who it may hurt. It is an ad
mitted fact that it is for the best inter-.
ests of the State that these lands
.Riiould bo owned and held by actual
; settlers, instead of being held in large
.bodies for the purposes of speculation
We are of those who believe that the
earth was madu for our habitation and
that any system of government which
attempts te parcel out to individuals or
corporations vast tracts of the public
domain for the purpose of speculation,

to the State, beyond legislative control
It is a well established principle, both

vitiate all contracts and if these swamp
land grabbers have been guily of the

ties by their filings, and 'the State offi--tials
can give no greater rights than the

islative interference and should be
probed to the bottom.

Pacific railroad company, in the conclu
sion of bis speech to the citizens of
Corvallis, charges M. C. Gorge with

The Moreison Bill. The caucus
of the Democratic members of congress,
hold at Washington on the 25th mst.,
resolved to pass the Morrison tariff bill.
Th resolution as passed by the caucus
is as follows: "Resolved, that the bill
generally known as the Morrison bill,
shall be taken up for consideration at
the earliest practical and reasonable
Lime, for debate and after such debate
that a bill be pasd for the reduction
of duties and tbe war tariff tax." The
resolution -was adopted, 110 to 57.
This is a firm declaration of the Demo
cratic position on the tariff question.
Nothing but j Republican filibustering
or executive interference, can. prevent
the reduction! of taxes and giadual de
cline in prices on the necessaries of life.
A very important dispatch from
Wheeling, West Virginia, informs us
that the identical "scaffold upon which
John Brown was hung has been dis
covered. A fragment of this precious
relic should be sent to Hon. Lisker
Ochiltree, from the howling wilds of
Texas, and by him introduced into con
gress as a reaolation of condolence and
and then adopted by a unanimous one
vote. Thereafter the same, being nicely
engrossed, should be sent to Queen
Victoria and there would be war, sure.

A dispatch says that in tho event of
the passage of the woman suffrage
amendment in this State, Mrs. Abigail
Scott Duniway will be a candidate for
governor. The dispatch neglect te
