THE INDEPENDENT.
SATURDAY, JANUARY
5,
188-1.
Presidential Talk.
Since tha time and place for holding
the national Republican convention has
-.leeir definitely located, a number of the
leading bosses are out in open letters
intended to shape the campaign and the
strap time present thoir personal claims
for the party nomination. Old Simon
Cameron is out in his quadrennial letter,
which is brought to the light of day by
m ostensible interview "with a corres
pondent of the Philadelphia Press,
which is the personal organ of the sly
old fox. Tbe letter is lengthy and in
many respects shows the wanderings of
an old man in his dotage, who is anx
ious to press his personal claims for
recognition upon his party, and at the
flame titno keep his real object in the
background, by appearing disinterested
as to whom their standard-bearer shall
be. Tlu letter can be riewed in no
ether light by the practical observer
. tkan a direct bid for presidential noini
natioiu The eld man forcibly repre
sents how he has during the sixty yeai-s
-ef bis public Iifo, by master strokes of
policy and jioHtical chicanery, controlled
national conventions and secured the
nomination fcr his favorite candidate
When the ostensible reporter asks,
"Who will be the candidate!" the old
- man shrewdly say3 that "you will have
to ask some one else. I am not in poli
tics now, though I keep a pretty close
jyeon the current events, lue pos
session and use of political power is ex
ceedingly fascinating and I like to study
the ebb and, flow of the tide as well as
ever. One thing I will say; the Re
publican candidate next year must be a
strong, positive man; one who carries
the confidence of the country and can
lje relied upon for a rigorous yet con
ftervative policy, if elected. There are
heveral .such men " in the party and I
Lave implicit reliance in the wisdom of
a Bepublican convention to name such
none; some man capable of dealing
with the highest duties of the crisis
which we are rapidly approaching.
shall never take part in a presidential
caavavs again, and mast decline to name
q of the men whom I think would be
aeoap table candidates." The letter dis
oasses Ijhe tariff question throughout.
And selfishly contends for free importa
tion of raw material and high tariff on
manufactured articles, which is tl
key note of the Republican policy upon
that question.
President Arthur in
his message to
Concress trivd to straddle the t irifl
qnestion, the silver coinage question
the payment of the national debt, the
retirement of the national banks, th
internal reveuue ana all otner ques
tions of national importance. He is
now holding high court at Washington
&d other places throughout the coun
try, at which the splendor of Rome in
tho davs of the Caesars, sinks into in
significance. He mav be considered a
well groomed and full-fledged candidate.
and with the public patronage at his
disposal would bo formidable, was it not
that the ghost of the murdered Gar
field will not down at his bidding.
Blaine is out in an open bid for the
presidency, in which he is trying to
play the rule of the great decliner. In
Lis letter he claims to have struck the
happy medium and suggests a way of
disposing of the surplus revenue with
out reducing the price of manufactued
articles, (assuming that it is for the
Wst interest of the people to pay the
highest' price for Vhat they consume.)
To do this he proposes to take the rev
enue collected on whisky and tobacco
and distribute it equally among the
States. This proposition for childlike
riuplicity surpasses any thing of the
kind ever suggested, and Congress will
no doubt vote him a medal and i the
department issue him a patent on the
invention, When his plan is fully ven
tilated he will be practically out of tho
fight
The present indications are that John
A. Logan of Illinois, a western man
(supposed to be identified with the agri
cultural interests of the great North
West who are tired of paying tribute
to the J3"ew England manufacturer,
bids fair to be the dark horse on a mo
lasses platform, which can e read to
mean any thing or nothing on the great
issues, so worded as to be susceptible
of catching votes.
Protection doesnt seem to be ex
actly what it is clai&xed for the work
ing man. Last winter the tariff on
WO&J was cut down at the earrest so-
' neitation of the woolen manafacturei-s
cf Nevj England, they claiming that
tiinl ess they got cheaper raw material
theii employees would be compelled to
work for lower wages. This reduction
wad made And yet for savaral days
the telegraph has been bringing the in-
- formation that (beso mills were shut
ting down because the employees would
. ji-t accept 4 reduction in wages.

A late numb.T of the Hesperian con
tains, under the head of "Relics of tho
Indian War," the f jllowing:
Vhen Mr. T. J. Matlock was in
southern Oregon, says'the Vindicator,
a few weeks ago, he inade a trip to the
ruins of old Fort Lane m quest of rel
ics. In an old log that once formed a
part of the fort ho saw some bullet
lioles and with ori axe took out a chip
wnicii contains two; tney . were snot
into it by the Indians in an attack' in
852. In looking among the dwbris hu
ound a piece of grani e from the corner
if the foundation, " which he will have
jolished and cut into a paper, weight.
An old, rusty hoiTieshoo is another rel-
c of those days, and this he will hang
over his office door.. ThesH old souv !
neivs of the Indian wars are interesting
to look at and will in time be qnice val
uable."
This articlo is entirely correct, ' with
these exceptions: First, Fort Lane
was not in existence in 1852. Second,
Fort Lane was never attacked by Indi
ans, and third, Fort Lane never was n
ort. It was a .two-company cavalry
ost, bnilt by Captain (now General)
A.J. Smith, in the fall and winter of
1S53-4. It consisted of a row of log
cabins on three sides of the parade
ground. On one side were the officers
quarters, the other those of tbe soldiers,
while tue third contained hospital,
guard house, etc. The post was situa
ted on a gentle elevation, near the
junction of Bear creek and Rogue river
and wa3 so placed that the troops could
watch the '.reservation, on the north
side of the river. When the reserva
tion was abandoned and -the Indians
removed to northern Oregon, the post
was abandoned also. No fight ever oc
curred near the post after it was estab
lished. Besides Gen. A. J. Smith.
many officers who have since distin-
guisaea tnemsolves nave been quar
tered at the old post. Among the most
distinguished were Dr. Charles II
Urane,
late Surgeon General U. S. A.
Gen. Hood of the. C. S. A., Gen. II. O.
Gibson U. S. A., Gen. Sweitzer, U. S,
A., and Gen. Hazen TJ. S. A. signal
service. If such lelics as the above
are to bo incorporated into the history
of southern Oregon it may read well as
a romance, but will have little value as
authority.
Seneca Smith has been appointed
by Governor Moody judgo of the Cir
cuit court, to till the vacancy caused by
the resignation of Judge Stott. The
appointment is satisfactory to a major
ity of the Portland bar. There are
some, however, who wanted tho place
that feel that Governor-Moody might
have made an abler selection. The ap
pointment holds good until the June
election, when those parties can have a
chance to air their ambition.
