Portland Daily?Standard.3
No Democrat will for an instant
hesitate to take the Republican party
on the merits of its record. If the Re
publican party will spread before the
public a truthful statement of its past
history, Democrats in order to carry
the next olectien, would only have
to make their nominations, and, at that
point, end the campaign work.
According to the recent Republican
party platforms, it is averred that the
record of that party in the past affords
the best guarantee of the party's pur
pose and acts in the future. If that
is true, and the people of this country
would judge the' Republican party by
that past as an earnest of the future,
and elect or rejVct upon the merit of
tha whole, the Democratic party would
have little or nothing to do in the cam
paign, except to appropriately accept
the administration. The record of the
Republican party must convince the
honest people of this country that there
is neither honor or safety left in that
party. It is not an exageratiort to say
that from the spring of 1861 to the
beginning of March 1862, there was
more rascality, more robbery of every
sort, and by members of $he Republi
can party in power, than there had been
in the previous 50 years. When the
war closed, the aggregate of stealings
had become simply incalculable. Who
may tell of tho millions squandered by
jlqbeson in making a poor navy the
poorer; how much by infamous Belk
pap and Lis Republican associatesl
When the outraged people at last de.
inanded an investigation, a Republican
Congress rtfused to do it, as long as re
fusal wag possible; in fact whitewashed
the gang of political thieves, every one
ftf them. The Republican party so far
from being shocked into decency by the
