SEE WHAT! WHY, THAT THE LEADING MERCHANT
leges and immunities, and the fact that
the freight and. rates were more than
ideuble far the same distance that they
were in our neighboring State on the
south, and more than four times higher
than in the middle and eastern States,
-the company have seen fit te double
the rates by charging double distance
n car loads of freight over a portion of
its read, and have finally settled on an
advance of one third of the original
rate. It is by escaping taxation and
.charging exorbitant rates that these
corporations and the persons who own
And control them in so short a time
grow so immensely rich.
The farmer and mechanic who by
thrift and industry have accumulated a
few hundred dollars, are prohibited by
law from charging above a certain rate
of interest tor its use. And no one
questions the right or ' expediency of
the Staie imposing such restrictions up
n the indivual. The same right is in.
herent in the people to regulate and
control these corporate monopolies
And it is the fault of the people them
selves if they submit longer to the im.
position and robbery which is practiced
upon them by these corporations.
While the legislature should at all
times protect, these institutions, and
act fairly and justly toward corpora
tions of its ewn creation, it nevertheless
ow a duty to the people, that they
should be protected from exorbitant
' charges. The individual is compelled
whether willing or unwilling to give up

METROPOLITAN H0T1,
