Death of Archbishop Blanches
At six 'cleck on last Monday even

Blanchet D. D. Archbishop of Oregon,
died m St Vincents hospital, aged 88
years. His death was not unexpected,
as he had received the last sacrament
at the hands of his co adjutor .Arch
bishop Seghers about two months ago
Decased was born at St. Pierre, Eiyiere-du-Sud,"
Quebec, Canada, September 5,
1755; was educated in the Petit Seni
naire, Quebec, and was ordained July
18, 1819, by Archbishop Plessis. In
April, 1838, he was sent in company
with the Rev. Modesto Demers by the
Archbishop of Quebec io the Pacific
coast to organizs a mission situated be
tween the Pacific coast and the Rocky
mountains, and arrived at their mission
headquarters, Fert Vancouvf r, Nov. 24,
1838, after enduring all the hardships
incident to travel across the wild and
rugged plains and meuntains, traveling
by horse, canoe, and sometimes on foot,
with the hardy trappers who, alone
with the Indians, occupied the country
that now comprises one State and three
Territories. These two priests labcrel
for three years without assistance, and
organized churches, and baptized In
dians and Canadians by the hundreds.
On October 17, 1843, Rev. Father
Blanchet, who held the office of vicar-
general, was instrumental in estab
lishing St. Joseph's college at St. Paul,
Marion county, this State, and a
from Rome. In December, 1843, Or
egon was erected inte a Vicarat-Apos
tolic and Rev. Father Blanchet Avas ap
pointed Vicar-Apostolic, and on No
vember, 1844, he set out for Quebec to
i-eceive nis consecration, ana irom
there he went to Rome, and on his
representation, his vicarate was divided

Mr. Baker. They had been bad friends
for some time.

A Visit to the Medical Springs.
We, for the first time, in company
with O. W. Jones the proprietor, vis-
ited the Eldorado Spring this wek.
The location is some three miles due
west of Roseburg, in the Umpqua riv-
er. In consequence of the ; tedious
windings of the road we were com-
pelled to iravel. some four joailes te get
to the spring, which we found to be lo-
cated amid nature's fairest and most
picturesque surroundings. ' The hills
on the left rise to almost mountain
hight, covered with lofty., trees, while
near the spring is a strip ef level hot-
tom land, covered with a dense growth
of fir, maple and myrtle, interwoven
with a thick growth of underbrush,
To the westward stretcaes a mile or
more of smooth and placid water.
The medical spring itself is in the
bed of the river and wells up from a
fissure in the solid rock, and al the
present low stage the river is a foot or
more deep over the spring. Tho wa-
ter is obtained by an "iron pipe or
pumpstoclc, which is riveted to the bed-
ro.-k, over the fissure, the other end
fastened to a tree upon the bank, and
a common, suction pump used to draw
the water. The lrA - is - as clear as
crystal and cold : as ice water, when fii-st
drawn from Ike fountain. 1 : v
As to its medical properties there
are many testimonials. It would be
impossible to describe its taste, and
when first drank it is Very repugnant,
but by frequent draughts it becomes
more pleasant. In order to try its ef-
feet we drank a quart or more of the
water during the day and can say that
about the only effect it has had upon us
we since have been somewhat drowsy
and favored with an insatiable appetite,
to the dismay of the waiters and utter J
consternation of our landlord, who will
no longer sell tha water to his regular
boarders. ' -- ''

The receipts of the institution during
the year, including the sum of 3,243
14 on hand on July 1, 1882, were $15,-

But on July 1st a quarter's' salary will
be due the faculty, amounting in the
aggregate to about $3000. To meet

which will leave a deficit of about 8600
when the next term begins in Septem-
ber. But on Friday last there was re
ceived from Mr. Villard for the uni-
versity ten of the first general mortgage

Hans Weaver's ranch near Myrtle Creek in
this county, and when approached ruu his

volver and informed him for what they ar
rested him. They brought hinto Roseburg
and placed hun in the jail for safe keeping
daring the night. . -
Mr. Hogan started with the prisoner en
the early train this morning to take him to
Marion eounty. They will get the reward
that has been offered for bis capture.

away for dear life. Mr. Herman An-
lauf is packing up his household goods
preparatory for the Dalles, and Robert
is swinging the ox-whip and it is ssid
by an eye witness that he really uses
good English when his wagon over-
turns. ' .
Tho public school here will close in
two weeks. The teacher is well quali-
fied for the position, as we hear her
spoken of in the highest terms, both by
patrons and pupils. Miss Douglas of
Lane county, who has been teaching in
the Ritchey district, closes her school
on Thursday. Mr. G. V. Boggs closed
his school on Elk creek last Friday. We
think we have been very fortunate in
securing such able teachers in this end
of the county.
A very pleasant party was gotten up
here on last Saturday evening, in hon-
or of the Miss Stoflers of Cottage
Grove, who remained in our village un-
til Monday morning.
Our merchants report that they are
entirely out of matches and don't pro-
pose to stock up until after the first, as
the duty will then bo removed. We
know of several parties who propose to
make matches and are mere than will-
ing to pay their duty,
